Problem Set - 1 in Fluid Mechanics

This document provides 10 problems related to calculating specific gravity, specific weight, and specific volume. The problems involve determining: [1] the mass of air in a room, [2] the weight of a spherical balloon filled with air, [3] the density of a water-ethyl alcohol mixture, [4] which objects will float or sink in water based on density, [5] if soy sauce will float or sink, [6] the weight of a liquid with a given specific gravity and volume, [7] the weight of a liquid with a specific gravity and volume in metric units, [8] the specific gravity of alpha-tocopherol, [9] the mass and weight of air in a room

PROBLEM SET#1

TOPIC: CALCULATING SPECIFIC GRAVITY, SPECIFIC WEIGHT AND SPECIFIC VOLUME

1. What is the mass of air that fills a rectangular room that measures 10 m by 12 m by 15 m? The
density of air is 1.29 kg/ m3.

2. What is the weight of a large spherical balloon filled with air that has a radius of 8m. (The mass of the
balloon’s skin is 0.45 kg).

3. 30 Liter of water is mixed with 40 L of ethyl alcohol (p= 789 kg/m 3). What is the density of the
mixture?

4. Based on the information provided on the table, which of the following objects will float? Which of the
following objects will sink? (the density of water = 1 g/mL)

5. You want to make a marinade that contains soy sauce, water and other various ingredients. There are
71.94 g in 60 mL of soy sauce. Will the soy sauce float or sink in water? (density of water is 1 g/mL).
Show your solution and explain what will happen to the given situation.

6. What is the weight in grams of 3620 ml of alcohol with a specific gravity of 0.82?

7. What is the weight in grams of 2 fl of a liquid having a specific gravity of 1.118?

(NOTE: fl means femtolitre, a metric unit of volume. It is best to convert the given volume to its metric
equivalent first and solve the problem in metric system.)

8. α-Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E that is a yellow-brown viscous liquid with a density of 0.950
g/cm3.Calculate its specific gravity.

9. Find the mass and weight of the air at 20 degrees Celsius in a living room with a 4.0 m by 5.0 m and a
ceiling of 3.0 m high.

10. A certain type of wood having specific gravity of 0.5 is being submerged into the water. Will the
object sink or float? Show your solution.
