A Wish-fulfilling Jewel

A sadhana for meditation and mantra recitation focused upon

Arya Tara
1 Preliminary meditations
Visualize that you sit surrounded by all beings in the form of Tara, male to
your right and female to your left. They are your mothers and your fathers,
looking like Tara. Then recite the following verse of refuge and bodhichitta,
as well as the verse of four immeasurable thoughts.

1.1 Refuge and bodhichitta

SANG-GYE CHO DANG TSOG-KYI CHOG-NAM-LA
JANG-CHUB BAR-DU DAG-NI KYAB-SU-CHI
DAG-GI JIN-SOG GYI-PE SO-NAM-KYI
DRO-LA PEN-CHIR SANG-GYE DRUB-PAR-SHOG

In the Buddha, Dharma, and Supreme Community

I take refuge from now until enlightenment.
By the merit of practicing generosity and other perfections,
May I become Buddha for the benefit of all beings.

1.2 The four immeasurables

SEM CHEN TAM CHAY DEWA DANG DEWAY GYU DANG DEN PAR GYUR CHIG
SEM CHEN TAM CHAY DUG NELL DANG DUG NELL KYI GYU DANG DRAL
WAR GYUR CHIG
SEM CHEN TAM CHAY DUG NGAL ME PAY DEWA DANG MI DREL WAR GYUR
CHIG
SEM CHEN TAM CHAY NYE RING CHAG DANG NYI DANG DREL WAY DANG
NYOM LA NAY PAR GYURCHIG

May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes

May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes
May all sentient beings not be separated from joy beyond sorrow.
May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free from attachment and
aversion to near and far.

1.3 Emptiness meditation

Then recite the emptiness mantra. Visualize that the world dissolves into
your body, that into your heart syllable, and that into emptiness. Rest the
mind in emptiness for some minutes.
OM SOBHAWA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SOBHAWA SHUDDHO HAM.

All dharmas are empty of self-nature, free from duality nature from the very
beginning.
2 Generation of oneself as Arya Tara
From within the sphere of emptiness there appears the syllable PAM. This
transforms into a lotus bearing the syllable AH.
AH transforms into a moon disk that covers the center of the lotus, the
syllable TAM standing upon it.
TAM becomes an utpala marked by TAM.
Lights shine forth from the TAM, delighting all buddhas of the three times
and ten directions. The lights then draw back, bringing the blessings of all
buddhas.
Again lights radiate forth. They perform the two purposes.
The utpala and TAM transform into light, and remerge as myself in the form
of Arya Tara.
White OM marks my forehead, red AH my throat, and blue HUM my heart.
Lights shine forth from the HUM at my heart, inviting Arya Tara, who,
surrounded by a host of buddhas and bodhisattvas, comes into the space
before me.
JAH HUM BAM HOH.

The Wisdom Beings merge with myself visualized as Arya Tara.

Again lights shine from the HUM at my heart, inviting the Empowerment
Deities. I call to them, “Please empower me.” They hold up vases filled with
empowerment nectars and pour these on me. These flow into me and
completely fill my body. They overflow through my crown aperture, and the
overflow transforms into Buddha Amitabha, who becomes my crown
ornament.

2.1 The outer offering

OM ARYA TARA SAPARIWARA ARGHAM, PADYAM, PUSHPE, DHUPE, ALOKE,
GANDHE, NAIVINDYA, SHABDA PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA.

2.2 The mandala offering

SA SHI PO CHU JUK SHING METOK TRAM
RIRAP LING SHI NYIDA GYENPA DI
SANGYE SHYING DU MIK PA PULWA YI
DRO KUN NAMDAK SHYING LA CHOPAR SHOK
OM IDAM GURU RATNA MANDALA KAM NIRYATAYAMI

The earth, purified with scented water and strewn with flowers,
And adorned with Sumeru, the king of mountains,
The four quarters of the universe, and the sun and the moon I hold up,
envision as a Pure Land Paradise,
And offer, so that all beings might experience their world as a Paradise.
By virtue of this offering, may all beings here and now attain the happiness
of that pure land!
OM IDAM GURU RATNA MANDALA KAM NIRYATAYAMI

2.3 Verse of praise

To Tara, mother of all Buddhas
Who frees from all poverty I bow.
Homage to Arya Tara, at whose lotus feet
Even celestial beings pay homage.

Optional: One can also at this time recite the verses of praise, known as
“The Twenty-One Taras”.
3 Mantra recitation
3.1 The ten-syllable mantra
Visualize a moon disc at your heart, the syllable TAM standing at its center,
and the ten syllable Tara mantra surrounding it. As you chant the mantra,
imagine that lights emanate from syllable TAM and the mantras,
accomplishing the various purifications and activities as described in the
oral transmission.
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SVAHA

Repeat 21 or 108 times, or if on retreat, then for as many as are possible.

3.2 Other mantras

The ten-syllable mantra is the general mantra that is to be used daily. In
addition, the First Dalai Lama’s sadhana mentions eight variations that can
be used for specific purposes. My recommendation is to do the main part of
the session with only the ten-syllable mantra above, and then do a few each
of the following eight mantras.
1) Increasing lifespan
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE MAMA AYU PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA
2) Increasing creative energy
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE MAMA PUNYA PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA
3) Increasing wisdom
OM TARE TUTTARE MAMA PRAJNA PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA
4) Increasing personal success
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE MAMA KIRTI PUSHTIM KURU SVAHA
5) Eliminating diseases
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SARVA JVARAN BHYAH SHANTIM KURU SVAHA
6) Eliminating hindrances
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SARVA VIGHANAN BHYAH SHANTIM KURU
SVAHA
7) Pacifying the wandering mind
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SARVA CHITTA VIKULE BHYAH SHANTIM KURU
SVAHA
8) Dispelling the occurrence of bad dreams
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SARVA DURSVAPNAN DURNIMI SHANTIM KURU
SVAHA

3.3 The hundred-syllable mantra

Then recite the hundred-syllable mantra three times to purify stains of any
mistakes done in the practice, such as mental wandering or sleepiness, etc.
OM PADMASATTVA SAMAYAM ANUPALAYA
PADMASATTVA TVENOPATISHTHA
DRDHO ME BHAVA
SUTOSHYO ME BHAVA
SUPOSHYO ME BHAVA
ANURAKTO ME BHAVA
SARVASIDDHIM ME PRAYACCHA
SARVAKARMASU CA ME
CHITTAM SHREYAH KURU HUM
HA HA HA HA HO
BHAGAVAN SARVA TATHAGATA PAD MA ME MUNCHA
PADME BHAVA MAHASAMAYASATTVA
AH HUM PHAT

Whatever I have done incorrectly

Because of not finding the proper materials, lack of knowledge,
Or through lack of ability,
Please show patience with me.

3.4 Outer offering

OM ARYA TARA SAPARIWARA ARGHAM, PADYAM, PUSHPE, DHUPE, ALOKE,
GANDHE, NAIVINDYA, SHABDA PRATICCHA HUM SVAHA.
4 Dissolution
Conclude the practice by dissolving all into emptiness.
The world then dissolves into myself as Arya Tara. I then dissolve from
head down and feet up into the TAM at my heart. That dissolves into
emptiness. Rest the mind in emptiness for as long as you wish.
This is the practice of Kriya Mahamudra.
Then re-emerge from emptiness as Arya Tara, get up from your meditation,
and go about your ordinary activities.
In one instant I emerge from emptiness as glorious Arya Tara, embodiment
of buddha karma. All forms I see as mandala pure lands, all sounds as vajra
music and all thought as joy and radiance.

5 Dedication of merit
GE WA DIYI NYUR DU DAK
JETSUN DROLMA DRUP-GYUR-NE
DROWA CHIK-KYANG MA-LU-PA
DEYI SALA GO-PAR SHOG

Through the positive energy of this practice

May I quickly attain the enlightenment state of Arya Tara.
And thus may I help bring all living beings
Without exception to the very state of enlightenment.

JANG CHUB SEM CHOK RINPOCHE

MA KYE PA NA KYE GYUR CHIK
KYE-PA NYAM-PA MEYPA YANG
GONG NEY GONG DU PEYWAR SHOK

May precious and supreme bodhichitta

If not yet aroused be now aroused.
And if I already have some of this peerless bodhichitta,
May it grow from high to higher.
