ASSIGNMENT -1
Subject-Engineering Mechanics Semester- 3 rd
1. Define Engineering Mechanics. Write other branches of engineering mechanics.
2. What are different methods of studying the equilibrium of coplaner forces ? Describe any one of them.
3. The magnitude of the resultant of two concurrent forces including an angle of 90 degree between them is
√13 kN. When this included angle is changed to 60 degree, the magnitude of the resultant becomes √19
kN. Find the magnitude of the two forces.
4. List out the steps to be followed to draw the free body diagram of a rigid body.
5. Explain about the three laws of mechanics with practical applications.
6. Find out the resultant of the system of forces given below:
1. 20N inclined at 30º towards north of east.
2. 25 N towards North.
3. 30N towards north west.
4. 35N inclined at 40º towards south of west.
7. The following forces act at a point : (i) 20 N inclined at 30° towards North of East, (ii) 25 N towards North,
(iii) 30 N towards North West, and (iv) 35 N inclined at 40° towards South of West. Find the magnitude
and direction of the resultant force.
8. Explain about the types of supports and their reactions
9. State and prove Lami’s Theorem.
10. Explain clearly the procedure for finding out the resultant force analytically as well as graphically.
11. Discuss the various types of equilibrium.
12. Two smooth circular cylinders, each of weight W = 100
N and radius r = 6 cm are connected at the centers by a
string AB of length L = 16 cm and rest upon a horizontal
plane, supporting above them a third cylinder of weight
Q = 200 N and radius r = 6 cm as show in Fig. Find the
tension in the string AB and reaction force produced on
the floor at D and E.
13. A circular roller of weight 100 N and radius 10 cm hangs
by a ties rod AB = 20 cm and rests against a smooth
vertical wall at C as shown in the Figure. Determine the
force F in the rod and normal reaction at C.
14. Two inclined rollers, each of weight 100 N are supported
by an inclined plane and a vertical wall as shown in the
Figure. Assuming smooth surfaces find the reactions
induced at points A ,B and C.
15. Two smooth spheres of weight W and radius r each are
in equilibrium in a horizontal
channel of A and B vertical sides as shown in Fig.
Find the force exerted by each sphere on the other. Calculate
these values, if r = 250 mm,
b = 900 mm and W = 100 N.
