Mahogany Tree
According to an article by Forest Generation (2020), Mahogany is a majestic, beautiful
tree that symbolizes strength. Mahogany is said to have strong protective qualities and is
known for its ability to withstand even lightning strikes. It is known as a hard wood; mahogany
is a fast-growing forest trees commonly made into furniture or used in construction materials.
More importantly, mahoganies effectively prevent soil erosion and flood hence these are often
planted along riverbanks (Daray, 2011).
Swietenia macrophylla. Stated in an article by idtools.org (2020), Switenia
macrophylla, commonly known as mahogany, is a species of plant in the Meliacaeae family. It
is one of three species that yields genuine mahogany timber (Swietenia), the other being
Swietenia mahogany and Swietenia humilis. It is native to South Amera, Mexico and Central
America, but naturalized in the Philippines, Singapore and Hawaii and cultivated in plantations
and windbreaks elsewhere. Swietenia macrophylla is an evergreen tree native to tropical
America, Mexico, and South America. The trees regenerate naturally through seeds in their
native countries and grow luxuriantly under favorable conditions. The plant is well known for
its fast growth and adaptability (Dewanjee, 2011).
Mahogany Tree Fruit Husk
Stated in a research study by Marielle Piquero (2019), Mahogany is one of the resourceful
in our environment, especially the fruit. It can be used as alternative charcoal or fuel. Where
mahogany tree fruit husks can be used in the production of charcoal. Mahogany trees do not
bear flower but grow buds which develop into brown oblong fruit. The fruits fall when they
mature, and the dried one’s break spreading on the ground, where Mahogany Fruits are often
thrown away. What most people do not know is that the dried pulps are good substitute of
charcoal and firewood stated by (Felix Daray, 2011). According to Maregien Abrasaldo (2011),
Four dried pulps are enough to boil a liter of water, to have a good burning effect, the pulps
should be dried for one day. If used in clay stove, the pulps should be chopped into smaller
pieces, like charcoal.

Ash content. Ash content of coal is the non-combustible residue left after carbon,
oxygen, sulfur, and water has been driven off during combustion. The remaining residue or
ash is expressed as a percent of the original coal sample weight. The composition of final ash
differs from the inorganic constituents of the coal prior to incineration due to chemical changes
during combustion (SGS, 2013). Higher ash content coal burns slower resulting in reduction in
the steam output of a boiler and High ash content reduces the ability of a charcoal to absorb
gas and solution (Examrace, 2018). In line with a research study by Cruz et al. (2019) about
“MAHOGANY TREE (Swietenia macrophylla) FRUIT HUSKS AS AN ALTERNATIVE CHARCOAL”,
The ash content of Mahogany fruit husk charcoal with three replications has a total mean of
16.7%. It has a greater percentage in terms of ash content when compared to Commercial
wood charcoal which has 6.17% mean percentage from the three replications. Since Mahogany
fruit husk charcoal has a high mean percentage of ash content, it has less ability to absorb gas
and solution resulting to make it burn slower and prolong its efficiency.
Moisture Content. Stated in an article by the University of Kentucky (2018),
Moisture content is an important parameter in coal analysis. It is needed for determining the
calorific (heating) value and handling properties of coal. Moisture absorbs heat, so high
moisture content in coal reduces the relative efficiency of heating when a coal is combusted
where moisture adds weight to coal and contributes to spontaneous combustion. In line with
a research study by Cruz et al. (2019) about “MAHOGANY TREE (Swietenia macrophylla) FRUIT
HUSKS AS AN ALTERNATIVE CHARCOAL”, Mahogany fruit husk charcoal has a total mean
percentage of 18.42% in terms of moisture content while CWC has a total of 33.92%. Based
on the results, mahogany fruit husk charcoal absorbs lesser moisture than commercial wood
charcoal. Where it will take less amount of time to ignite or start a fire with mahogany fruit
husk charcoal than commercial wood charcoal due to the fact that high moisture content
reduces the relative efficiency of heating when a coal is combusted.
Carbon Content. According to Alan Scaroni (2017), Fixed carbon is the solid
combustible residue that remains after a coal particle is heated, and the volatile matter is
expelled. The fixed-carbon content of a coal is determined by subtracting the percentages of
moisture, volatile matter, and ash from a sample. Since gas-solid combustion reactions are
slower than gas-gas reactions, a high fixed-carbon content indicates that the coal will require
7
PATEROS CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Senior High School Department
S.Y. 2020 – 2021
a long combustion time. In line with a research study by Cruz et al. (2019) about “MAHOGANY
TREE (Swietenia macrophylla) FRUIT HUSKS AS AN ALTERNATIVE CHARCOAL”, Mahogany
fruit husk charcoal has a total mean percentage of 24.12% while Commercial wood charcoal
has a total of 33.92% in terms of carbon content. From the results, Mahogany fruit husk
charcoal will ignite faster than commercial wood charcoal since high fixed-carbon content
indicates that the coal will require combustion time.
Heat Duration. As stated by Marielle Piquero (2019), Heat duration is the total
time it takes for each group of charcoal to be totally burned down without any sign of fire
glow. In line with a research study by Cruz et al. (2019) about “MAHOGANY TREE
(Swietenia macrophylla) FRUIT HUSKS AS AN ALTERNATIVE CHARCOAL”, in his graph of
three trials between Mahogany fruit husks charcoal and Commercial wood charcoal, it
reveals that it takes a mean of 36.90 minutes of heat duration for the mahogany fruit husk
charcoal while it takes a mean of 30.94 minutes of heat duration using commercial wood
charcoal. These findings prove that mahogany fruit husk charcoal’s heat duration is longer
than that of the commercial wood charcoal supported by the high mean percentage of
mahogany fruit husk charcoal in terms of ash content, where it has less ability to absorb
gas and solution resulting to make it burn slower and prolong its efficiency.
Cassava Starch
As stated in an article by Integrated Cassava Project (2005), Starch is one of the most
abundant substances in nature, a renewable and almost unlimited resource. Starch is produced
from grain or root crops. It is mainly used as food, but is also readily converted chemically,
physically, and biologically into many useful products to date, starch is used to produce such
diverse products as food, paper, textiles, adhesives, beverages, confectionery,
pharmaceuticals, and building materials. Cassava starch has many remarkable characteristics,
including high paste viscosity, high paste clarity, and high freeze-thaw stability, high level of
purity, excellent thickening characteristics, which are advantageous to many industries.

Accelerants
Stated in an article by Mary McMahon (2021), An accelerant is any substance which speeds
a process, but most people use the term specifically to refer to substances which contribute to
the spread of fires. Fire accelerants include things like hydrocarbons, paper, plastics, and other
materials which can cause a fire to spread more quickly or burn more fiercely than it would
otherwise. When an accelerant is present at a fire site, it contributes significantly to the speed
at which the fire moves and how hot the fire burns. Without an accelerant, most fires burn at
relatively cool temperatures. Briquettes will need accelerants to burn faster, because there is
a difference in the structure of briquettes compared with that of lump charcoal due to
compaction. As a result, briquettes are not able to absorb sufficient oxygen for faster
combustion (Ngureco, 2019).

Sawdust
According to Ngureco (2019), A briquette is a block of compressed coal dust,
charcoal dust, sawdust, wood chips or biomass and is used as a fuel in stoves and boilers.
remember that un-carbonized sawdust will make your briquettes emit a lot of smoke. To
reduce the smoke from sawdust, partly ferment your sawdust for about five days by just letting
the sawdust stay in water for five days.
Calcium Carbonate
White ash color is very appealing in briquettes. It is like it stands for quality. When you
light your briquettes in a stove, you need to know when they are ready. This is done by
observing that the burning briquettes have turned white. You can only see the white ashes,
however, if your briquettes contain sufficient calcium carbonate, lime, or limestone. Whiting,
lime, limestone, or calcium carbonate have in the past been very cheap products where they
are not heat fuels, but they can lower the burning rate such that the briquettes burn for a
longer period but at a reduced fire (Ngureco, 2019).
Charcoal Briquettes
A briquette is a block of flammable matter used as fuel to start and maintain a fire.
Residues from agriculture and forestry e.g., bagasse, coffee husks, saw-dust, and coconut
husks are a valuable source of raw material and can be used for producing briquettes
(Energypedia, 2019). Stated in an article by World Agroforestry, Charcoal briquettes are made
by mixing charcoal dust with water and a binding agent such as soil, paper, or starch. The
resultant ‘dough’ is shaped by hand or molded in wooden or metal presses into fist-sized units,
which are then air-dried. In line with an article by Joyce Lockard (2011), Charcoal briquettes
can be made from plant materials normally go to waste, including sawdust, paper, charcoal,
fines, leaves, husks, and other agricultural wastes.
Carbonization
In order for charcoal to be produced from Mahogany fruit husk, the Mahogany fruit husk
undergoes a process called carbonization. This process was achieved through intense heating
of an organic material in the absence of oxygen. An empty large can with cover serves as
storage for Mahogany fruit husk that was used in the production of charcoal. The Mahogany
fruit husk was placed inside the empty cans in preparation for carbonization. The cans
containing Mahogany fruit husk was placed on the ground and sealed. After sealing, create
small holes on the cover to enable the release of air inside the can. The cans will be surrounded
with fire and this is where carbonization takes place. The process of carbonization lasted for
1-3 hours.
Stages in charcoal formation. As the wood is heated in the retort it
passes through definite stages on its way to conversion into charcoal. The formation of charcoal
under laboratory conditions has been studied and the following stages in the conversion process
have been recognized.
at 20 to 110°C, the wood absorbs heat as it is dried giving off its moisture as water vapor
(steam). The temperature remains at or slightly above 100°C until the wood is bone dry.
at 110 to 270°C, final traces of water are given off and the wood starts to decompose
giving off some carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, acetic acid, and methanol. Heat is absorbed.
at 270 to 290°C, this is the point at which exothermic decomposition of the wood starts.
Heat is evolved and breakdown continues spontaneously providing the wood is not cooled below
this decomposition temperature. Mixed gases and vapors continue to be given off together with
some tar.
11
PATEROS CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Senior High School Department
S.Y. 2020 – 2021
at 290 to 400°C, as breakdown of the wood structure continues, the vapors given off
comprise the combustible gases carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane together with carbon
dioxide gas and the condensable vapors: water, acetic acid, methanol, acetone, etc. and tars
which begin to predominate as the temperature rises.
at 400 to 500°C, at 400°C the transformation of the wood to charcoal is practically
complete. The charcoal at this temperature still contains appreciable amounts of tar, perhaps 30%
by weight trapped in the structure. This soft burned charcoal needs further heating to drive off
more of the tar and thus raise the fixed carbon content of the charcoal to about 75% which is
normal for good quality commercial charcoal.
To drive off this tar the charcoal is subject to further heat inputs to raise its temperature to about
500°C, thus completing the carbonization stage.
