Lesson Idea Name: Pollution and Human Affect on the Environment
Grade Level/Content Area: Third Grade Life Science
Georgia Content Standard(s) or GELDS Addressed: S3L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information about the effects of pollution (air, land, and water) and humans on the environment.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson: By the end
ISTE Student Standard of this lesson, I would like my students to be able
(Empowered Learner) to identify and discuss with peers the different
types of pollutions, the affects of pollution, and
1D: how humans can help.
Students use technology to seek
feedback that informs and improves
their practice and demonstrate their
learning in a variety of ways.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The student learning goal for this lesson is to
learn the types of pollution and affects of humans on earth.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Padlet
Description of Software: Padlet is a technology software that allows students to create and
collaborate with one another in real time.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
✘ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the teacher's
direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly practice based.
✘ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of learning
and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates the learning as
the students direct their own learning processes.
Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing authentic/real-world
projects to demonstrate their learning and publish results outside of the classroom. (Note: This
objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project
to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.)
How will you connect this topic to students’ prior knowledge as you teach? Before we do this
specific lesson, we will be learning about the environment and certain things like climate change,
affect of animals on the environment, and the effect of weather on the environment. This lesson will
move onto the impact of humans on the environment. We can have a quick discussion on some of
the ways that animals, weather, and climate have on the environment.
Managing the technology: Students guide their own learning by completing the activities in their
own time, and going outside in groups, if possible, to meet the pace of everyone.
Lesson idea implementation: To begin the lesson, we will have a discussion about how weather,
animals, plants, etc. affect the environment. Then we will all grab our devices and open up Padlet.
Together as a class, we will look at the beginning of the assignment, which is a picture of ‘sad Earth’.
We will discuss and describe the different ways that Earth is sad. This will then introduce our topic of
pollution and the human impact on the environment. This is now what students will lead themselves
in their learning. They will watch each of the BrainPOP’s given, and in the second activity, they will
then answer the question given. Then, in groups of students who are ready, we will go outside, and
they will observe ways that the environment is being affected by pollution or humans. They will
describe their observations where given. Then they will take the quizziz to test their knowledge of
what they know from the videos and observations. Then we will close out the lesson by having
students describe one way that they/ humans can help the Earth.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
The lesson and technology enhance students learning because they get to facilitate their own
learning by going their own pace, and they also get to interact and collaborate with each other in the
Padlet. The video aspect of this gets students excited and keeps them engaged instead of reading
from a textbook or listening to the teach talking. All students are able to participate because there
are many different ways to respond to the activities given. They can draw, speak, write, etc. their
responses. They can also view the BrainPOP videos in different languages, read the transcript, and
they can pause and play as needed.

I think this lesson will impact student learning because they will be excited to get to watch the
BrainPOP videos and get to share their learning with their peers and me. Instead of getting a boring
lesson and only having an assessment on it, they get to choose how they present their learning in
the aspects of the Padlet. I look forward to implementing the student led/ own paced learning of
this. This way there isn’t the pressure of moving on too fast or too slow for specific students. This is
also a lesson that they can take with them beyond just school. It helps them know how to help and
affect the environment in a positive way.
