Don’t Quit Dreaming!


The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) has a strong history of providing academic enrichment
programs designed to foster the entry of underrepresented minority and disadvantaged students into medical careers. Our
track record of successful pipeline programs has enhanced our efforts to increase the applicant pool for these learners.
Our new Reapplicant Enrichment Program (REP) can help provide you with resources and support as you work to
improve your application. The REP is a yearlong virtual medical preparation pipeline program designed to support African
American men, underrepresented minorities in medicine, low-income, first-generation college students, and educationally
disadvantaged reapplicants. The program includes an MCAT preparation course, mentorship, application support,
and interview skills support.

Program Overview

Phase 1: MCAT Preparation & Learning Skills (September – December)

• Attend a virtual 16-week MCAT preparation course taught by distinguished lecturers and tutors from
Elite Medical Prep. The course includes 12 hours of group instruction and 16 hours of individual tutoring
focusing on acquiring, retaining, and applying basic science concepts.

• Course resources are provided (a UWorld MCAT subscription, five full-length AAMC practice exams,
and official AAMC online practice content).

• Meet with a JSSOM Learning Specialist.

• Attend workshops on learning strategies, time management, and wellness.

Phase 2: Mentorship and Application Support (January – June)

• Finalize primary application and begin prewriting supplement/secondary essays. (JSSOM supplemental
application fee will be waived for REP Scholars.)

• Attend personal statement seminars and application workshops.

• Receive individual mentoring from medical students and medical school faculty to revise and improve
application materials.

Phase 3: Candidate Consideration & Interviewing Skills (June – August)

• REP scholars will attend interview workshops and mock interviews to receive individualized feedback on
interviewing and communication skills.

Program Cost

The program will be FREE for accepted scholars. REP is fully funded by the Department of Health and Human Services,
HRSA, UTMB Center of Excellence for Professional Advancement and Research 1 D34HP49234 -01-00.

Scholar Eligibility

¨ Previously
unsuccessful in gaining admission to a US medical school in the last three admissions cycles
(2021-2023).

¨ US Citizen or Permanent Resident

¨ Bean African American male, Underrepresented in Medicine (African American, American Indian, Hispanic,
Hawaiian/Pacific Islander), First-Generation College Student, or educationally and/or economically
disadvantaged background based on TMDSAS or AMCAS application and U.S. Department of Health & Human
Service (HRSA) definitions.

¨ Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited US college or university

¨ Minimum cumulative undergraduate BCPM GPA of 3.0

¨ MCAT must have a minimum combined score of 495.

Application Requirements and Timeline

¨ Verified TMDSAS or AMCAS application(s) from all previous applications submitted.

¨ One-page
letter of recommendation from a science faculty member or PI discussing academic strengths and
weaknesses. Committee letter and a letter from a recent admissions cycle fulfill requirements.

¨ Scholars are responsible for having a reliable internet connection and computer/laptop.

Application Timeline

August 1 Complete REP application due

August 11-12 Interview

August 18 Notification of Selection

August 25 Scholar Commitment due

September 11 Program Starts
