Worksheet 2

This document contains 8 problems related to solvent extraction calculations. The problems involve calculating distribution ratios, percentage extractions, and amounts of solute extracted or unextracted given various parameters like initial amounts of solute and volumes of aqueous and organic phases, and the percentage of solute extracted between the two phases.

1] 96% of a solute is removed from 100 ml of aq solution by extraction with two 50 ml portions of
organic solvent. What is the distribution ratio of the solute in favour of organic solvent?

2] When 0.5 dm3 of an aq solution was extracted twice with 0.2dm3 of an organic solvent, 99% of solute
was extracted. Calculate the value of distribution ratio in favour of organic phase.
3] The % extraction in a certain process of extraction is 80. Calculate the distribution ratio of the solute
between organic solvent & H2O if vol. ratio (V0/Vw) = 4

4] 100 cm3 of an aq solution containing 0.2g of a solute was shaken with 50 cm3 of organic solvent. If
the distribution ratio D0/w = 120. Calculate the amount of solute unextracted & % extraction.
5] 90% of the metal chelate is extracted when equal volumes of aq & organic phases are used. What will
be the % extraction if the vol of the organic phase is doubled.

6] The distribution ratio D is 10 in favour of organic solvent for a certain system. Calculate % extraction
ratio for a volume ratio (V0/Vw) of i) is one ii) 9 for a single extraction.
7] 25 cm3 of an aq solution of 0.1M butric acid is shaken with 10 cm3 ether. After equilibrium is
attained, the aq layer contained 0.5 millimole butyric acid. Calculate the D & & % E.

8] In solvent extraction of some inorganic complex in chloroform, the vol. ration (V 0/Vw) =5. Calculate
the distribution ratio of the complex between chloroform and water, if the % extraction is 90 in single
extraction.
