DMM-II Unit Test V: Bearings & Lubrication

This document is a past year unit test from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The test has two parts: Part A contains 10 multiple choice questions worth 1 mark each about topics like lubrication types, bearing materials, thin film bearings, and properties of lubricants and bearings. Part B contains 3 answer questions worth 5 marks each, asking students to explain terms related to journal bearings, calculate cooling required for a bearing, and provide a short note on classifications of antifriction bearings. The test aims to increase the pass percentage from the previous year's 92% to a target of 93% for the present year.

Explain the following terms as applied to journal bearings :(a)
2 a) Bearing characteristic number ; and (b) Bearing modulus. 5M CO5 BL4

A tentative design of a journal bearing results in a diameter of 75 mm

and a length of 125 mm for supporting a load of 20 kN. The shaft runs
at 1000 r.p.m. The bearing surface temperature is not to exceed 75°C
3 a) 5M CO5 BL3
in a room temperature of 35°C. The oil used has an absolute viscosity
of 0.01 kg/m-s at the operating temperature. Determine the amount of
artificial cooling required in watts. Assume d/c = 1000.

Write short note on classifications and different types of antifriction
