‘bas been quenched and polished.
Besides, itis so constructed to enable taking off of the entre power also from its frontal pat.
‘The main bearing housing has been firmly fixed to the cylinder block with two mounting bolts and two side
clamping bolts so thatthe rigidity ofthe main bearing area is further enhanced.
‘Both the main bearings and crank-pin bearing adopt keimet three-layer metals having a fine strength to with-
stand surface pressure. Main bearings can be easly disassembled and reassembled with use of an exclusive
double-acting jack for lifting.
3, Piston
‘The piston adopts a monoblock type made of ductile cast iron, Piston rings consist of three (chrome-plated)
‘compression rings including a gas tight ring and one (col expander type) cil ring to optimize oil control on
tho piston sliding surface,

ture having a sufficient rigidity against an increase in
thermal load and mechanical load attended with high
‘utpatting and lowering of fucl consumption,
‘The combustion face isa structure having special drilled
hholes among suction and exhaust valves to collect
cooling water at the center in order to increase the
‘cooling effect and thas to reduce the thermal stress.
Cylinder head bolts are four in number and so construc-
ted to make disassembly and reassembly of « cylinder
‘head easy.
‘The suction and exhaust valves are arranged in tandem,
and both the suction and exhaust ports are provided om
the non-maneuvering side,
7. Suction & exhanst valves
Suction and exhaust valves are of the 4-valve bridge type
‘nd equipped with valve rotator.

valve) is ewuipped at the delivery valve area to
Improve the injection characteristic by optimizing
ofthe fuel injection system.
‘The fuel injection valve mounting hole is of the
sleeve type to facilitate cooling.
2001. 1.19
In the case of saveten engine.
‘The type using the high viscosity fuel oil is cooled
with the cooling water running through the fucl
injection sleeve mounted on the cylindor head. A
hheat transfer bush (copper) is installed between
the fvel injection nozzle and the injection valve
sleeve, thus indieetly cooling the injection nozzle.
‘The engine using the MLD. oil does not use the
Indirect-cooling system nor a heat transfer bush.

(0) Cleaning of turbocharger blower with detergent
In the case of a marine main engine, be sure ta clean
the turbocharger blower by uso of detergent once in
sboutthres days because it is undesirable thatthe life
of fuel injection valves is shortened by a rise of the
exhaust temperature as the blower is fouled.
In the case of a marine auxiliary engine, wash the
blower about every week. Inthe case ofa landfindss-
trial service engine, itisallrightto regard tha the said
petiod of blower washing for a marine ausiliary en-
sine is also applicable to this case.
Uf the aforementioned period of blower cleaning is
delayed, the effect of such a cleaning lessens.)

$1, Fuel Oil
‘Use of diesel fuel (JIS K-2205 Class 1 diesel oil) equivalent is standard for fuel oil of this engine.
However, use of blended fuel (blended oil of diesel fuel and low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oil) is pos-
sible by partial alteration of engine specification and installing of incidental equipment. Besides,
straight burning of a low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oil is also possible in such as a marine auxiliary
engine, for instance.
Because properties of fuel oil are very indiffnite and broadly ranged, criteria for selecting the
respective fuel oils are set forth below.
Remarks: Kinds of fuel oils are hereinatter called as follows:

1) Because among properties of low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oil, sulfur content, residual
‘carbon content, ash content, vanadium, sodium, etc. in particular are closely related to
durability of materials used, to constitute the combustion chamber and its neighborhood
of an engine, representative properties recommended of low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oils
are set forth in Table S-2,

Residual oll of a catalytic cracking refining device Is sometimes used for
Industrial low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oil. There remain fine particles of silica and
‘alumina that are catalysts for this device in this residual oll,
A low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oll which uses these/tases will cause abnormal
‘wear of piston ring, cylinder liner, fuel injection pump, fuel injection valve, etc.
Therefore, use a low-cost, high-viscosity fuel oll treated content less than 0.03
Mass% of the ash, minimum of the silicon and aluminum, and removed ail particles
which exceed 3~5 in size utilizing the F.O. treating apparatus.
Incidentally, the moisture content should be kept at less than 0.2 vol.%.
2) “Use HFO with the CCAL, (an ignitabilty index), below 850 as an standard. (However, please note thatthe
said value was estimated from the past operation data and that the value can vary depending on the future
fuel oil quality.) The use of HFO with CAI exceeding 850 will cause faulty combustion and aggravate
‘exhaust color, If such use is inevitable, rise the intake air temperature. This will improve combustion to an
‘emtent, However, raise the intake air temperature carefully in relation with the exhaust temperanue, since
‘this will affect the exhaust temperature and other engine performance,”
‘What is CCAI?:
‘CCA stands for Calculation Carbon Aromaticty Index, which shows an ignitahility index. The
‘index, in consideration of the relation between aromatic compound content in fuel cil and the ignt-
ability is used to obtain the aromaticity degree in relation with the fuel oil properties. The larger
the CCAI value, the lager the firing delay for inferior ignitability. In this case, the HIFO direct
‘stating isnot possible or exhaust color is aggravated due to faulty combustion.

‘The blending ratio of M.D.O. and H.0. in the case of blended burning set forth in above ‘Table 5-3 is fixed
‘on the basis of representative properties given in Table 5-2. As M.D.O. is blended to a low-cost, high-
‘viscosity fuel oil, the viscosity will decrease more rapidly than the blending ratio of M.D.O., but impurities
‘will only change almost proportionately. Therefore, in the case of blended burning, it is necessary to pay.

5-2-1, Lub, Oll for Engine
Selection of the proper lubricating oil Is important for a diesel engine. In case of using an
inappropriate lub. oil, sticking fof piston rings, seizure and carly wear of pistons, cylinder
liners and bearings, ete. will occur. Consequently, discreetly select the lubricating oll to be
used.
Lube oll with an alkalinity value matching that of the heavy fuel can be used even from the
beginning of the M.D.O. period with no il effects if you wish to begin using heavy fuel within
the first 300 hours of operation following the initial running-in, (Seo Tables 5-6 & 5-7 . for
information on choosing the correct lube oll.)
If the engine is to be operated for 2 prolonged period of time (300 hours or longer) for M.D.O.
only, use lube oil with an alkalinity value of 9~15.
20~30 hours of M.D.O. is required after changing parts such as pistons, piston rings.and
‘ylinder liners.
effects feared by use of lube oll of a high T.B.N, when using Diessl Oll continuously.
If lub. olf of a high total base number (T-B.N.) is used when using fuel oil of a low sulfur
content, additive (calcium corbonate) of Iub. oil sticks to the high-temperature area to-
gether with carbon residue and causes ill effects as mentioned below: For that reason, use
the proper lub. oll.
‘Accumulation of the aforementioned deposits on the combustion chamber hinders sliding of
piston rings and may cause scarfing to the rings, cylinder linérs, etc. Besides, they may cause
bitein and blow-by If intruded into exhaust valves,
‘Accumulation of the aforementioned deposits on the turbine nozzle narrows the opening of
turbine nozzle and may cause surging.

5-3-1, Lub, Oil for Engine:
1) Deterioration Checking Time
‘Once in every 500 hours or so of engine operation or whenever there is a fear of mixing into lub.
oil such as water, fuel oil or other that affects deterioration of lub..oil.
2) Method of Judgement (Guide)
‘As lub. oil is being used for a long time, even if lub. oll contro! to cope with the change in pro-
erties of Iub. oil is enforced meantime, the spoiled or deteriorated condition of lub. oil could
not be amended in time to the proper condition by oil purifying measures. In such case, itis
necessary to change wholly the oil in use with new oil.
‘Although criterion for changing this oil in use could not be determined indiscriminately accord-
4ng to its using time alone because there is a difference in operating conditions of engine from
‘one engine to the next, an instance of guide is given below:
However, we recommend you to request to your lub. oll supplier to do property analysis Gf lub.
coil in use and then to pass a judgement whether this lub. ofl can be used continuously or not for
you. Besides, if you choose to a simple method of judgement, such a spot tedk kit which
furnishes you with such information as residue of total base number, degree of spoiling, deter-
gent dispersion, etc, is available from the most of oil suppliers. Thus, you purchase and employ-
‘ment of such test kit are also suggested.

+ If the cooling water system is of the open-circuit specifications, consult with the supplier of corrosion
inhibitor because the concentration of corrosion inhibitor in such cooling water system may decrease
cri i expected
‘+ Note that a corrosion inhibitor that also functions as an anti-freeze has a low thermal conductivity and
may be overheated during running with load.
+ Inthe case where aluminum materials are in the cooling water system, use a brand of
S
Use additive only after referring to its instructions.
As a simplified method of cooling water concentration control, it is suggested to replace the cooling
‘water (added with rust inhibitor) in total volume with the new one periodically.
Do not dump cooling water which used the aforementioned additives directly to the ocean nor
river,
In the case of discharging cooling water to which additives have been introduced, such water has
10 be treated according to instructions given by supplier of additives.
‘The aforementioned additives is a chemical only for industrial water treatment use, do not use for
