OLR Interview question
1. Could you tell me something about yourself?
Yes Sir, My name is Luu van Khoi, I am 31 years old, I come from Haiphong, it is a nice port city
in Vietnam. I am married and have two children, one son and one daughter, my son is 4 years
old and my daughter is 2. I studied in Vietnam maritime college N01 and until now I have
worked on cargo ships for 7 years with 2 years experience as OLR. That is something about
myself.
2. What is your position/ rank ? And What are your duties ?
I am an Oiler, perform the duties for engine watch keeping under the supervision of the duty
engineer and under command of the chief engineer. Perform maintenance work as assistant for
the Engine department as C/E and Engineer’s order. Report any abnormal situation
immediately.
3. How long have you worked on board as OLR? And How many ships have you work as
OLR?
I have worked as OLR for 2 years and 2 ships
4. What is your last vessel’s name? and how long have you worked on your last vessel?
My last vessel’s name is MV Hungvuong 03 and I have worked for 10 month
5. What is your vessel trading area?
She operating in ASIA some port name is…Singapore, Kuantan malaysia, Jakarta Indonesia,
Yangon Myanmar, Haiphong Vietnam, Hochiminh vietnam, Fancheng China…
6. How many Crane or Derrick on your last vessel
Have two cranes and two derricks Sir.
7. What are the nationalities of crew members on M/V Ocean Queen?
They are Vietnamese and Indian
8. Have you ever worked with a Chinese crew?
Yes, I have, some ranks are: Capt, CE, CO, 2E
9. Do you like Chinese food?
Yes, I do. I like dumpling, it is china traditional food
10. How many countries have you ever been to?
So many like: Japan, China, Korea...Singapore, Malaysia
11. Have you ever worked on foreign ship before?
Yes, I have worked for a Japanese ship, a Chinese ship...
12. What do you do if your watch standby engine for departure?
- Start GE and synchronize two GE check GE in normal operation
- Open service air and start ME lub oil pump
- pre pumping for cylinder oil
- turning gear engage and starting for 30 minutes
- keep ME Fresh water temperature abt 60oC and start circulating fresh water pump
- keep Fuel Oil service tank, settling tank for heating and drain out any water and slugde
- call engineer for testing ME
13. what should you do if in your watch GE exhaust temp of one or two cylinder very
high?
- Immediately start stb GE for replacing
- Reduce load for high exhaust temp. GE
- Call engineer for checking
14.How to prepare for starting the generator engine?
- Check entirely the GE and auxiliary systems and set all valves in stand by position
- Check oil level in sump tank and turning gear for GE
- Open air service for blow air of GE
- Close indicator v/v
- Start GE and waiting for 15 minutes
- Synchronize with other GE
- Share load
15.How to stop a diesel engine in cold weather?
- Change FO to DO
- Keep freshwater running with pre- heat at 60 to 80oC
- Drain out all water in stopped pipeline
16.How do you synchronize with two or more generators
- Start the necessary synchronize engine
- Control voltage and frequency of the engine to desired value by acting on frequency control
knob (increase engine speed).
- Turn on the synchronizer, the hand of the synchronizer will turn either clockwise direction
- Control frequency so that the hand turns slowly closewise. This means frequency of the need
to frequency engine is a little bit bigger the one of the operating engine
- Close the circuit breaker of the need the need-to-synchronize engine to put it into parallel
operation when the hand of the synchronizer reaches upright position (12 o’clock point)
- Increase load for the engine by simultaneously acting on frequence control knobs of two
engines (increase the synchronized engine and decrease the operating engine)
17.How do you prepare to start the aux. boiler?
-Check entirely the boiler and auxiliary systems and set all valves in stand by position
-Put feed water pump into operation
-Select the burner control switch at automatic mode
-Open the air vent cock until steam flows to pure air out
-Open the main steam valve little to heat the steam piping when drum pressure reaches about 2
kg/cm2
