Global catastrophe is one of Hollywood’s best-loved themes, but how realistic are disaster film scenarios?
A A sudden climate change
In the film The Day after Tomorrow, a weather circulation system over the Atlantic referred to by scientists as
AMOC shuts down. This plunges Europe and North America into a sudden and severe ice age. The film was put
down as rubbish by scientists at the time of release in 2004, but a new study by the University of Southampton and
the Max Planck Institute is making people reconsider. Using sophisticated climate modelling programs, researchers
calculated that climate change caused by carbon emissions could indeed cause AMOC to shut down – cooling the
planet instead of warming it for a period of about 20 years. What is unrealistic in the film, however, is the speed
and severity with which this happens. However badly climate affects AMOC, it won’t happen in the way depicted
in the film.
B A zombie attack
Films such as Resident Evil and The Walking Dead portray embattled heroes fighting for their lives against a plague
of killer zombies. Whatever Hollywood says, it’s impossible for dead people to rise up from the grave. But could
some future disease infect people and control their minds, turning them violent? Worryingly, some biologists think
so. Some mind-controlling diseases already exist, such as the parasite toxoplasmosis. This makes mice lose their
fear of cats – the parasite needs the mouse to be eaten by the cat in order to complete its life cycle. Interestingly,
human studies show that whoever becomes infested with toxoplasmosis tends to become bolder and take more
risks. Another virus already exists which causes people to become violent, and even bite others: rabies. Luckily,
rabies is difficult to get, but viruses evolve over time and change. If one day rabies became as infectious as flu, it
would be time to arm yourself and lock the doors!
C A meteorite impact
Asteroid impacts are another favourite Hollywood theme – with blockbuster featuring planet-killing rocks that
hurtle towards Earth, only to meet their match in a heroic astronaut like Bruce Willis in Armageddon or Robert
Duvall in Deep Impact. Those tough-taking, good-looking heroes always manage to save us, only to die themselves
after a suitably moving farewell. The fact is that Earth has been hit by many big asteroids in the past – and will be
again. A huge asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, causing worldwide destruction. So the big
question is, when will this happen again? What astronomers know is that there are millions of asteroids out there. A
really big one could hit us at almost any time – but statistically it isn’t likely for thousands of years. By that time
scientists hope to have figured out a way to deal with them – either destroying the asteroid or changing its orbit so
it flies harmlessly past Earth.

alien life. A division of SETI 4_____ the Post Detection Task Force has plans in place for that to do in the event of
alien contact. These basically involve contacting the United Nations and scientific agencies, sharing data, and
