Purpose of Molten Sulfur Preparation Unit:- Provide qualified molten stocks
for CS2 production.
Most of IBJ’s purchase is solid sulfur & very small amount of liquid Sulphur, though there is also a small
portion of molten sulfur.
Solid Sulphur:- IBJ’s purchase granular and flaky both type solid Sulphur. Both granular and flaky sulfur are
fine, though granules are the best. Avoid large lumps or powder. Store them in the warehouse in bulk quantity. By
Using JCB, solid Sulphur thrown into a hopper on the belt conveyor and transferred to melting tank for heating.
Molten sulfur is then transfer into an intermediary tank via gravity, filter, molten sulfur vessel, and finally recycled
sulfur pit 256 V 105 (SRU) ready for reaction or transfer to storage tank 1V106 A/B. (MSPU).
Liquid Sulphur:- Tanker truck dumps molten sulfur into molten sulfur pit (1V105) via pipeline connected to
the outlet of sulfur tank. Pump molten sulfur into recycled sulfur pit ready for immediate use or transfer to storage
tank for later use.

Flash Drum liquid Sulphur:-
• Molten sulfur recovered from flash evaporation process on the CS2 production line enters directly into an
intermediate sulfur tanks (1V102 A/B).
• When flash drum liquid Sulphur received in MSPU ,
Start low pressure steam to cut out air (Oxygen) inside vessel.
Maintain 800 ~ 1000mm level inside vessel to avoid excess air quantity inside the vessel.
Continues watch on vessel temperature gauge.
When total quantity received from RRU stop steam inside vessel after 5 minute & start agitator of vessel.
Immediate transfer vessel liquid Sulphur in MSPU storage tank or SRU Sulphur pit.

Characteristics of Sulfur
Solid Sulfur’s Heat of Transition
Note: From above you see that at 95.4℃ there is a process of phase transition from rhombic to monoclinic
before sulfur melts, requiring a heat energy of only 2.992kcal/kg.

Viscosity of Molten Sulfur
Note:- Molten sulfur’s
viscosity varies greatly on
temperature increase. At
190℃,sulfur viscosity is
10800 times greater than at
135℃, 14240 times greater
than at 155℃

Viscosity of Molten Sulfur
Note:- Above viscosity chart shows that the highest value is more than 14000 times the lowest, indicating also the trend of
the viscosity VS. temperature trend. Note that different sources of data may provide different viscosity values, but the trend
of the viscosity versus temperature curve is no different.

Sulfur Vapor Pressure P a
Note: At 140℃, sulfur vapor
pressure is 2.16 times
greater than at 125℃.
At150℃, sulfur steam
pressure is 3.74 times
greater than at 125℃.

Key Process point :-
★ Ignition Temperature:248~261℃。
★ At 140℃, sulfur Vapor pressure is 2.16 times greater than at 125℃, meaning evaporation loss of sulfur
doubles.
★ Sulfur vapor de-sublimates ( To change directly from a gas to a solid) very easily. That is why there are
usually lots of minute sulfur particles clinging to the upper part of the molten sulfur prep unit. Clean up the
unit’s outside surface, pipeline surface, as well as the inside top regularly.
★ Residue filtered out from the sulfur filter needs to be removed immediate. Clean up the filter at time
intervals decided by filtrate amount, sulfur quality and operational experience. Leave allowance to prevent
excessive sulfur clogging up the filter.

MSPU Training
Key Process point :-
★ Sulfur viscosity peaks at 185-200℃, and bottoms out at 150-155℃. Between them is a difference of more
than 14000 times the viscosity value. We usually maintain molten sulfur temperature at around 130℃. At that
temperature viscosity value is 1.44 times the lowest value. Absolute pressure is 0.00936 Pa’s,suitable for
smooth transfer of molten sulfur.
★ Better use steam to extinguish fire in sulfur tanks or sulfur pits.
★ Molten sulfur recycled from flash evaporation might have carbon disulfide dissolved in it. During transfer,
mixing and temperature increase, dissolved carbon disulfide may run out easily. Because the temperature of
dissolved carbon disulfide is the same as that of molten sulfur, which is above the ignition point of carbon
disulfide, once it runs out, it will self-ignite easily which in turn ignites molten sulfur, leading to fire or
explosion hazards. So, extreme care should be exercised to use low-pressure steam to drive out air inside the
intermediate sulfur tank before pumping molten sulfur from flash drums into that tank.

Key Process point :-
★ Recycled molten sulfur may contain trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide. Watch out for that during mixing
or temperature increase. Wear protections when clearing solidified sulfur out of sulfur pit cause there might
be residual hydrogen sulfide in the pit.
★ Molten sulfur contact parts in the sulfur pit are susceptible (Sanvedanasila) to corrosions. Pay close
attention to corrosion occurring in steam heating pipelines coming in and out the sulfur pit.
★ Sulfur quality varies, so does acidity of molten sulfur. High acidity leads to equipment corrosion. If high
acidity is discovered in feed stocks, add lime powder or alkali to intermediate sulfur tanks before filtration.
