Social Media 

Social media is a term used to describe online communications (such as those found on social
networking and microblogging websites) where users can share information, opinions, private
messages, and other types of content (such as videos). 

A. History of Social Media in the Philippines 

PLDT- Before getting into social media’s start in the Philippines, let’s first explore when the
country connected with the international web. On March 29, 1994, Benjie Tan started the
Philippines’ first internet connection via a PLDT network center in Makati City.
 engages in providing telecommunication services in Philippines through its three
principal business groups, fixed line, wireless, and information and communication
technology

Friendster
 founded by Jonathan Abrams, a Canadian computer programmer, in March 2002.
 In 2002, Friendster was one of the first social media networking platforms to penetrate
and thrive in the country. The site’s main feature was its Testimonials section, known
locally as “testi.” It was a section of a user’s profile where users could leave comments
about the person, whether it be a lengthy essay describing how they met or how
appreciative they were of each other.
 Friendster’s main purpose was for everyone from around the world to interact and
socialize with their old friends and make new ones. 

Yahoo-  Yahoo! started at Stanford University. It was founded in January 1994 by Jerry Yang
and David Filo, who were Electrical Engineering graduate students when they created a website
named "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web".
B. Facts
 Philippines is the social media capital of the world, coming in first is China, India is third,
USA is fourth, lastly, Indonesia is fifth
 Filipinos rank globally as some of the most active internet users (Rank 2) china (rank 1) 
 Social media is the most used social media platform in the philippines. 
 97. 2% of users in the philippines prefer using mobile phone when accessing the social
media 
 51.4% of all users in the philippines follow celebrities and influencers

and factor of social media trends in the Philippines:
1.)The rise of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tiktok and their contribution to
marketing success. Ex adds Shoppe,Lazada and Beauty MNL. 
2.)Brand partnerships with influencer on social media ex. Shein, Real me , OOTWW.
3.) The rise of the one-minute video ex. Daily life,cooking season,Makeup tutorial and
Product advertisement.
Social media Applications that are widely used today:

1. Facebook (2.74 billion active users)    


 Facebook is a social media networking site that allows users to connect with
friends, family, co-workers and others, including groups of people who share
similar interests. Users can share pictures, videos, articles and opinions with their
friends.

2. YouTube (2.29 billion active users)  


 YouTube is a video sharing service where users can watch, like, share, comment
and upload their own videos. The video service can be accessed on PCs,
laptops, tablets and via mobile phones.
3. Facebook Messenger (1.3 Billion active users)    
 Facebook Messenger is a FREE mobile messaging app used for instant
messaging, sharing photos, videos, audio recordings and for group chats. The
app, which is free to download, can be used to communicate with your friends on
Facebook and with your phone contacts.

4. Instagram (1.22 Billion active users) 


 Instagram has a greater reach than any other social media platform. There are
over 1 billion monthly active users on Instagram, which is significantly more than
the other platforms. This means that you have a greater chance of reaching your
target audience.
 Instagram is a great way to increase brand awareness for your company. It’s a
visual platform that allows you to share your brand’s story and connect with
customers in a unique way. By using Instagram, you can reach a larger audience
and create a following for your brand. Furthermore, Instagram can help you build
trust and credibility with your customers.

5. Tiktok (1 Billion active users montly)


 In 2016 a Chinese company from ByteDance  launched an app called A. me
before they expanded outside the Chine and it was renamed Tiktok. It is similar
to some social media where some users can follow famous artists, friends,
trends, latest news, and online shopping.

6. Twitter (450 million active users) 


                                                                   
 Twitter is a social media platform that is known as a 'microblogging' system. It
allows you to send and receive short posts, which are known as "tweets". These
tweets can be up to 140 characters long and may also feature images or links to
websites and resources. In addition, Twitter users can follow other users to see
their tweets in your customised feed.
 Twitter's primary purpose is to connect its users and allow them to share their
thoughts with their followers and others through the use of hashtags. It can be a
source of news, entertainment and a marketing tool for businesses.
