LED Dot Matrix Message Display
Abstract:
: The information sharing aspect of information technology is playing
a prominent role in all kinds of business either it’s non-profit
organization or profit organization. Now a days, all types of business
requires and adopts the facility of advertisement to promote their
services and [Link] advertisement is the current requirement
of the modern businesses sand information world. Scrolling led dot
matrix displays are used at international airports, stock exchanges,
metro railway stations, shopping complex, bus stations etc. led display
is an effective mode on displaying information but the complicated task
is to make the message dynamic as the users have to change the
massage content according to this specific requirements. In case of
changing the message content the user have to connect the led display
with the computer, so that the display board cannot be placed any
where because of dedicated and complex wiring pattern. Wireless
based dot matrix display makes the wireless connection between user
mobile and led display. It provides the facility of real time message
displaying means the user can change the message content that is to be
display. A mobile is used to send the message to the led display and the
microcontroller does all processing of displaying the message content
on the led display in scrolling pattern. The aim of the project is to
develop a wireless scrolling message board that facility the user to
change the message content without connecting the display board with
the computer or laptop through a cable. The user can update the
message content through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
Introduction:
This project is based on the idea of designing a led display system for
wireless communication between mobile and led display. In this,
wireless communication is done by Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Now a day every
mobile consist of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features. The users having mobile
hand set can send message to the display to flash or to display message
content in scrolling pattern. Bluetooth module is used to receive the
message in circuit. The message content sent by the user is stored in
Bluetooth module in case, the user can sent message by using wifi then
led controller was received the message and stored in it. The led dot
matrix display consist 8*8 matrix with a distance between the rows or
pins is 10mm. a preprogrammed microcontroller is used to supply with
the standard format of character set containing character and
alphabets with the possibility of generating and displaying punctuation
marks, numbers, special characters, simple graphics. Each character is
display in the pattern based on hexadecimal values that are stored in
the microcontroller that is termed as look up or match table. The
microcontroller looks or matches from pattern and sent out the data
bits serially and clock signal. Shift registers are used to shift dada
between the pins connected to each led. Persistence of vision is the
based of the fast scanning of data that is set on rows and column,
which allows the pattern to be display because of persistence of vision.
Decode counter is used to control the rows on the bases of pulses that
is connected to the clock input of the microcontroller the design
involves both hardware and software. The wireless system of
communication requires the following hardware components

Background
Our project began with a significant amount of brainstorming in order to solve the
problem at hand. We were given a large amount of freedom with how we wanted
to go about displaying information, so naturally our ideas changed course several
times very drastically in the early stages. This chapter gives an overview of the
process that brought us to the design stage of our project Our goals were very
broad, but a clear organization of them provided guidance that helped to lead us
through our design.
Defining Goals:
Our goals were very broad, but a clear organization of them provided guidance
that helped to lead us through our design.
[Link] a functional display that will entertain and inform.
[Link] for modularity and expansion.
[Link] a means of reprogramming our display with updated information.
[Link] power consumption within reasonable constraints.
Using these goals, we were able to begin our research into the optimal way to
accomplish each goal.
Background Research:
Originally, our group was under the impression that we were going to be
designing a power storage system for our display as well. Some of our initial
research included searching for solar panels as well as lead-acid batteries in order
accomplish this aspect of the project, however, after a short amount of time we
learned that another MQP group would be working on this extensive task. This
left us able to focus almost exclusively on the display itself.
Motion Sensing LED Panels:
Early in our research we discovered that there are LED panels on the market that
can be purchased in kit form and assembled at home by the consumer. The panel
contains sensors that trigger a processor when a hand is waving in front of the
panel, causing the LEDʼs to turn on and flash. A key point is that the panels are
also modular, and can be connected very easily to any side of an adjacent panel.
While the idea is intriguing, this concept would serve a purely entertaining
purpose, as the resolution and color capabilities are lacking to say the least.
These panels consume have an approximate maximum power consumption of 5
Watts per 12”x12” panel, and use a 24 Volt DC adapter This gave us a very vague
idea of what we could expect. There are a much smaller number of LEDʼs per
square foot than we would like, and a higher resolution will obviously mean
higher power consumption.
Dot Matrices:
In our search to improve the versatility of our design, we began to look for more
simplistic ideas that would allow us to have more control over the system. Dot
matrices with strictly LEDʼs spaced evenly in rows and columns seemed to be the
most organized, uniform way of presenting the lighting. Due to the low variety of
such products on the market, we decided to order four matrices of 64 dots in
order to test a rough design and learn more about the function and
characteristics we will be working with. The model that was purchased can be
seen in the figure below.
Betlux 8x8 RGB Dot Matrix Though this model isnʼt the ideal component, as it is
very small and compact, not many alternatives were found that would give us the
freedom and efficiency that these matrices presented us. Also, the pins on the
matrix fit perfectly into a breadboard, which makes for easy prototyping. We also
explored the way that colors are presented to a viewer with a dot matrix as well.
Many systems use dichromatic principles, meaning each dot contains a red and
green LED. Thus, mixing the two colors presents the user more possible color
combinations. We liked the idea of red, green and blue LEDʼs being present in
each dot. With three colors to combine, we would have much more wavelength
options, and the blue LED adds an effect that would work well as a background
against the brighter red or green graphics that will be displayed. Figure 1-4: Betlux

be displayed. As can be seen in the diagram above, each matrix contains 32 pins.
16 of these pins operate the 8 rows, and the other 16 pins operate the 8 columns
of the matrix.
