oko) imit test of Sulphate is based on the reaction of soluble sulphate with barium chloride in presence of dilute hydrochloric acid to form barium sulphate which appears as turbidity. Dil HCI Cl" BaCl, ———* _BaS0, ¥+ Ba" Due to the formation of precipitates, the solution appears turbid and the extent of turbidity depends on the amount of sulphates present. If the turbidity produced by the test is less than that of standard, it means that the sample contains sulphates within the prescribed limits. Procedure: * Assolution of the substance is acidified with HCI, diluted to volume and treated with Barium sulphate reagent ( a solution of Barium chloride containing alcohol and a small proportion of Potassium sulphate) and the turbidity (due to the formation of Barium sulphate) is compared with that produced by addition of the reagent to a standard solution containing a definite quantity of sulphuric acid. > If the turbidity produced by the test solution has been less than standard turbidity, the sample would pass the limit test for sulphate. Result = If the opalescence produced in the test is less intense than that of standard opalescence, the sample passes the limit test for chloride and vice versa.
