Tutorial 4: Factorial Deigns
1. An engineer suspects that the surface finish of a metal part is influenced by the feed rate and
the depth of cut. He selects three feed rates and four depth of cut. He then conducts a factorial
experiment and obtains the following data:
Feed Rate Depth of Cut (in)
(in/min) 0.15 0.18 0.20 0.25
74 79 82 99
0.20 64 68 88 104
60 73 92 96
92 98 99 104
0.25 86 104 108 110
88 88 95 99
99 104 108 114
0.30 98 99 110 111
102 95 99 107
(a) Analyze the data and draw conclusions. Use α = 0.05.
(b) Prepare appropriate residual plots and comment on the model’s adequacy.
2. In an agriculture experiment with two types of fertilizers (P & Q), two types of land (X & Y), two
periods of irrigation (1&2) and two replicates in each experimental combination are conducted.
The corresponding yields in standard bags of a crop per acre are shown below:
Land Type
X Y
Period of Irrigation Period of Irrigation
1 2 1 2
30 35 25 40
P
45 24 30 45
Fertilizer Type
40 22 36 38
Q
32 37 27 29
Write the relevant model and perform ANOVA (α = 0.05).
3. The yield of a chemical process is being studied. The two factors of interest are temperature and
pressure. Three levels of each factor are selected; however, only nine runs can be made in one
day. The experimenter runs a complete replicate of the design on each day. The data are shown
in the following table. Analyze the data, assuming that the days are blocks.
Day 1 Pressure Day 2 Pressure
Temperatur 250 260 270 250 260 270

4. Use contract method to estimate factor effects and perform ANOVA at α = 0.05 for problem 2.
5. An engineer is interested in the effects of cutting speed (A), tool geometry (B), and cutting angle
(C) on the life (in hours) of a machine tool. Two level of each factor are chosen, and three
replicates of a 23 factorial design are run. The results are as follows
Treatment Replicate
A B C Combination I II III
- - - (1) 22 31 25
+ - - a 32 43 29
- + - b 35 34 50
+ + - ab 55 47 46
- - + c 44 45 38
+ - + ac 40 37 36
- + + bc 60 50 54
+ + + abc 39 41 47
Determine factor effects and perform ANOVA for significance of 0.05.
