Topic: News and the media

When used responsibly, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social platforms can be
great ways for teens to connect with the world, but they are problematic if used vice-versa.
For example, going online exposes them to bad characters, mean people, unhealthy images,
etc. Discuss the ways teenagers could deal with the situation.

1.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Nowadays, social media plays an important role in our daily lives regardless of age.
Social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter contribute a lot in terms of
communication in which we can communicate with others who live far away from us, those
who cannot be reached in close distance. However, while depending much on social media it
will bring more harm than benefits especially for the teenagers since they are the generation
that grew up with social media and spending so much time on it. Most of them enjoy
scrolling through social media without worrying about the consequences such as unnecessary
pop-up ads which contain bad character and unhealthy image which leads to unwanted things
to happen.

Therefore, the main problem that teenagers face is about unwanted pop up ads in
which if they accidentally click on it, it will expose them to the darkside of social media.
Moreover, it will be a big problem since most of these pop-up ads contain viruses that could
affect the user’s device with only a blink of an eye. If we do not take this matter seriously,
that might be a problem for the teenagers in the future since social media has all the details of
the users that could be leaked anytime without us realising. Well, social media is supposed to
ease our burden in life and also be a coping mechanism after a whole day of work, but due to
these pop-up ads, it leads to something traumatised.Thus, this is a huge problem we face in
our community. If we can't do something to solve this problem. It will cause our country to
face bigger problems. Hence why, the problem we stated needs to be solved immediately in
order to avoid such things mentioned above.

2.0 RECOMMENDED SOLUTION

After detailing the problem faced by teenagers, which is that social media can have a
negative influence on them, we came up with the best solution for the modern era. The idea is
that we will create an application which is named ‘iFocus’. This app mainly focuses on the
safety of the social media users especially for teenagers. This application could be easily
downloaded in all devices including laptop, tablet or phone and does not require a lot of
space and storage. This application also needs them to create accounts that need a verification
for their age so that the algorithm of the app can filter the content that is safe for them to
enjoy. This application's features include ads blocker, pop up campaign and hidden setting for
suitable content.

First and foremost, advertisements sometimes can be overwhelming for teenagers on

websites, social media platforms, and mobile applications. Therefore, the application that we
create will provide software that stops advertisements from displaying on the screen namely
ads blocker. Teenagers may benefit from them since they can get rid of unwanted or flashy
advertisements that might distract them from their goals or violate their privacy. For example,
teenagers may not want to see advertisements for alcohol or tobacco, and by using ad
blockers, these ads can be simply deleted to ensure that they only see content that is relevant
to their age group. Ad blocking software can improve a teen's online experience and help
them concentrate more easily on their intended activity because they rely on the internet for
entertainment, communication, and education.

The next feature is a pop up campaign. The pop up campaign will appear at least
twice a day to encourage and give awareness to teenagers about social media. The pop up
campaign might focus on teaching teens the proper ways to utilise social media so that they
can interact with friends and others who share their interests, hobbies, and passions. Social
media can assist individuals in creating communities, getting involved with conversations,
and interacting with people from various origins and cultures, all of which can extend their
viewpoints and aid in personal development only if they use it properly. Basically, the pop up
campaign that will be displayed in the application is about how to use social media properly

and to remember the social concerns that actually arise as a result of incorrect utilisation of
social media.

Lastly, teenagers are exposed to violent material on digital platforms more frequently
as technology develops. Their emotional and psychological health may suffer as a result of
this exposure. In order to avoid this negative impact to happen, we implement settings that
protect teenagers from violent content by adding a hidden setting. For example, preventing
teens from accessing violent content such as suicide, sexual and bully content that filtered by
their age and will be automatically removed from their view could be one method to
implement these settings. To confirm that the teenagers are of legal age to read the content, a
procedure for verification would be necessary. Other options include developing
age-appropriate categories for various sorts of information or applying algorithms that
automatically hide content that contains violent terms from view. Basically this application's
ultimate objective is to develop a setting where teenagers can consume media in which is
safer and healthier.

3.0 DESCRIPTION OF CONCEPT

i) Develop an app/ settings

The rapid development of technology dramatically affects the minds of today's teenagers. The
existence of social media applications that can be accessed at the fingertips is very troubling
because their every activity can no longer be fully controlled. Therefore, we developed an
application known as "iFocus" aimed at preventing the content that teenagers can access. The
main objective of this "iFocus" was to avoid content that can damage the minds of teenagers,
such as pornography, and prohibited materials, such as cigarette advertisements and so on.

1) Ads- blocker features:

One of the function in this app is that block hidden button which helps in blocking
unnecessary ads that pop up during browsing. With just one click form user, it will
automatically block ads so the ad never shows up on your page. It can also works by
blocking out sections of a website that could be ads. With this, users can avoid the
risk of viruses on their devices or even could help in protecting users from any harm
such as scam and also block tracking companies from being able to see your online
activity which is your privacy. Simply said, it helps safeguard your user’s browser

 against malware. In addition, it is 100% free, completely, utterly, forever with the
iFocus application.

2) Hidden Features:
Users only need to press the social media icon provided in the iFocus application, and
the iFocus software will automatically block the element or content that needs to be
stopped. The primary purpose of this function is to contain content material that
should not be seen or browsed by teenagers.However, this function can only be used
in this application, it cannot be accessed outside the application.

3) Home Button:
A Home button is also provided to make searching easier for users. iFocus is also
powered by Google search to make it easier for users to browse the internet. The
Google application also has a filter function used in other applications. Also any
announcement regarding application updates and new functions being developed will
be announced on the home page.

4) Shop Features:
This application is also developed along with the facility to shop online. This
function's primary purpose was to make it easier for students to find essential items
sold at student prices. For example, law books are purchased at a student price of
RM95 compared to RM150 sold on other applications. It is clear here that this shop
button also helps students economically and does not only focus on the virtual world.

5) iForum page:
The function of this iForum is to create interaction between users and users as well as
users and application developers. This is to create a two-way relationship with the aim
of further developing the iFocus application. Not only that, iFocus also provides
facilities for users to socialise by providing communities within the application from
various angles such as learning, health and social interaction. iFocus is also powered
by tutor guidance in the academic field. Users can join the community provided and
only need to text our tutor to guide you in answering each question.

In addition to cultivating a good mind among teenagers, iFocus was also developed to
cultivate the practice of doing good in oneself while helping those in need. Also under
this segment, users can also subscribe to the exclusive student edition package where
the advantage is that users can contact our tutors outside of working hours and many
more. Every money spent will also be channelled to charities, which is in line with the
original purpose of iFocus development, which is to cultivate great minds among
teenagers.

7) iChat functions
Users can also interact with other users to communicate about learning, socialising
and so on. It is also powered by various other facilities such as the facility to upload
pictures and many more. This is in line with the development of technology and
iFocus does not lag behind to produce it for the convenience of teenagers.

8) How to use iFocus

Users only need to scan the qr displayed and they will be taken to a space application.
Users need to register an email and password before being able to use iFocus. A very
simple and conducive way that helps students in improving moral values in each
student.

4.0 ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT

This application might block almost anything that teenagers dislike. Among the
benefits provided by this application is the filtering of irrelevant advertisements such as porn,
murder, and scam. Advertisement filtering solutions are in high demand as online advertising
becomes more prevalent. Users frequently find adverts to be intrusive, invasive, or unrelated
to their interests, causing them to quit interest while surfing the page. For example, if you
enjoy playing Instagram, you may notice that unnecessary advertisements emerge, causing
you to lose a little fun. The programme can then access paid websites such as premium
knowledge reference sources. This is especially significant for students at universities who
need to undertake research for their assignments. Furthermore, instead of spending money to
do their tasks, it can save them money. Moreover, it can shield youngsters from commercials
containing aspects of cruelty, such as crime. Youngsters are easily influenced by what they
see around them as well as what they see on their device screens. This puts them at a
significant danger of being more cruel. As a result, this programme is able to track everyone,
including youngsters, to ensure that they always stay within their boundaries and reduce the
occurrence of criminal cases owing to the influence of murder-related commercials.

4.1 ADVANTAGES OF CONCEPT

An app is a self-contained software package that allows users to perform specific

tasks on a mobile or desktop device. The purpose of developing an app is to help users to
perform their tasks specifically. Applications for desktop or laptop computers are sometimes
called desktop applications, while those for mobile devices are called mobile apps. Therefore,
developing an app can make people perform their task efficiently and helps them to save
time. Thus, our concept of app is developing a specific app that can block harmful contents
from popping in front of our screen. With the invention of this app it will make sure the
adolescent, specifically teenagers, can surf through the Internet safely. .

This application offers an effective ads blocker specifically for teenagers who are
surfing through the Internet. Nowadays, a lot of teenagers have been surfing through the
Internet and we can see that there are a lot of unwanted advertisements that keep popping up
every time we click through a website. These unwanted ads that we have mentioned could
bring a very bad influence towards the teenagers because they are still underaged and most of

them are surfing through the Internet without parental supervision. This unwanted
advertisement may contain inappropriate elements such as abuse, harassment, and sexual
related content. If we do not prevent them from seeing such stuff like that, they are going to
be influenced by it and it will cause adverse consequences for the younger generation.
Therefore, we have come up with a solution that will solve this problem with a special
application that can be downloaded freely on laptop and phone. This application surely will
bring a lot of advantages towards the teenagers so that they can surf through the Internet safe
and sound. With this app, parents also do not have to be worried about their children surfing
through the Internet because all the unwanted elements will be blocked from popping in front
of their children's screen.

First and foremost, this application will make sure that it will block pop-ups. As we
have been experiencing before Pop-ups come in many shapes and sizes such as autoplay
videos that follow you around your screen, cookie notifications, and newsletter pop-ups.
When pop-ups ads have been blocked, it can reduce and improve our loading page times. It
can also prevent us from seeing the stuff that we are not supposed to see. As we have
mentioned above, this application was made specifically for teenagers because they are still
young and easily influenced if we do not take control over them. Therefore, preventing them
from seeing such harmful advertisements will surely bring advantage.

Apart from that, the use of this ‘iFocus’ application will help to spread awareness by
using one of its features which is a pop up campaign. As we all know, the Internet is a very
dangerous platform when we are not using it smartly. Therefore, by introducing this kind of
feature it will constantly remind the teenagers to use the Internet the proper way. By using
this feature the teenagers will not be influenced to use the Internet inappropriately for bad
purposes. They are going to learn how to effectively use the Internet to help with their study
and other learning purposes. For example,the teenagers who see this pop up campaign will
finally realise how important is the Internet and what are the consequences if it is used in a
wrong way.

Finally, the advantage of this app is it can prevent any violence or irrelevant content
from appearing on the screen. Sometimes there are some negative contents that have been
posted intentionally by someone we know and it will appear in our feed when we scroll
through social media. Some of this bad content can also appear when there is someone paying
the social media to put their ads to promote their activity. These irrelevant content may

include online gambling activities, money laundering and indecent images that are sexually
related. Hence, by introducing the hidden setting in our app it can safely prevent the
teenagers from seeing such a thing like that so they will never be influenced by it. What can
be concluded is that teenagers will never be motivated to do the irrelevant stuff if they do not
see it at an early stage.

The creation of this application can provide convenience and comfortable space for
teenagers to surf through the Internet. Beside that, this app will also help the parents to
control their children when they are using the Internet. Hence, this app will bring a lot of
advantages to the younger generation when they are surfing the Internet.

5.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, social media has become an integral part of our lives, but it can have
negative consequences, especially for teenagers. Unwanted pop-up ads expose them to
harmful content and potential security risks. To address this issue, we propose the
development of the 'iFocus' application. 'iFocus' is designed to ensure the safety of social
media users, with a focus on teenagers. It includes features like an ad blocker to eliminate
distracting and inappropriate advertisements, a pop-up campaign to educate teens on
responsible social media use, and a hidden setting to filter out violent content. By providing a
safer and healthier online environment, 'iFocus' aims to protect teenagers from the negative
effects of social media.

Briefly, This application not only enhances the online experience for teenagers but
also helps parents in monitoring their children's internet usage. By blocking unwanted ads
and safeguarding personal information, 'iFocus' provides a convenient and secure space for
teenagers to navigate the online world.

Additionally, the development of the 'iFocus' application is crucial in addressing the

challenges posed by social media. By taking action and implementing effective solutions, we
can create a safer digital environment for teenagers, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of
social media without the harmful consequences.
