Effects of Imperialism - India

Who Imperialized them?
The British had taken control of India in Currency used by the East India Company.
1763, after finishing off the French in the
Seven Year War (1756-1763). The British
then took control of India through the British
East India Company, in which it ruled with an
iron hand.

Then, in 1857 an Indian protest, led by native


soldier group called Sepoys, incited an
uprising known as the Sepoy Mutiny.
What were the British’s motives?
British saw India as a source
and well of raw materials that
would be useful to fuel the
factories that reside in England.

At the time, the economy of


India was largely centered
around agriculture, which
would then be sent and shipped
out to England. The most
common of there fruitful labor
included:

● Jute ● Coffee
● Cotton ● Wheat
● Sugar The Delhi durbar, 1903, held to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII and
● Tea Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India.
How did they imperialize them? What were their
Methods?
The British’s way of taking over India’s
Economy and Trade was by taking
control of the British East India
Company which was formed by both,
East / South-east Asia and India.
Which had a fair amount of power and
influence over the economy.

Later on, they assumed even more


power by:
● Recruiting indians and imposing
English Education onto them. Which
would later become politics to win

becoming the superpower when
it comes to trade and natural

The British restricted
Indian industries, such as
textiles. An emphasis on
cash crops resulted in the
loss of self-sufficiency for
many villagers. The
conversion to cash crops
reduced food production,
which caused famines.

Mahatma Gandhi was an
Indian lawyer, who also
served a great importance to
the Independence of India.
He believed in a nonviolent
resistance which had lead to
the success of the campaign
for India’s independence
from British rule.
