Chapter II
The Basic wardrobe
Personality development helps in
the overall development of an
individual. An individual’s style of
dressing plays an important role in
enhancing his/her personality. It is
rightly said that “a man is known
by his dress and address”. An
individual’s dressing sense
speaks volumes of his character
and personality.
You really need to know what you
are wearing. Do not wear
something just because everyone
else is wearing the same. Find out whether the dress would look good on you or not? One needs to be
extremely careful of his/her body type, built, weight, complexion and even family background, nature of
work, climate while selecting clothes.
Dress according to the occasion. One needs to look good for an impressive personality. Clothes reflect
who you are, how you feel at the moment and sometimes even what you want to achieve in life?
Always remember whatever you wear should reflect the real you. Your dressing sense reflects your
personality, character, mood, style and what actually you are as an individual. People wearing gaudy
clothes with loud makeup are generally extroverts and love partying. You really can make out what sort of
person an individual is by his/her dressing. Dull colours indicate that an individual is sad or upset whereas
bright colours not only reflect your happy state of mind but also make the other person happy.
Fashion Finesse
● Clothing is for protection, comfort, modesty, and enhance of beauty .
● Appropriateness above all is the best rule, dress within the bounds of classic good taste
● appropriateness is determined by a number of factors and can change dramatically from situation
to situation
● fashion is serious. What you wear reveals a significant message about you and your world.
Rules for men and womens wear
There are enough rules in life as it is. Some, however, are there to help. Like the rules that
govern how to dress well.
Of course, every man or woman that has an opinion on such things speaks from personal
experience – and no doubt what works for one doesn’t always work for another; or what works
for one is considered too pedestrian or too avant-garde by another. So, when it comes to
dressing, they always have to be taken at face value. They’re solid suggestions rather than the
last word on style.
But good advice is never to be sniffed at, and, as menswear becomes ever more rich and
varied, ever more experimental and abundant, ever more trend-aware, in moments of confusion
and self-doubt, it can help to have a valuable fall-back position that cuts through the clutter.
These ‘rules’ tend to be founded in history – they’ve worked for generations, so might well be
assumed to work well today too. And they tend to be founded in the obvious, so obvious they’re
often overlooked: a preference for good fit, high quality, versatility, good value, lack of extremes
and keeping it sober.
There are certainly many other rules out there than are presented here. Some of these you may
have already discovered for yourself. That, after all, is part of the pleasure of clothing, which no
rule should hamper: trying a new kit out, seeing if it suits you, seeing how it makes you feel. But,
these rules have stood the test of time and, when used in conjunction, act as a failsafe guide on
how to dress well today.
14 Dressing Rules That Everyone Should Learn Once and for All
1. The middle button on a jacket should always be closed. The
upper one depends on your mood. The lower one should never
be closed.
2. When you are wearing a shirt or a blouse, you
can unbutton no more than 2 buttons.
3. Wear earrings that match your bracelet and a necklace that goes
well with your ring. 3 or 4 things in one look is too much.
4. The tip of your tie should reach your waist and cross it just a little.
5. Opt for either a miniskirt or cleavage. Both at once look too
vulgar.
6. If you are wearing a shirt without a jacket, you don't need a tie.
7. Your office shirt cleavage should not be deeper than 4"
from your collarbone.
8. If you tucked in your shirt, you should wear a belt.
9. Your naked skin should not be seen between your
cardigan and your jeans. Wear a top if necessary.
10. Your belt should be the same color as your shoes.
11. All visible tags on clothes should be cut
off.
12. Don't wear too many prints. You can wear 2
different prints of the same color or 2 coordinating
prints of different sizes.
13. Your socks should be long enough that
your naked legs aren't seen when you are
sitting.
14. An office blouse without sleeves should cover your shoulders. "Spaghetti" straps are not
okay in formal situations.
