III SEMESTER B.Tech – ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY (ELE 2155)
Tutorial 1 + 2
̅ = (𝐴) 𝒂∅ , where A is a constant and 𝜌 is the radius of the cylinder.
1. Consider a vector 𝑯 𝜌
From the fundamental concepts, show the involved steps in transforming it to its equivalent in
spherical coordinate system.
̅ = 2𝒂𝒙 + 𝟔𝒂𝒚 − 𝟑𝒂𝒛 and 𝑩
2. Given 𝑨 ̅ = −𝟑𝒂𝒙 − 𝟒𝒂𝒚 − 5𝒂𝒛 , find
• A unit vector in the direction of (𝐀 ̅−𝐁 ̅)
• The magnitude of (𝐀 ̅+𝐁 ̅)
̅
(𝑨 ̅)
• | + 3𝑩 ⁄ ̅ ̅
̅ || . 𝑩
|𝑨 + 3𝑩
3. Identical 1𝜇𝐶 point charges are located in free space at (0,0,1) and (0,0, −1). Prepare a plot
depicting the variation of |𝑬| v/s ‘z’; along the line 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 2, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 |𝑧| ≤ 4. (Use the graph sheet
provided in the E-Pad)
4. Three equal positive charges of 4 × 10−9 𝐶 each are located at the three corners of a square of
side 20 𝑐𝑚. With the help of a neat sketch, determine the magnitude and direction of the electric
field at the vacant corner point of the square.
5. A sheet of charge having density of 2 𝑛𝐶/𝑚2 , is present at the plane 𝑥 = 3 in free space while a
lne charge of density 20𝑛𝐶/𝑚 is located at 𝑥 = 1, 𝑧 = 4. Determine:
a. The magnitude of electric field intensity at the origin
b. The direction vector of electric field intensity at 𝑷(4,5,6)
Additional problems (to be solved by students):
̅ = 3𝒂𝒙 + 4𝒂𝒚 + 𝒂𝒛 and 𝑩
1. Given vectors 𝑨 ̅ = 2𝒂𝒚 − 5𝒂𝒛 , determine the angle between 𝑨
̅ and 𝑩
̅
2. In free space, a point charge 𝑸𝟏 = 10 𝜇𝐶 is located at 𝑷𝟏 (1,2,3) while 𝑸𝟐 =
−5𝜇𝐶 is at 𝑷𝟐 (1,2,10). Determine:
a. The vector force exerted on 𝑸𝟐 by 𝑸𝟏
b. The coordinates of 𝑷𝟑 at which a point charge 𝑸𝟑 experiences no force
3. Eight 25 𝑛𝐶 point charges in free space are located symmetrically on a circle of radius 0.2 𝑚
centered at the origin in 𝑧 = 0 plane. Determine:
a. The point on 𝑧 axis when the magnitude of electric field intensity is maximum
b. The maximum magnitude of the electric field intensity.
