Problem 1 [20 pts]

Dave’s Sub Shop makes custom submarine sandwiches to order. They are analyzing the processes
at their shop. The general flow of the process is shown below. There is a separate person working
at each of the steps in the process.

Dave wants to figure out the following for a typical 8-hour work day.

1) What is the current maximum output of the process in a day? [4 pts]

control method. The accompanying table shows the results of several different samples of walk-in
coolers that were produced in the previous month.

Problem 3 [15 pts]

Large-scale integrated (LSI) circuit chips are made in one department of an electronics
firm. These chips are incorporated into analog devices that are then encased in epoxy. The yield
is not particularly good for LSI manufacture, so the AQL specified by that department is 0.15
while the LTPD acceptable by the assembly department is 0.40.

1) Develop a sampling plan that achieves a 5% Type I error and a 10% Type II error. The
corresponding sampling table is given below for your reference. [10 pts]

Problem 4 [20 pts]
A pottery manufacturer manufacturers four different types of dining room service sets: English,
Currier, Primrose, and Bluetail. Furthermore, Primrose can be made by two different methods.
Each dining service set uses clay, enamel, dry room, and kiln time, in quantities shown in the table
below. The rightmost column in the table shows the manufacturer’s resource availability for the
remainder of the week. Notice that Primrose can be made by two methods. Both methods use the
same amount of clay (10 lbs.) and dry time (6 hours). But the second method uses one pound of
enamel and occupies three more hours in the kiln.

The manufacturer is currently committed to making the same amount of Primrose using methods
1 and 2. Assume, for simplicity, that the numbers of sets of each type don’t have to be integers.

The following table is from the sensitivity report given by the Excel Solver. Based on this table,
answer the following questions.

4) Suppose that some of the workers of the Dry Room area are organizing a strike. If the strike
takes place the number of hours available in the Dry Room would decrease from its current
value to 20 hours. What is the maximum amount of money that the manufacturer is willing to
offer the workers of the Dry Room area to cancel the strike? [5 pts]

Dry room has a shadow price of O on allowable

decrease limit of 28
The decrease due to the strike to 20 is 25
Since this is within the range of the allowable decrease
manufacturer should not pay anything to cancel the strike

Problem 5 [20 pts]
The arrival process of customers to a service facility is Poisson with an average arrival rate of 4
customers per hour. The service facility has a single employee that serves the customers. This
person takes on average 10 minutes to serve one customer (assume this time is exponentially
distributed).
