MODULE 4
TITLE: COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS
Learning Competencies:
1. Define Composite Function.
2. Perform Composition of Functions.
____________________________________________________________
The operation on composition of function involves substituting a function into another
function.
Definition of Composite Function
Given two functions f(x) and g(x), the composite function denoted by is
defined by
and the domain of is the set of all numbers x in the domain of , such that
is the domain of .
f is the outer function and g is the inner function.
Similarly, we define as follows:
g is the outer function and f is the inner function.
Study the following examples.
Example 1:
If and , find

Solutions:
1.
Step 1: Apply the definition of composition of functions. (f is the outer function and g is
the inner function)
Step 2: Apply the definition of f.
Step 3. Simplify the results.
2. (follow the steps in no. 1, but here g is the outer and f is the inner function)
3. (g is the outer and inner function)
