Research Questions, Review of Related Literature and Theoretical Lens

Introduction

This research investigates the benefits of libraries in junior high school at Holy

Cross College of Sasa. According to Oxford Dictionary, a library is a building, room,

or organization with a collection of books, documents, music, and sometimes things

such as tools or artwork, for people to borrow, usually without payment. A library can

be found in any country, especially in schools. The main goal of a library is to help

the students appreciate literature academically or just for their entertainment.

Students can be better because libraries can, first, contribute to the student's

intellect; libraries can help students boost their intelligence by the means of reading

any literature. Second, libraries can help students with personality development. It

promotes curiosity, innovation, and critical thinking. It endorses desirable study

habits in students. It gives a student and tutors the opportunity for one-on-one

interaction and open conversation. Additionally, it allows for study groups to find a

place to meet up and study complex material. Over time, this quiet and relaxing

environment can help students with their overall grades and improve their self-

studying skills. (“The Importance of a School Library for Students”, 2023)

While many students visit to read in a library, there are even more students

who do not. Those students who do not read in a library tend to lose stock

knowledge, lose creativity, and cannot enhance their skills because they lack time to

read additional knowledge of their skills.

This study aims to find out the benefits of a library to students. This research aims to

help improve the student's academic achievement, enhance their skills and

creativity, and lastly, to provide stock knowledge for the students. School library

encourages curiosity, innovation and problem-solving. It is integral to the cultural and

social life of the school. The school library is a central point for all kinds of reading,

cultural activities, access to information, knowledge building, deep thinking and lively

discussion. Research shows the significant difference well-resourced libraries can

make to student learning outcomes. library’s collections, services and environment

are all designed to help your school meet its targets and goals for raising student

achievement. Record your vision and principles for managing your library in your

school's library guiding documents. (“Purpose of a School Library”, nd). When you go

to the library, you change your setting. This can get your creative juices flowing. In

addition, the resources at the library can spur creativity as you delve into the works

of others, flip through magazines, or peruse collections of artworks. Creativity is

necessary for many college projects, so tap the resources available at the library. No

school project is complete without research, and the library teaches students how to

research well. Librarians can help students find resources to fit their project, and they

can even walk students through citing those sources once they find them. At Post

University, library services include individual and group instruction in basic and

advanced library research techniques. The library provides a safe space to learn this

powerful skill. (“9 Benefits of Libraries for College Students”, 2022).

Reading is perhaps one of the most important habits that kids can acquire,

and a library at an international school affords them ample opportunities to do that.

International schools have state-of-the-art libraries that have an extensive collection

of books ranging from child literature to encyclopaedias and subject books. As is

rightly said by Margaret Fuller “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” The more a child

is encouraged to read, the more will he be able to build a stronger road towards a

beautiful and successful future. State of the art libraries in an international school

has books on class subjects. These extra books provide kids with more knowledge

than they are imparted in a formal class. Hence their concepts become clearer, and

they gain a competitive advantage over their fellow classmates (“Benefits of Library

in International School”, 2022).

School library is considered one of the tools to maintain academic excellence

(Oluwunmi, Durodola, & Ajayi, 2016). As a source of academic and research

information (Atienza, 2003), the library determines the capability of an institution to

provide a rich culture of teaching and learning. It provides students the opportunity to

learn how to learn independently by bridging classroom teaching to active learning;

while it serves as a significant curricular resource for teachers to improve

instructional practices that mediate quality learning outcomes. However, in the

twenty-first century where artificial intelligence, accreditation, standardization, and

employment competition exist, school library must be competitive enough to meet

the demands of the time i. e. to support the fast-changing radical academic needs of

its clienteles (Dagdag and Galiza, 2022). On a report published by the National

Library of the Philippines in 2019, it is reported that majority of the public libraries in

the country are found in the municipalities (50%), barangays (21%), cities (19%) and

provinces (9%). However, the actual total numbers of public libraries in the

Philippines only make up 3% of the ideal as prescribed by the law. The inadequate

funds for public libraries have also been noted. Even if funds were forthcoming the

National Library and the local authorities would have difficulties in increasing the

book stock for public libraries. The similar report also noted the lack of staff and
personnel that will supposedly man these libraries. Support from authorities are also

minimal. The lack of local authority support for the public libraries is manifested in

the appalling condition of many of the libraries - poor locations, old furniture, leaking

roofs, worn-out and outdated books - were some of the glaring signs. With these

poor library conditions especially in the local areas, people’s awareness of the

libraries also become quite low. Only 11% of Filipinos aged 18 and up borrowed

books from libraries, said Dr Dennis Mapa, Dean of the University of the Philippines'

School of Statistics. According to Mapa, library awareness was particularly poor at

the barangay level, with only 12% of respondents saying they were aware of a library

in their area. (Angelika N. Buergo,2021)

At the first-year level, the curriculum is designed for students to discover the

fundamental knowledge of the students at this level will be able to appreciate and

widen their perception of the library. It is also at this level that the students begin to

internalize and differentiate the functions of various types of libraries; ready to apply

the acquisition and collection development processes and policies for the library;

value the essential characteristics of reference service to assist, advise and instruct

users in the use of primary sources and be able to practice the use of basic

information technology tools in the various library functions. In enhancing their

personal competencies, it is at this level that the students develop a commitment to

personal growth and lifelong learning, act according to the fundamental values and

ethics of library services and communicate effectively using various methods. At the

second-year level, the students will be able to organize information resources and

archives. The students at this level will be able to catalogue, abstract, index, and

digitize information resources. At this level, the students can demonstrate knowledge

on preservation and conservation issues, including the requirements for archival

preservation and proper handling of materials. The students also know how to

design and implement library services to meet the needs and interests of children in

the community, select and apply current and emerging information tools, and create

information access and delivery solutions. The curriculum design for the third-year

level allows the students to manage information organization and connect through

linkages/partnerships. The students at this level will be able to envision strategic

direction of the library in support of the programs of the institution to which it is

attached; establish effective financial management processes and services using

sound business and financial judgment; employs sound project management

principles and procedures in the planning and implementation of projects,

programs and researches; build compelling and harmonious work relationships

toward the professional and personal growth of the people working in the

organization; communicate the value of the library and makes support to

promote its information resources and services through various media and/or

multilevel marketing; forge linkages/partnership within and outside the

organization to optimize use of library resources, promote library cooperation

initiatives and to ensure conformity with regulatory standards, laws and other policies

affecting libraries; formulate plans and policies for optimum use of facilities and

equipment; develop, design, implement and assess the library’s information

literacy program; develop and implement training programs to educate the library

users on the use of the library and its resources; and widen and strengthen their

involvement in activities geared towards promoting cultural heritage and

services. (University of Mindanao 2020)

Purpose of the study

For the students:If they read this study they will encourage and to know what the

perception of some students about the services of the library are. In that they will

visit the library and encouraging their self to learn more things inside in the library.

And they will know how to response properly to the services of library if they are the

one of future participants

For the parents: This study will help the parents because not only will the study

inform them of the benefits of the library services, but they also have the chance to

encourage their children to continue visiting or to visit the library. Another is it will

also be of help to parents because they will know what the grade 10 students’

perception on the library services are, this will inform them and give them knowledge

on the library services.

For the teachers: This study is very helpful and useful for them because if they read

this research, they well get idea or information about the perception of the students

about the services in library. The teachers have power to convince his/her student to

visit the library to read. To improve their reading comprehension, improve their

writing skills and they will learn some more things in library to improve their

academic endeavours.

For the future researchers: This study would be better if the students could

understand the reason why we did this study, it is because it's for them and to the

future students in this school to know and to expand their knowledge on the things

that should be paid attention to, Not only do are libraries important for students as

they learn the ropes of college, but they also provide important support for student
success. By learning to use the library well, students will be able to create successful

projects and complete their coursework with greater effectiveness.

Research objectives

1. To determine the services offered in the library.

2. To determine the perception of grade 10 students on the library services offered in

school.

Research question

1. What are the services that the library offers?

2. What are the school library services that fit on the needs of the students?
Review of Related Literature

This section studies and reviews the related literature about the Grade 1

Perceptions

Perception is a directly response from the specific absorption or the process

of a person to know a few things through her or his senses (Great dictionary of

Indonesian Language, 2008). According to Devito (2011), perception is the process

by which one becomes aware of against the stimulus that affects the senses

someone mentioned. Perception influence the stimulation (stimulus) or a message is

absorbed by a person and the meaning of what someone gave to others while others

reach consciousness. Rakhmat (2007) defines that perception is an experience

about objects, events, or contacts gained from concluded information and interpret

the message.

Library Services

School library encourages curiosity, innovation and problem-solving. It is

integral to the cultural and social life of the school. The school library is a central

point for all kinds of reading, cultural activities, access to information, knowledge

building, deep thinking and lively discussion.

Research shows the significant difference well-resourced libraries can make

to student learning outcomes.

The school library provides information and ideas that are fundamental to

functioning successfully in today's information and knowledge-based society. The

school library equips students with lifelong learning skills and develops the

imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens

Your library’s collections, services and environment are all designed to help

your school meet its targets and goals for raising student achievement. ("Purpose of

the school library", nd)

Theoretical Lens

This study is anchored on the educational learning theories by Fairbanks

(2021). This explains that the library affects the education of the students. There are

two chosen theories involved.

Behaviourism. As Simply Psychology puts it: "Behaviourism is only concerned with

observable stimulus-response behaviours, as they can be studied in a systematic

and observable manner."

Cognitivism. Learning relies on both external factors (like information or data) and

the internal thought process.

CHAPTER II

METHODS

This chapter describes the research design, data source, ethical

considerations, role of the researcher, data collection, data analysis and

trustworthiness.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Qualitative research is a type of research that explores and provides deeper

insights into real-world problems. Instead of collecting numerical data points or

intervene or introduce treatments just like in quantitative research, qualitative

research helps generate hypotheses as well as further investigate and understand

quantitative data.

This is qualitative research because the researchers will describe the

experiences and analyse the benefits of the library for grade 10 students.

Participant’s Sampling

The data of this study is recorded using a survey from grade 10 students and

which are randomly sampled.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATION

Ethical considerations have been maintained throughout the study,

particularly during the survey and/or interview with respondents, to ensure that the

participants' rights are respected.

Social Value. Since the study is focused on the benefits of the library for grade 10

students, the outcome of this study is beneficial for students who visit the library

Informed Consent. The study is used informed consent since the respondents is

grade 10 students, the respondents have been told about the contents of the study

and ensure that the respondents understood exactly what the study is about and the

importance of his/her participation. Prior to data collection, respondents have been

asked if they are willing to take part in the interview.

Risk Benefits and Safety. Respondents were assured that there was no dangers

associated with their participation. Because all data were collected is open-ended

question and the information collected have been respected. Their participation gave

them the chance to share in the creation of relevant information, which will be the

benefit they will derive from the study.

Privacy and Confidentiality of information. Researchers adhered to the principles

of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality in the collection, retention,

and processing of personal information based on the data Privacy Act of 2012. The

privacy and confidentiality of the information collected have been respected. The

data gathered from in-depth survey interview will handled only by the researchers

and have appropriately disposed of when the study is completed to protect privacy.

The researchers respected the rights and private information of the participants.
Justice. In terms of fairness, the researcher ensured that the respondents are

identified in accordance with the study’s goal. As a form of compensation for their

participation, respondents have been acknowledged in the research as an

expression of appreciation because the researchers are still undergraduates and do

not have a budget for payment reimbursement.

Transparency. The researcher resolved any potential conflicts of interest that

develop throughout the study’s performance and ensured that any potential bias is

removed. If given the chance, the researchers welcome any opportunity to present

the study in the intentional research congress or any research forum. Furthermore,

the researchers will only publish correct information based on the study’s findings.

Qualification of Researcher. The proponents of the study are officially enrolled in

Practical Research 1 this second semester of school year 2022-2023, and therefore

given technical background in conducting research by their teacher. This makes

them qualified to undertake the research activity as part of the subject requirement.
ROLE OF THE RESEARCHER

The role of the researchers are the following: Describer, Translator,

Interviewer, Recorder

The role of researchers is to fill in the gaps and gather information about the

benefits of the library for grade 10 students. Each researcher has their own

responsibilities to fulfil to make the research successful. One of the responsibilities of

the researchers is to inform the students and spread awareness of the benefits of the

library. The role of the researcher is to make the students aware that libraries are a

crucial source of information for children in schools. It creates the essential habit of

reading students

It is the researchers’ responsibility to ensure that the participants’ rights and

privacy will be protected and kept safely.

TRUSTWORTHINESS OF THE STUDY

Trustworthiness is one-way researchers can persuade themselves and

readers that their research findings are worthy of attention (Lincoln & Guba, 1985).

The four criteria Lincoln and Guba (1985) suggested for assessing the reliability of

qualitative research are credibility, dependability, transferability, and confirmability. In

this study, the researchers make sure that trustworthiness is achieved.

Credibility. This study is credible because there are sources, references, a theory,

and someone who can prove it, and that is the participants in this study. In addition,

for credible and accurate data, the researchers used and presented related literature

and methods in the study.

Dependability. The researchers have been consistent in this research process and

have made sure to never be careless or make mistakes, especially in collecting the

data, interpreting it, and reporting the results.

Transferability. This study is transferable because the findings can be applicable to

similar situations, populations, or phenomena.

Confirmability. The researchers made sure to check and recheck the data and

information that had been gathered through the study. In addition, the researchers

applied proofreading.
