Tutorial 4 – Projectiles
This week’s key concepts:
• Motion in 2 dimensions
• Projectile kinematic equations
• Time of flight and range
1. A ball is kicked across level ground and reaches a maximum height of 35.0 metres.
What was its time of flight? [Ans =5.35 s]
2. An arrow was fired across level ground with an initial velocity of 37.23 metres per
second at an angle of 46.0° above the horizontal. What was its maximum height?
[Ans = 36.59 m]
3. A model rocket was fired across level ground at an initial angle of 60.0 degrees above
the horizontal. During flight it reached a maximum height of 3235 metres. What was
initial speed of the rocket? [Ans = 291 m/s]
4. A golf ball was chipped across level ground with an initial speed of 20.32 metres per
second. The maximum height reached is 18.54 metres above its starting position.
Calculate the initial angle at which the ball was hit. [Ans = 69.7°]
5. A projectile was fired across level ground with an initial velocity of 27.0 metres per
second at an angle of 33.0 degrees above the horizontal. What was the time of flight
of this projectile? [Ans = 3.00 s]
6. A football was kicked across level ground with an initial velocity of 25.74 metres per
second at an angle of 48.0 degrees above the horizontal. How far did the ball travel
before hitting the ground? [Ans = 67 m]
7. A bullet was fired across level ground at an initial angle of 26.0 degrees above the
horizontal. During its flight, it reached a maximum height of 3915 metres. What was
the maximum range? [Ans = 32105 m]
8. A ball is thrown horizontally from the top of a tall building from a height of 48.0 m
above the ground at 18.0 m/s. How far from the building will it impact with the
ground? At what angle will the ball be travelling when it reaches the ground?
[Ans = 56.3 m, -59.6°]
