My Leadership Style

A part of this course involves looking at you as a leader. Leaders and managers have
many key skills and abilities that are developed and learnt over time. There are many
tests and quizzes that you can take that will help assess your leadership style and your
ability to manage and lead, many of which can provide you some insight into your own
strengths and weaknesses.

The Task
For this activity, will you be completing two quizzes that will help assess your own
leadership style? The following quizzes allow you to learn your leadership style and
characteristics and how to build on your strengths. Completing them will give you some
insight into your own distinctive style. You will be completing a package that will consist
of the following items.

Steps:
1. You are to complete the two quizzes listed below. Once you complete each quiz,
save your results (take a screenshot and paste it below), since you will be
submitting it with this package.

What’s Your Leadership Style Quiz:

2. You are to write a reflection on whether you agree with the results of each quiz.
Your reflection should consist of the following for each quiz:
a. What leadership style do you have?
b. Do you agree with the results of the test? Explain your answer fully.Read
through each style listed in the quizzes. Do you think you have more of a
different style listed, explain why? Give proof.
c. Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful leader? Why or
why not? Describe your abilities, strengths and weaknesses.

Your reflection should be at least a half page in length for each quiz, 12 point
font, typed and double-spaced. Use the space below to complete this activity.
Quiz 1: The Idealist Quiz

What leadership style do you have? Explain in your own words from the results.
(5 marks)
My leadership style is referred to as “Coaching”. This style entails a method of

leadership where the leader actively works with their team while providing feedback,

assessing strengths and weaknesses, and acting as an overall encouraging figure.

Coaching-style leadership works best in small groups, as working with every member of

a team is not sustainable when overseeing large groups of people.

Do you agree with the results of the test? Explain your answer fully. Read through
each style listed in the quizzes. Do you think you have more of a different style
listed, explain why? Give proof. (10 marks)
I somewhat agree with my result because I thrive in situations where I work closely with

others, but struggle to give feedback in both big and small group scenarios. Due to this,

I believe I am more of an “Affiliative” leader. This type of leadership prioritizes

maintaining a comfortable and safe environment for employees and emphasizes loyalty

and high morale. The drawback is that affiliative leaders do not implement change

within their team, relying on an inherent sense of responsibility from their employees.

When I am tasked with taking on a leadership role, I try my best to avoid confrontation

and prefer to act as a positive motivating anchor for the team rather than an

authoritative figure. This lack of feedback from my end leads me to resolve any

performance issues myself before handing in the work. Overall,I believe adopting a

coaching style where I can at least provide feedback to small groups is the next step for

me.

Quiz 2: The Mind Tools Quiz

What leadership style do you have? Explain in your own words from the results.
(5 marks)
I have a democratic leadership style. This style entails a method of leadership where the

leader implements all final decisions while considering and applying team feedback for
an engaging workplace. This style of leadership works best in low-pressure situations,

where the time for growth, innovation, and communication is available. If not, tension

and conflict may occur as a result of urgent deadlines that require decisions to be made

regardless of team views and ideas.

Do you agree with the results of the test? Explain your answer fully. Read through
each style listed in the quizzes. Do you think you have more of a different style
listed, explain why? Give proof. (10 marks)
I believe that while I try to be democratic leader, I lack the authoritarian aspects

necessary to be considered one. In reality, I am a delegating, "Laissez Faire" kind of

leader. This style allows the team to do as they please, ensuring a comfortable and

open space. I struggle when communicating stern guidelines that must be met, resulting

in a “do as you please” environment regardless of my views. For example, when training

a new co worker on how to fold jeans at my job, although I saw she was folding

incorrectly I did not want to say anything and create any tension, instead just letting her

work until she got it right. Overall, I do not think my "Laissez Faire" style of leadership is

very effective and am skeptical that any workplace would be able to successfully

implement it.

Comparison

Make a comparison between the two quizzes. How were the results the same, how were
they different? Which quiz do you agree more with and why? (5 marks)
Although I do not think either quiz accurately represented the full extent of my leadership

capabilities, I found it interesting how both quizzes resulted in a middle-ground style of

leadership. For example, the “coaching” and “democratic” styles both require team cooperation,

communication, and a leader who isn’t afraid to take charge and implement authoritarian

guidelines when necessary. I found that the democratic leader provides consultations and

concrete feedback to employees, while a coach simply encourages better performance and

discusses weaknesses while providing a guiding hand during tasks. Specific to me, I agree with

the coaching result more because I generally do not provide individual nor group consultations

on how to improve, which is an important attribute of a democratic leader.

Do you think you have what it takes to be a successful leader? Why or why not?
Describe your abilities, strengths and weaknesses. (5 marks)
I do not think I have what it takes to be a successful leader. While I am hard working and task

oriented, I struggle when it comes to the communicative aspects of leadership. I am able to

work diligently in group scenarios where the work is divided and I solely have to do my share,

but when it comes to acting as the delegator I often get flustered and don’t know how to act.

That being said, because I am able to assess my strengths and weaknesses I believe that with

time and practice in those anxiety-inducing scenarios, I could become a great leader in the

future.
