BGM101 - June 2022

Assignment Part 1: Design Document

Due date: 16 July 2022 by 2:00 pm

Release date: 20 June 2022
Value: 20%
Assignment type: Groups of 2 students

A. Rationale

The assignment assesses the following learning outcomes:

 CLO1: explain multimedia elements and theory of semiotics;
 CLO3: produce the required documentation for planning, testing and evaluation of an
interactive multimedia application.

B. Instructions

You are required to create an interactive multimedia application that will teach the user
something about Balinese culture and traditions. As a team, discuss what aspect of Balinese
culture you would like to focus on. It may be a dance, music, or a traditional story or any
other aspect. You are expected to implement the application as a game. For part 1 of your
assignment, you are required to develop the Design Specifications that contain the following
sections:

Section 1: Introduction [Group Task]

In this section, provide an introduction to the multimedia project. Discuss the

- Title of the project

- Objectives of the project
- Advantages of using multimedia for this project

You may provide references to sources to support your discussion. Use APA referencing (7th
edition) and refer to the Academic Integrity Policy.
Section 2: User Analysis [Group Task]

In this section, you should discuss the following:

- User persona: a description of the characteristics of the intended users of the
application;
- Choice of modalities : what type of inputs/outputs are suitable for the intended users;
- User’s expectations: what the user expects to achieve from using the application and
how this will align with the use of multimedia.

Section 3: Project Design Document [Group Task]

Discuss as a team and complete the project design document in Appendix A. This design
document will highlight the functional requirements of the application. Based on your project
design document, divide the tasks for items 3 (Sound and Effects), 4 (Gameplay Mechanics),
5 (User Interface) and 6 (Other Features) between the two team members.

Section 4: Storyboard [Individual Work]

Each team member must produce the storyboards for their respective parts. The storyboard
should visualize the sequence for your planned interactive multimedia application. Each
storyboard must contain information about the scene name, scene description, visual design,
and description of multimedia elements (text, graphics, videos, audio, and animations).

Each student must use the storyboard template provided in Appendix B, and produce at least
THREE (3) storyboards.

Section 5: Multimedia Assets [Individual Work]

Based on the multimedia elements described in your storyboards, each student is required to
provide details about the planned or selected assets and complete the table in Appendix C.
You must provide information about:

- Name of the asset

- The type of asset (audio/video/image/animation/etc)
- Description of the asset – explain what the asset is, for example “an animated ball that
bounces up and down”
- Source of the asset – whether you will create it yourself or where you will obtain it
and the copyright on the asset
- Semiotic Analysis – discussion on the signs, symbols and meanings of this asset, and
the reason it is suitable for the scene.
