Passivation and Degrassing Guidelines

The document provides instructions for passivating industrial piping and tanks. It outlines the following key steps: [1] Mechanically clean and prepare the tanks by polishing welded joints, isolating the area, and providing safety equipment. [2] Degrease using an alkali solution followed by flushing with water. [3] Perform acid treatment using a nitric acid and ammonium bifluoride solution followed by flushing with deionized water. [4] Drain lines with nitrogen gas and test with hydrogen peroxide before drying and covering pipes to prevent contamination.

PASSIVATION AND DEGREASING OF INDUSTRIAL PIPING AND TANKS

Before Passivation:

Welded joints of the tanks must be polished before passivation.

The tanks must be cleaned mechanically before passivation.
Remove or bypass the equipment that cannot be in passivation.
Isolate and evacuate the passivation area.
Provide properly safety equipment for all employers who will work nearby. ie: Helmet,
mask, goggles, chemical-resistant protective gloves, Standard PVC or rubber acid suit,
chemical resistant boots of rubber or PVC, rinsing water bottles and gas mask.

Procedure:

1. Flushing with water.

2. Degreasing
1-3 % Industrial alkali solution, for example P3 Galvaclean.
Circulation time 2 – 4 hours, temperature 40 – 60 C.

3. Flushing with water.

4. Acid treatment
Will be made by using 15 - 20 % nitric acid solution + 2 % ammonium bifluoride or
hydrofluoric acid
Circulation time 2 – 4 hours, temperature 30 – 50 C.

5. Flushing with DEMI-water, if not available can be used condensate instead.

6. Draining of the pipelines with nitrogen gas or with instrument pressure air.

7. Testing the tanks and lines with 5 % peroxide.

Draining and drying of the pipelines with nitrogen gas or with instrument pressure air.

After Passivation:

End of the pipes must be covered with caps or plastic to avoid contamination
Manholes of tanks to be closed.

Reconnect all flanges and equipment using new gaskets.

All waste chemicals must be handled following local regulations.
