One of the seven domains that makes teachers effective in the 21st Century in
the Philippines necessitates them to apply a variety of assessment tools and strategies
in monitoring, evaluating, documenting and reporting learners’ needs, progress and
achievement. They use assessment data in a variety of ways to inform and enhance
the teaching and learning process and programs. They provide learners with the
necessary feedback about learning outcomes that informs the reporting cycle and
enables teachers to select, organize and use sound assessment processes.

Classroom assessment is a cooperative process. It involves

both the learners and the teachers. It is an integral part in
the teaching-learning process. Appropriate assessment
ensures that learners succeeds in moving from guided to
independent display of knowledge, understanding, and
skills and to enable them to transfer this successfully in
future situations (Vygotsky, 1978). Assessment facilitates
development of learners’ higher order thinking and 21st
century skills.

This course focuses on the principles, development and utilization of

conventional assessment tools to improve the teaching learning process. It
emphasizes the use of assessment of, as, and for learning in measuring knowledge,
comprehension and other thinking skills in the cognitive, psychomotor or affective
domains. It takes pre-service teachers through the standard steps in test construction
and development, the application of grading systems, and the provision of timely,
accurate, and constructive feedback to improve learner performance. Trends and issues
related to assessment are also addressed.

At the end of the session, you are expected to explain the:

(1) meaning of educational assessment;
(2) principles in educational assessment;
(3) types of assessment; and
(4) users of educational assessment.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT.

Leave the L column blank first.

“Educational assessment is the process of

gathering information about what students have
learned in their educational environments”.

The term assessment is derived from the Latin assidere

which means “to sit beside” (Wiggins, 1993).

It is a process of gathering evidence of learners’ performance over a period to determine

learning and mastery of skills. Varied tools such as journals, portfolios, written work,
rubrics for performance tasks, tests and other learning tasks can be used as evidence of
learning.

Assessment is a collaborative process. It requires both the learners and the teachers to
work together towards attaining its goal – improve student’s learning and provide the
students and other school’s stakeholders with reliable information regarding
student progress and extended of the attainment of the expected learning
outcomes.

Explain why assessment means “to sit beside”.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT

Our main goal as educators is to provide the best quality of education to our
students. The type of assessment that we give to our students before, during and after
the teaching-learning process predicts whether we have successfully attained such goal.
Understanding the basic principles of assessment is integral in coming up with varied
and developmentally appropriate assessment tools.
Below show the GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT.

Let’s travel down memory lane, go back to when you were just an
elementary or high school student, which of these principles were evident
in the assessment strategies and assessment tools that your teachers
utilized?

Make a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and difference

between formative and summative assessments.

USERS OF EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT

Educational assessment is a process. Being so will

require a lot of effort – from needs assessment,
planning to feedbacking and reflecting. Since its
purpose is to improve student’s learning and provide
the students and other school’s stakeholders with
reliable information regarding student progress and
extended of the attainment of the expected learning
outcomes, it isn’t a one-man band but rather, a
conjunction of minds, hands and hearts. The
teachers use it for very important instructional
decisions and reflections. The students need it to
evaluate their own learning, build knowledge, identify
their strengths and weaknesses, and target and
continually improve. Other school stakeholders such
as the parents and other members of the community
use it for instructional and extension of learning
support as well as for policy making.

Explicate the African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child”.
