CREATIVE NONFICTION
It is a genre of writing that includes literary styles and techniques to produce
factually accurate or real-life narratives. Some examples of creative non-fiction are
biography, autobiography, memoir, diary, travel writing, food writing, literary
journalism, chronicle, and essays. Creative Nonfiction has five elements.

1
● Setting – the place of the narrative is established in the beginning to visualize
the plot development.
● Character – the characters are based on real-life but aesthetically added with
various images.
● Plot – the plot development of this narrative usually follows Freytag's Pyramid
(Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution).
● Descriptive Imagery – a figurative language where the author uses vivid
images to describe a certain phenomenon.
● Distinctive Voice – the Voice of the narrative is written in the first person
point of view.

Some examples of Creative Nonfiction are 1000 Gifts by Ann Voscamp, Wind,
Sand, and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and Life was hard, Love was easy by
Pat Evangelista.

FLASH FICTION

Flash Fiction is a fictional work of extreme brevity that still offers character
and plot development. It has four main elements.
● Characters – The characters are established at the beginning of the
narrative.
● Plot – It has a standard and complete plot but uses various techniques to
abridge a complete story into a short narrative.
● Hook is a literary technique at the beginning that captures the reader's
attention.
● Ending – It is a successful flash fiction that has a twist in the ending.

Writing flash fiction is quite challenging, so writers use in-medias res to make

the plot where the beginning of the story starts with the middle of the climax and
introduces the story through flashbacks and foreshadows. Six-word short stories,
twitterature, minisaga, and microfiction are some forms of flash fiction.

MANGA

Manga is a comic or graphic novel that originated in Japan. It is a way of

storytelling through the use of pictures and dialogue. Manga has four elements.

● Pictures – The audience can distinguish manga from other western comics
because artists have developed unique features of their characters to identify
the manga art, such as wide eyes, small mouths, stylish hairstyles of various
colors, and exaggerated emotions.
● Words – Short characters' dialogues usually use onomatopoeia to entail
emotions predicted in the visuals.

2
● Balloons – These are two-dimensional shapes where the words are inserted.
● Frames – These are where all the graphics are inserted that indicate each
scene.
Nowadays, the Japanese have turned manga into live-action series known as
"anime." Some famous manga series are Naruto, One Piece, and Attack on Titan.

BLOG

Also called "weblog," it is an informational website that circulates over the

World Wide Web consisting of distinct and informal diary-style text entries (posts).
The Internet is used to publish a blog to reach as much audience as it can all over
the world. One way to do it is for a blog to have the following three key elements:

● Headline – This is the captivating text that indicates the nature of the article.
● Content – This is emotional, unique, and well-organized information on the
topic.
● Layout – This includes all the graphics arranged creatively to make up the
aesthetic look of the blog. It also involves the typography or the arrangement
of texts, which should also be well-designed, and the graphics must be
aligned with the content.

GRAPHIC NOVEL

A Graphic Novel is a book made up of comic content. It includes fiction,

nonfiction, and anthological work. It consists of four major elements.

● Panel – This is the frame containing a single scene.

● Speech Balloon – This refers to the two-dimensional shapes where words
are indicated.
● Effects – These can be sound effects through onomatopoeic words or motion
lines.
● Cartoons – These are the visual art of the book.

One of the best-selling graphic novels made in the US is DC Comics which

made fame Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, and the Marvel Graphic
Novels, which gave birth to the famous Avengers today, including Ironman, Thor,
Captain America, and the Hulk. In the Philippines, we also have our local graphic
novels. The most famous are Mars Ravelo's creations, who introduced us to
Captain Barbel, Lastikman, Darna, and Dyesebel.
