GOALS FOR THIS GUIDEBOOK
The goal of this guidebook is to support Houston Methodist’s
commitment to delivering the highest quality patient care - the
 Methodist Experience.
The guidebook establishes a quality level for displaying artwork in the
hospital that have been selected for their conformance to evidence-
based art principles with aims for:
1.Creating a healing environment for your space
    2.Enhancing your staff’s morale
    3.Meets patient safety regulations
4.Family and visitor satisfaction and well-being
    5.Material and aesthetic maintenance
WHY ADD VISUAL ARTS?
 • Healing: Art makes patients and staff feel better.
 • Positive distraction: Art allows patients and visitors to focus on
something other than their (and the surrounding people’s) condition.
 • Branding: Art improves the perception of care at the hospital and
serves as an element that users identify with.
 • Deinstitutionalization: Art makes the hospital less intimidating.
 • De-stressor: Patients, visitors, and staff use favorite pieces of art to
destress; this is particularly true for the staff.
 • Way-finding: Prominent pieces of art serve as landmarks for
 patients and visitors.[3]

CASE STUDIES FOR VISUAL ARTS
In a study on how patients actually experience and use art in hospitals
they found the inclusion of artwork in patient areas to have “the potential
to positively affect patients’ satisfaction.” They found that art, “influences
patients’ experience of safety, comfort, time and identity” and that “art
affects the degree of satisfaction with hospital treatment.” [2]

PART 2: IMAGE SELECTION
SELECTING YOUR IMAGES
You can select images yourself, we can assist in selecting appropriate images or if you
think your staff would enjoy helping select images, we can facilitate a survey where
employees rank images that they think would best contribute to a healing environment.
The CPAM staff is available to work with you to select the appropriate images for your
space. We can help you narrow down images based on what outcomes you hope to
achieve.
Most of the photography is centered on nature with a wide variety of subjects and colors
for you to choose from. The available images follow principles of evidenced-based art
research, which is based on scientific analysis of the impact of art in healthcare
environments on patients, staff, and visitors.
The following pages offer suggestions on how to think about the images you select and
you can view a selection of images from our collection at the link below.
