Quarter 2 – Module 3:

Hydrometeorological Hazards

Activity 1. Will it rain or not?

Analyze the scenarios given below. Suppose that you plan to go out for a

picnic. Write YES if the scenario shows that it will rain and NO if it will not. Answer

the guide questions that follow.

____NO_________A. The sun is shining brightly.

_____NO________B. A high lying veil of clouds is seen on the horizon.

_____YES________C. It looks dark outside.

______YES_______D. It suddenly becomes windy.

_____YES________E. It is bright outside, but I see dark clouds at a distance.

____YES_________F. The temperature of the surroundings feels slightly cool.

____NO_________G. The sky has high-lying clouds.

_____NO________H. The surroundings feel humid.

Guide questions:

1. How can you tell if it will rain or not

If the clouds is dark its about to rain

2. Why do you need to be aware of the changes in your surroundings concerning

the weather?

It is critical that we understand how the climate is changing in order to plan for the
future. Climate research can help us estimate how much rain will fall in the next winter or
how far sea levels would rise owing to increasing sea temperatures.
Activity 2. What is happening?

Directions: Analyze the given situations or events. Write the hydrometeorological hazard
that you can associate with these situations. Choose from the list of hydrometeorological
hazards in the box below. You may have more than one answer for each item.

Situation/ event Associated hydrometeorological hazard

1. Heavy rainfall FLOOD

2. Puddles of water FLASHFLOOD

3. Strong winds TYPHOON

4. Dark clouds STORM SURGE

5. Thunder and lightning THUNDERSTORM

Guide question:

How can you relate the observation of changes in the surroundings to the preparation for a
hydrometeorological disaster such as typhoon, storm surge, flash flood, etc.?

Extreme meteorological and climatic phenomena, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes,

tornadoes, or landslides, produce hydrometeorological dangers. They account for the
majority of natural hazards and occur in all parts of the world, however the frequency and
severity of specific disasters, as well as society's vulnerability to them, vary by region.
Severe storms, high winds, floods, and droughts arise at distinct geographical and
temporal dimensions, but all have the potential to become catastrophes that inflict
considerable infrastructure damage and kill hundreds of thousands of people globally each
year. Multiple dangers can often occur at the same time or cause cascading effects from a
single extreme weather event.

Activity 4. Flood risk

Answer the questions:

1. According to the hazard map, which localities would be affected as a whole by flooding?
Pasig city and Marikina

2. What measures can be done by these localities to address this concern?

When addressing a problem, we must take into account each individual's perspective and
point of view on the issue. It is also critical to understand the root cause of the problem
and the factors that influence it. When there is a problem, keep in mind that there is a
solution.

What I Have Learned

1. What are the signs of different hydrometeorological hazards?

•Increased ocean Swell.

•Barometric Pressure Drop.

•Wind Speed.

•Heavy Rainfall.

2. What information can you obtain from hazard maps?

Hazard maps provide critical information to help people understand the risks of natural
disasters and to aid in disaster mitigation. Hazard maps show the extent of expected risk
areas and can be combined with disaster management information such as evacuation sites
and routes.

3. What tools are used to monitor hydrometeorological hazards?

The Standard Weather Station, Automatic Weather Station, Rain Gauge, Rainfall
Recorder and Logger, Evaporation Recorder, Snow Water Equivalent Recorder,
Pyranometer for Shortwave and Global Radiation, Cup Counter Anemometer, Wind Vane,
and Temperature Humidity Recorder are among the meteorological instruments available.
