Knowing your body composition can help you assess your health and fitness level. Often,
you will measure your body composition at the start of a weight-loss or fitness program
and then check it periodically to monitor your progress.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of a person’s weight over his or her height. It
is more of an indicator than a direct measurement of a person’s total body fat.
Physical Fitness Test is a set of measures designed to determine a student’s level of
physical fitness. It is intended to test two categories of physical fitness commonly
referred to as “health-related” and “skill- related. Health-related components refer to
those physical attributes which enable a person to cope with the requirements of daily
living such as cardio-vascular endurance or stamina, muscular strength, and
endurance, flexibility, and the appropriate body mass index (BMI). Skill-related
components are physical abilities that show potential for good performance in certain
skills (usually in sports) like running speed, agility, reaction time or quickness, balance,
and coordination.
Health-Related Fitness components focus on factors that promote optimum health and
prevent the onset of disease and problems associated with inactivity.
BODY COMPOSITION – is the body’s relative amount of fat to fat-free mass.
Body Mass Index (BMI) - Is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of
height in meters.
Weight – the heaviness or lightness of a person.
Height – the distance between the feet on the floor to the top of the head in standing
position.
FORMULA FOR COMPUTING BODY MASS INDEX
WEIGHT [in Kilograms]
HEIGHT [in Meters]2
Example: 30 = 30 = 20.83 (NORMAL)
(1.20) 2 1.44
CLASSIFICATION
BELOW 18.5 UNDERWEIGHT
18.5 – 24.9 NORMAL
25 – 29.9 OVERWEIGHT
30.0 – ABOVE OBESE
What I Can Do
Activity 1. Compute your Body Mass Index and identify the classification. Follow the
proper procedures on how to get your height and weight. Write your answer in your
physical fitness test card located on the last page of this module.
▪ Weight
Equipment:
Weighing or Bathroom Scale calibrated properly
Procedure:
For you as the test taker:
a. Wear light clothing before weighing.
b. On bare feet, stand erect and still with weight evenly distributed on the center
of the scale.
For your partner:
a. Before the start of weighing, adjust the scale to zero point.
b. Record the score in kilograms.
Scoring – record body mass to the nearest 0.5 kilograms.
▪ Height
Equipment:
1. An even and firm floor and flat wall
2. L – square
3. Tape measure laid flat to a concrete wall. The zero point
starts at the bottom of the floor
Procedure:
For you:
a. Stand erect on bare feet with heels, buttocks and shoulders pressed against
the wall with tape measure.
For your partner:
a. Place the L-square against the wall with the base at the top of the head of the
person being tested. Make sure that the L-square when placed on the head of
the student, is straight and parallel to the floor.
b. Record the score in meters.
Scoring – record standing height.
* **1 meter = 100 centimeters
Activity 2. List down at least five (5) members of your family. Compute their body mass
index and identify the classification. Write your answer in the table.
