Alger 05 Task Performance 1 Prefinal-Exam

The thermocouple is well-suited for monitoring the temperature of 10 rooms because it can measure temperatures over a wide range, is durable enough to withstand rough handling, and provides accurate temperature readings. Specifically, thermocouples have a wide measurement range from -200°C to over 2000°C, can detect small temperature differences, and have a tight accuracy of ±1°C or ±0.75%. When the power output of an electric heater operating from a 440V, 60Hz AC supply is varied from its rated 3kW output, the calculations show the required values of VH and RC to produce the desired power levels of 1000W, 750W, 250W, and 100W.

05 Task Performance 1 - ARG / Prefinal Exam

1. Assuming you are tasked to create a system to check the temperature of

ten (10) rooms. Which devices (sensors and actuators) will you consider
using? Why?

❖ Checking the temperature of 10 rooms is quite a lot. So, to do that I

need a temperature sensor device that is used in wide range area
and the perfect devices for that is the thermocouple. The
Thermocouples are known for their versatility as temperature sensors
therefore this sensor is commonly used on a wide range of
applications from an industrial usage thermocouple to a regular
thermocouple found on utilities and regular appliances. That’s why
thermocouple could be the good option for the system.

2. Among the discussed specifications for sensors and actuators, choose at

least three (3) specifications that best describe the durability and
functionality of that system. Why?

❖ Three specification that best describe the durability and functionality

of that system are first is when comes to the Range. The
thermocouple range is generally can measure temperatures over
wide temperature ranges and strongly made and capable of
withstanding rough handling. Thermocouples have the widest
temperature range of all the temperature sensors from below -200oC
to well over 2000oC. Second one is the Sensitivity. The sensitivity of the
thermocouples responds directly to differences in temperature, they
are convenient to measure temperature gradients. However, the
wire is thermally conductive and in the case of gradients, or different
thermal levels between a surface and the air, it may transport heat
and form a thermal bridge, attenuating the temperature difference.
And last is the Accuracy. The Type T thermocouples have the tightest
accuracy of all the base metal thermocouples at ±1C or ±0.75%
whichever is greater.
II. An electric heater operates from a 440v, 60Hz Ac supply and produces 3kW of
heat with the included 𝑅𝐻 = 50Ω. Find 𝑉𝐻 and 𝑅𝑐 if the power produced by the heater is
1000W, 750W, 250W and 100W.

Step 1: Solve the following for the power produced at 1000W

𝑉𝐻
𝑃=
𝑅𝐻

𝑉𝐻 = √𝑃 × 𝑅𝐻

𝑉𝐻 = √1000𝑊 × 50Ω

𝑽𝑯 = 𝟐𝟐𝟑. 𝟔𝟏𝒗
𝑅𝐻
𝑉𝐻 = 𝑉
𝑅𝐻 + 𝑅𝐶
𝑉 × 𝑅𝐻
𝑅𝑐 = − 𝑅𝐻
𝑉𝐻
440𝑣 (50𝛺)
𝑅𝑐 = − 50𝛺
223.61𝑣
𝑹𝒄 = 𝟒𝟖. 𝟑𝟗

Step 2: Solve the following for the power produced at 750W.

𝑉𝐻 = √𝑃 × 𝑅𝐻

𝑉𝐻 = √750𝑊 × 50𝛺
𝑽𝑯 = 𝟏𝟗𝟑. 𝟔𝟓
𝑉 × 𝑅𝐻
𝑅𝐶 = − 𝑅𝐻
𝑉𝐻
440𝑣(50𝛺)
𝑅𝐶 = − 50𝛺
193.65
𝑹𝒄 = 𝟔𝟑. 𝟔𝟏𝜴
Step 3: Solve the following for the power produced at 250W.

𝑉𝐻 = √𝑃 × 𝑅𝐻

𝑉𝐻 = √250𝑊 × 50𝛺

𝑽𝑯 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟖𝟎𝒗
𝑉 × 𝑅𝐻
𝑅𝐶 = − 𝑅𝐻
𝑉𝐻
440𝑣(50𝛺)
𝑅𝐶 = − 50𝛺
111.80𝑣
𝑹𝒄 = 𝟏𝟒𝟔. 𝟕𝟖𝜴

Step 4: Solve the following for the power produced at 100W.

𝑉𝐻 = √𝑃 × 𝑅𝐻

𝑉𝐻 = √100𝑊 × 50𝛺

𝑽𝑯 = 𝟕𝟎. 𝟕𝟏𝒗
𝑉 × 𝑅𝐻
𝑅𝐶 = − 𝑅𝐻
𝑉𝐻
440𝑣(50𝛺)
𝑅𝐶 = − 50𝛺
70.71𝑣
𝑹𝒄 = 𝟐𝟔𝟏. 𝟏𝟑𝜴
