Filipino Women in Art: Magsaysay-Ho

Three Women in a Landscape by ANITA MAGSAYSAY-HO Magsaysay-Ho found inspiration from important women in her life and depicted Filipina women, which she was most familiar with, in her paintings. This painting shows three sturdy Filipina village peasants harvesting fruit, representing the strong and communal nature of women in Filipino society. It was executed using Magsaysay-Ho's signature technique of egg tempera on canvas, which is a difficult medium to control but allows for bold, decisive lines and simplified forms. The painting acknowledges the role of Filipino women as strong, solid farmers in village communities.

FILIPINO ARTWORK

Three Women in a Landscape by ANITA MAGSAYSAY-HO

SOURCE OF SUBJECT; Magsaysay-Ho found inspiration from her childhood and important
women in her life. Although she traveled all her life and encountered many different women
from different cultures, all of the women in her paintings are of Filipinas because they are what
she is most familiar with.

FACTUAL MEANING; It reveals a district preference for depicting her beloved

compatriots, The Filipino women who are portrayed variously in scenes of
harvesting fruit, c a t c h i n g f i s h , o r i n t e r a c t i n g w i t h i n t h e m a r k e t p l a c e . R a t h e r

onventional Meaning: This painting is painted as oil on wood. It is a visual representation of the
idea of
happiness suggested by the word "gioconda" in Italian. The careful rendering of folded fabric
demonstrate Leonardo’s studied observations and inexhaustible patience.
Subjective Meaning: In my opinion, I think the painting shows that Mona Lisa wanted to
physically show
to people that she is happy but deep inside, she was bearing something so big that she couldn’t
bear and
tell anyone that why we can see in the painting that she is smiling but her smile speaks so many
things

CONVENTIONAL MEANING: Three Women in a Landscape (Lot 187) is a rare and

relatively early work, executed in Magsaysay-Ho's signature egg tempera on canvas. The artistic
use of egg tempera is more difficult than oil paint, as the consistency makes this medium harder
to control. Magsaysay-Ho reinforces this through the use of bold, decisive lines and
simplification of forms: triangular kerchiefs tied around angular faces, swiftly formed arms and
legs, yet all with a strong gestural quality despite their abbreviated renditions. The careful
rendering of folded fabric demonstrates Leonardo’s studied observations and inexhaustible
patience.

SUBJECTIVE MEANING: In my opinion, I think the painting shows that three women wanted
to acknowledgement of Filipino women concept in which women are also strongly and solidly
built farmers village. It depicts three women harvesting fruit, a show of solidarity within the
communal nature of Filipino society particularly amongst the women
