Classification of Mechanism

The purpose of the mechanism is generally to transform the motion.

Torfason classify mechanism according to motion transformation and shows 262 mechanisms.

• Snap-Action mechanisms
• Linear actuators
• Clamping mechanisms
• Ratchets
• Indexing mechanisms
• Oscillating mechanisms
• Reciprocating mechanisms
• Reversing mechanisms
• Coupling and connectors
• Sliding connectors
• Stop, Pause and Hesitation mechanisms
• Curve generators
• Straight line generators
Snap-Action Mechanisms
Generally spring based mechanism
Linear Actuators
Clamping Mechanisms
Ratchets
Used in locks, jacks, clockwork etc.
Indexing mechanisms
An indexing mechanism or intermittent drive is a mechanism that turns a wheel or shaft a small amount then stops
for a set amount of time the turns again.

Indexing in a milling machine is mainly used to cut gear teeth accurately and equal spacing of the teeth of the gear.
Indexing tables in assembly lines, for mass production, tool changers for CNC machines etc.

Geneva mechanism
Oscillating mechanisms
Quick-return mechanism
Used in shaper machine to cut the metals.
Reciprocating Mechanism

Offset slider-crank linkage

Scotch-yoke linkage

Quick-return mechanism
Whitworth quick-return linkage
Coupling and connectors

Hooke joint

Two-shaft coupling mechanisms

Straight line Mechanisms

Chebyschev straight line linkage ()

Inversion of Mechanisms
When different links are chosen as the frame, the relative motions between the various links are not altered, but their
absolute motions (those measured with respect to the frame) may be changed significantly.
The process of choosing different links for the frame is known as kinematic inversion.

Four distinct inversions of the fourbar slider-crank mechanism

Reciprocating engines, quick-return mechanism, Rotary Oscillating cylinder engines, Hand pump mechanisms
compressors etc. engine crank and slotted lever
