Neighbourhood

1. The concept of a neighborhood largely relates to a geographically defined area

within a city or town that typically shares common physical and social characteristics.
It is a fundamental unit of analysis in urban planning and design. Some of these
characteristics may include Scale and size of the neighbourhood, community
engagement and social cohesion, land and zoning etc.

Environmental Area
2. I would define an environmental area as a specific geographical location within an
urban or regional context that is characterized by its ecological significance, natural
features, and environmental value. It refers to a distinct area where the natural
environment plays a crucial role and requires special consideration in the planning
and development processes.

Briefly explain with a diagram classical model or Urban design

3.

Classical models or urban designs refer to planning and design principles that draw
inspiration from historical urban forms, particularly those found in ancient
civilizations or traditional cities. These models emphasize specific design elements
and spatial configurations that have been influential in shaping urban environments
throughout history. Eg. Axial or Radial Pattern
Explain road hierarchy in Nigeria

4. In Nigeria, road hierarchy refers to the classification and organization of roads

based on their functional importance and traffic capacity. The road hierarchy system
in Nigeria helps to manage and guide the flow of vehicles, pedestrians, and goods
efficiently throughout the country. It is sub divided into different categories they are

 Expressways (Federal Roads) which connect major cities and serve as the
backbone of the national road network. They are designed for high-speed travel,
with limited access points, grade-separated interchanges, and multiple lanes
 State Highways: State highways are roads that fall under the jurisdiction of state
governments. They connect major towns and cities within a particular state.
 Urban Arterial Roads which connects residential areas, suburbs areas and
different neighbouring and commercial centers.
 Collector Roads which serves are link between local streets and arterial roads.

Whait is GPS

5a. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that provides accurate positioning,

timing, and navigation information to users worldwide. It consists of a network of
orbiting satellites, ground-based control stations, and receivers that communicate with
each other to determine the exact geographic coordinates of a GPS receiver.

Uses Of GPS
5b. Uses of GPS:

A. Emergency Services: GPS is instrumental in emergency situations. It enables

emergency responders to accurately locate and navigate to incidents, speeding up
response times. Additionally, GPS-enabled personal devices like smartphones can
transmit location information during emergencies, enhancing personal safety.
B. Geospatial Data Collection: GPS is widely used for collecting geospatial data. It
aids in mapping and surveying activities, allowing professionals to accurately
measure and document locations, boundaries, and topographic features. This data is
valuable for urban planning, land management, environmental assessment, and
infrastructure development.

C. Fitness Tracking: GPS has become a popular tool for fitness enthusiasts.
Wearable devices equipped with GPS capabilities can track running, cycling, and
other outdoor activities, providing information on distance, speed, and elevation. This
allows users to monitor their progress, set goals, and analyze their performance.

D. Timing and Synchronization: GPS provides highly accurate timing and

synchronization information. It is used in various industries that require precise
timing, such as telecommunications, power distribution, financial transactions, and
scientific research.

GPS and Drone technology

5c. The relationship between GPS (Global Positioning System) and drone technology
is integral and symbiotic. GPS technology is a fundamental component of drone
technology, providing precise positioning, navigation, and timing information to
drones. Drones equipped with GPS receivers can determine their exact location in
real-time, allowing them to autonomously follow pre-programmed flight paths,
navigate along specific waypoints, or return to a designated home point. GPS enables
drones to operate autonomously and perform complex tasks efficiently and accurately.
It also plays a crucial role in implementing geofencing and flight restriction systems,
ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing safety by preventing drones from
entering prohibited airspace. Moreover, the integration of GPS with drones has
revolutionized mapping, surveying, and data collection applications. Drones can
capture aerial imagery or LiDAR data while precisely recording the location of each
point, enabling the generation of accurate maps, 3D models, or orthomosaic images.
