Foreword
The descriptions and instructions in this manual are based on design and
method studies performed up to and including January 2004.
The products are under continual development. Values and repair methods
may therefore differ on vehicles and for components manufactured after
this date.

General
Instrumentation
The new Multiplex electrical system introduced by
Volvo Buses is based on a number of control units for
components and functions communicating with each
other via common data links. This makes the system
flexible and expandable.

Design
The connector pins on the lighting control unit (LCM) have
differing electrical properties. The abbreviations used for
signal types are described below.
AI Analogue Input
AO Analogue Output
RES Resistance
The signal types HDI, LDI, HDO and LDO have different
logic levels and structures in the control unit. The signals
have therefore different properties, see table. Note
that the limits for the different signal characteristics are
programmable and can therefore differ slightly between
the different pins. Signal types AO, AI and PWM have
fully individual programmable properties and will therefore
not be covered in detail here.

Function
Instrument control unit, functions
The following functions are handled by the instrument
control unit.
Display
The display is standard equipment in all versions of the
instrument. The functions can be divided into two groups:
Under the display are two lamps, one yellow (info) and
one red (stop). At the same time as an automatically
activated message is shown on the display, one of the
two lamps lights up. Which of the lamps that lights up
depends on how serious the fault is.

List of parameters
The following table lists all the available customer and
vehicle parameters. A link to Volvo (VDA) is required
in order to program the vehicle parameters. This
is indicated with a connection symbol in the far left
column. Vehicle parameters are either accessories or
functions determined by legal requirements. Customer
parameters, on the other hand, can be programmed
without connecting to VDA.

Fault codes, fault tracing
The control units on the information link communicate
according to the SAE J1587 standard. The standard
has been extended with Volvo’s own supplement
(PPID, PSID). The fault codes set by the control units
contain information that is described by the following
abbreviations.
MID Message Identification Description – PSID Proprietary Subsystem Identification
identification of a control unit. Description – Volvo unique identification
of a component.
PID Parameter Identification Description –
identification of a parameter (value). FMI Failure Mode Identifier – identification
of fault types.
PPID Proprietary Parameter Identification
Description – Volvo unique identification
of a parameter (value).

FMI Display text SAE-text
0 Value too high Data applies but above normal operating range
1 Value too low Data applies but below normal operating range
2 Incorrect data Intermittent or incorrect data
3 Electric fault Abnormally high voltage or short circuit to higher voltage
4 Electric fault Abnormally low voltage or short circuit to lower voltage
5 Electric fault Abnormally low current or break
6 Electric fault Abnormally high current or short circuit to earth
7 Mechanical fault Incorrect response from mechanical system
8 Mechanical or electric fault Abnormal frequency
9 Communication error Abnormal update rate
10 Mechanical or electric fault Abnormal vibration
11 Unknown fault Non-identifiable fault
12 Component fault Defective unit or component

Test measurements
Control unit measurements are carried out using 2x
9998505 and an adapter box 9998699 connected to the
control unit connectors. This allows direct voltage and
resistance measurements on the control unit pins.
