Research about the theory of Atkinson and Shiffrin. Briefly and concisely, explain what it is and give an illustration through a short example.
Information processing theory is an approach to cognitive development studies that aims to
explain how information is encoded into memory. It is based on the idea that humans do not merely respond to stimuli from the environment. Instead, humans process the information they receive. Every day we are exposed to thousands of stimuli. Our brain takes information through sight, sound, smell, and touch. This information is then transferred to the sensory memory, only when we pay particular attention to a particular sense. It is then transferred from our sensory memory to our short-term memory, which contains information about what we see and hear in this present moment in time. It has a very limited storage capacity and cannot permanently hold information. Our long-term memory is exactly the opposite. It is large and permanently stores information. The process of getting information from our short to our long-term memory is called encoding. It is when you create a connected between the memories you already have, and the new memories received. The process of getting memories out of your long-term memory for use is called retrieval. When our short-term memory experiences many senses it can become overwhelmed, when this happens, we use a process called selective attention. This filters out the messages that are not important to us allowing us to focus on those that are. Finally, when our senses receive a message, a search happens to determine what the response to the message will be and then feedback is hen received through observation to check if the response was effective, then it will be stored in our long-term memory for future use. Teacher Jesse heard Kirsten, the mother of one of her student singing “Ili-ili”. She suddenly felt emotional since she remembered her late mother singing this song when she was young. In the given example, our stimuli is the song called “Ili-ili”. It will be pick up by our echoic memory and then transfer to sensory memory and then pass to our short-term memory. Now the encoding process will take place, it is when you create a connected between the memories you already have, and the new memories received.
