Title
“What type of lunch is preferred by the fourth form year group of the
St. Hildas Diocesan High School?”
4
Introduction
This School Based Assessment is focused on the title “what type of lunch is preferred by the
fourth form year group of the St. Hildas Diocesan High School?” It is observed that during
the period of lunch some items are being purchased more than others, this is due to the
students’ preferences in the different meals which are made available by the school. The
School however cannot provide the various food in the quantities it is needed and as such
students are sometimes very unsatisfied with the meal they alternately have to choose
because it was not the meal which they intended to purchase. By conducting this school based
assessment it will provide the information as to which meals the school should have a surplus
in for a particular year group, as to maximize the school’s profit, also to identify how the
students’ rate the quality of the food they purchase and if the students’ are satisfied with the
quantity of food they receive for lunch.
The researcher has decided to conduct a survey of 50 students with 10 pupils taken from each
of the 5 classes in the fourth form year group. The School Based Assessment will contain a
full discussion and evaluation of the title and will also give the viewer an overall analysis of
the chosen topic.
5
Method of Data Collection
The researcher chose to collect the necessary data through the means of using a
questionnaire, which is a set of questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purpose of
a survey or statistical study. The questionnaire contains 15 suitable questions and would
allow the survey to be carried efficiently and the targeted amount of persons to be reached
easily along with the fact that a questionnaire would provide quantifiable answers by each
participant towards the topic. The survey contained 50 participants, all of whom are fourth
form students. The data was collected and recorded through online sources namely email and
Whatsapp as it was not possible to see each of the 50 participants in person.

Analysis of Data (Question 15)
10
The data collected from question 13 in relation to the questionnaire has shown some
considerable results after being recorded. All 50 participants have their lunch daily and each
person has their preferred meal, approximately 5 from the 50 students prefer to have pizza for
lunch which is (5/50 x 100= 10%), 11 students prefer Patties which is (11/50 x 100 = 22%),
26 students prefer Chicken Meals (whether fried or baked) with fries or rice, this is
approximately (26/50 x 100= 52%) of the 50 students and the remaining 8 students preferred
their home cooked meals which is (8/50 x 100 = 16%).
Discussion of Findings
11
The data has revealed that the most preferred meal is the meal consisting of either
fries or rice with Fry/baked chicken, since it was chosen by 26 students, and the least
preferred choice for lunch is pizza since it was chosen by 5 students, while home cooked
meals and patties are averagely preferred.
It is of the researcher’s opinion that the students have chosen their preferred meal due
to two factors: Availability and the Time which the students receive their lunch. In relation
to question 12 on the questionnaire ,31 of the 50 participants said it took 20-30 minutes to
receive their meal, it is observed that the students are more patient in waiting for the fried
chicken than for the pizza to arrive because it is often cold.
In relation to question 9, 42 of the 50 participants said they are often unable to receive
their desired meal due to lack of availability, the fried chicken lunches are made and are
quickly finished hence some students do not get to purchase any until more is made, however
the pizza since it is purchased from off-campus it takes a lengthy time to arrive at the school
and as such when the students wish to purchase it has not yet arrived , when it is there for
purchase, the type which the student wants is not available and the pizzas are not sold.
Taste is always a factor to consider when talking about food but it is not a major
factor to discuss as 25 students said the lunches were good and 15 said they were satisfactory
and 2 students said they were outstanding, the remaining 8 of the 50 students do not purchase
lunch at school. There is also the cost but it is not very important as most of the students were
willing to pay $350-$500 dollars on their lunch as asked in question 8 and since pizza costs
$200 dollars and the fried chicken costs $300, there is not a major difference.
12
Conclusion
The entire fourth form year group can be estimated to have 200 students and since
each of the 50 participants represents 4 students in the year group and 26x4=104 and 5x4=20
then it can be concluded that the most preferred meal for lunch is fries or rice with Fry/baked
chicken and as such the school should begin to have a surplus in the supplies needed to create
this meal and cut down of the amount of pizza they purchased, as they will make more profit
supplying the students with what they prefer.
