What is a satellite? List out different bandwidth and it’s applications.
Satellite technology is developing fast, and the applications for satellite technology are increasing all
the time. Not only can satellites be used for radio communications, but they are also used for
astronomy, weather forecasting, broadcasting, mapping and many more applications.
With the variety of satellite frequency bands that can be used, designations have been developed so
that they can be referred to easily. The higher frequency bands typically give access to wider
bandwidths, but are also more susceptible to signal degradation due to ‘rain fade’ (the absorption of
radio signals by atmospheric rain, snow or ice).
Because of satellites’ increased use, number and size, congestion has become a serious issue in the
lower frequency bands. New technologies are being investigated so that higher bands can be used.

Following points describe satellite frequency bands with example of India's satellites and their uses
1)L-Band(1-2GHz)- Used for GPS and satellite mobile phones application used in IRNSS
2)S-Band(2-4GHz)- Weather radars, surface ship radars and communication satellites use this band
used in MOM, SARAL, IRNSS, chandrayan, INSAT.
3)C-Band(uplink 5.925-6.425 GHz; downlink 3.7-4.2 GHz )-A high frequency band, this could be
used in tropical rain regions, primary use is in communication satellites used in GSATs, RISAT,
chandrayan, ariane, INSAT.
4)X-Band(uplink 7.9- 8.4 GHz, downlink 7.25 – 7.75 GHz)- Used in radar applications by military to
check air traffic, maritime vessel control used in Chandrayan, RISAT.
5) K- band:
Ku-Band refers to the lower portion of the K-Band. The "u" comes from a German term referring to
"under" whereas the "a" in Ka- Band refers to "above" or the top part of K-Band. The middle portion of
m
K-Band is unusable.
co
• Ku-Band(uplink 14 GHz; downlink 10.9-12.75 GHz )- Used for direct broadcasting services used in
GSATs, INSAT.
S.
• Ka-Band(uplink 26.5-40GHz; downlink 18-20 GHZ )- Communication satellites for close up high
resolutions applications.
