Tutorial Week 3 Phy210 Static Equilibrium

1. The document provides examples of static equilibrium involving rigid objects like beams, bridges, seesaws and hanging signs. Forces, tensions and reactions are calculated for each example. 2. Ten examples are given involving calculation of tensions, reaction forces, locations of pivots or centers of mass that maintain static equilibrium. Free body diagrams are drawn and calculations made. 3. Quantities calculated include tensions in cables, normal reaction forces at supports, locations of pivots, and vertical and horizontal forces on bodies in static equilibrium.

TUTORIAL WEEK 3 PHY210

STATIC EQUILIBRIUM

EXAMPLES OF RIGID OBJECTS IN STATIC EQUILIBRIUM

1. Find the sum of all the torques at point D in Figure below

(-500 Nm)

2. Suppose the tension in both of the cables is measured to be 50 N and that the angle
that each cable makes with the horizontal is known to be 30 degrees. What is the
weight of the sign?

(25 N)

3. A uniform beam of length, L =1.0 m and mass, m = 5.0 kg is balanced on a pivot point,
placed directly beneath the center of the beam. Body 1 with mass m1 = 2 kg with
distance 0.2 m to the right of the pivot point, and a second body 2 with m2 = 3 kg with
distance m to the left of the pivot point, such that the beam neither translates nor
rotates.
a) Find force Fpivot that the pivot exerts on the beam
b) Find the location of pivot point that maintains static equilibrium
(49.05 N, 0.13 m)

4. A car is parked on a bridge as shown in figure below. The car weighs 1000 kg which
is acting through its center of gravity (CG). The bridge weighs 500 kg, which is
uniformly distributed. Assume the bridge is rigid. Find the reaction forces at the
supports of the bridge at the two ends.

(9319.5 N, 5395.5 N)
5. A 0.75 kg bird stands on a uniform 1.0 kg stick as shown in figure below. The stick is
attached to a wall with a hinge and to the ceiling with a rope of negligible mass. Find
is the tension in the rope.

(1.042 N)
6. A 70 kg man is horizontal in a push-up position as in figure below. Find the vertical
forces acting on his hands and his feet.

(Fhand =686.7 N, Ffeet = 343.35 N)

7. Figure below shows a boy and his cat sit on a seesaw. The cat has a mass of 4 kg and
sits 2 m from the center of rotation. If the boy has a mass of 50 kg, where should he
sit so that the see-saw will balance?

(0.16 m)

8. A rod with a length of 2.0 m and weight of 60 N is supported by two pivots at point A
and B as seen in Figure 2. Find the normal reaction force, FA, and FB if a block weighing
40 N was placed on top of the rod at 0.4 m from point A.

(FA = 62 N, FB = 38 N)
9. As seen in figure below, a 65 kg male is in a horizontal, one push-up posture. If point
C is centre of mass of the body,
a) Sketch the free body diagram for all forces acting to the body
b) Calculate the vertical force acting on his hands

(446.4 N)
10. The sign below hangs outside the physics classroom, advertising the most important
truth to be found inside. The sign is supported by a diagonal cable and a rigid horizontal
bar. If the sign has a mass of 50 kg, then determine the tension in the diagonal cable
that supports its weight

(980 N)
