The Problem and it’s Background

1.1 Introduction

School is a place where children learn new things and develop their character and skills. This
place also helps them to mold themselves into something that they wanted to be. School is
considered to be the “second home” but we cannot guarantee the safety of children in it because
this can also be a battlefield, a place of survival may it seem where the strongest are honored
while the weakest once are bullied.

Bullying is said to be an act of intentionally causing harm to other, through verbal harassment,
physical assault, or more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation. Bullying in school is
also referred to as peer abuse. In colloquial speech, bullying often describe as form of
“harassment” perpetrated by an abuser who possesses more physical or social power and
dominance than the victim.

Well, the concept of bullying in schools is not new today yet, it is needed to give much attention
to prevent the increase of numbers of victims.

1.2 Background of the study

Bullying isn’t new news to us but still it is a big problem that most schools faced. As the years
passed by, the rate of the bullying here in Philippines increased not only in schools, but also
throughout the internet. Bullying can affect a person physically, mentally, emotionally, socially
and spiritually. It can change the perspective of a person towards its life that might lead into such
worst scenarios specifically; death. Bullying can really change one’s life

Character traits are all the aspects of a person’s behaviour and attitude that make up that person’s
personality. Each one of us has a different combination of traits that makes up to have a
personality that we are the only one has and make us unique. Bullying is all about behaviour,
how they interact and behave on their surroundings. The researchers conducted this study to
determine the traits of the bully and the victim so we can easily detect and monitor them. This
would help us to immediately make an action to prevent more severe events that might happen.

Behavior is one of the most mysterious aspects of human composition. It does affect everyone
and everything around you. Bullying may not be considered as a serious mental problem rather it
is a rude or unacceptable action toward others that may cause physical or mental pressure
towards the victim. Bullies are people who have their reasons too. They might have gone under
the same reasons or they just want to avenge them or there are other factors that make them like
that. The hypothesis of our study will soon turn out as a fact as soon as we finished our study.

8
1.3 Statement of the problem
Bullying still appears to be a big hindrance to one’s emotional growth; hence, it also affects the
victim physically.

Main problem:
What are the traits of the bullied and the bullies?

Specific Problem:
What are the factors that triggers for him to be bullied or to bully?

1.4 Assumptions

After a month of studying, we researchers hypothesized that those who possessed much
negatives traits are the one who are most likely to bully than to be bullied.

1.5 Significance of the study

The result of this study would help a certain group or individual maybe able to gain are follow:

Students- This helps them to be aware and knowledgeable about the behaviour of an individual.
They could also be a big help in making the first step to prevent bullying.

Parents- Help them to have a sense in such a way they should be the role model of their children
to avoid developing such behaviours thus, they will have the strategies for the development of
their children. This can prevent them doing worst things such as committing suicide.

School- Where children starts to develop and learn things and choose to be what they want and
who they really are. They can build up new ideas on how bullying can be prevented and be
solved easily to help children to have a happy and peaceful path as they grow up. They can also
guide them and teaches them to be interested in such things such as simply having an interaction
with other people.

9
1.6 Scope and limitations
This scope focuses on the traits of junior and senior highschool students who bully and gets
bullied and what are the factors that trigger them to bully an individual or to be bullied by
someone. This study directly involves bullies and those who are bullied. This study aims to
deepen our knowledge on why and how bullies act that way. This will us understand them and in
the same time help them as well through giving care love and attention.

1.7 Definition of terms

Bullying- the process of intimidating or mistreating somebody weaker or in a more vulnerable

situation.

Bully- An aggressive person who intimidates or mistreats weaker people

Behavior- the way in which somebody behaves.

Coercion- is the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.

Colloquial- used in ordinary or familiar conversation; not formal or literary.

Review of Related Literature

2.1 Conceptual literature

Bullying and harassment are not new issues that students and schools face. In fact, over the years
it has been view as being so common place in schools that it has been overlooked as a threat to
students and reduced to a belief that bullying in a development stage that most youth will
experience the get over.

The harassment is not isolated to schools alone. But schools are the best place to actively
intervene. Teachers, administrators, counselors and even students have the greatest access to the
most students through a school system it is here that school stuff can intervene, support and
educate students about ending bullying behaviors directly and indirectly: breaking the bullying
cycle. This paper will address bullying in general at all grade level but its intervention focus will
be at the highschool level.

According also to Harris and Hathorn, “Because adolescence is a difficult time in childs
maturation, bullying exacerbates this difficult times by forming barriers to positive connections
with other students and school faculty members. Consequently, the presence of bullying at
school often creates a barrier for young people to develop into well adjusted adults”.
Highschool is the last opportunity educators have to work with students at building characters for
some students this maybe the last opportunity for an intervention to change behaviour, before
they become adults in the work place, with a family in the community at large.

11
2.2 Research literature

Today, bullying is considered to be one of the most common and pervasive forms of school
violence (Swearer & Doll, 2001). Much of what has been learned to date comes from studies
conducted in Scandinavian countries, Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Australia, the Netherlands,
and Japan (Banks, 1997; Olweus, 1993). An important conclusion drawn from this research is
the universality of bullying behaviors (Macklem, 2003). Bullying is a problem in all schools and
countries around the world.

Throughout the 1990s, a number of studies were conducted to understand the prevalence and
incidence of bullying. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2004)
reported that approximately 50% of all children had been bullied while in school and that 10% of
those that had been bullied were victimized on a regular basis. A subsequent study, representing
the first nationwide research on bullying in the U.S., was conducted by the National Institute of
Child Health and Development. This study found that in grades sixth through tenth, 16% of
students indicated that others had bullied them during the current term. Almost 30% reported that
they had been involved as a bully, a victim, or both (Nansel, Overpeck, Pilla, Ruan, Simons-
Morton, and Scheidt, 2001). Ericson (2001) used these data to estimate that 1.6 million students
in these grades were bullied at least once a week. Moreover, based on the original study, the
National Institute of Child Health and Development found that bullying behaviors were a marker
for involvement in future violence-related behaviors. In fact, it reported that children and youth
that engaged in bullying behaviors were the group most at risk for engaging in violent behaviors
over time (Nansel, T.R., Overpeck, M.,D., Haynie, D.L., Ruan, W.J., & Scheidt , 2003).

23

Chapter V
Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

5.1 Summarization
Bullying is a form of abuse. It involves repeated acts over time attempting to create or enforce
one group or person's power over another group or person, thus an "imbalance of power”. The
researchers focus on knowing the traits of a bully and the victims and the factors that triggers for
them to be bullied. We have given out questionnaires to 25 bullies and 25 victims with a total of
50 people. As the questionnaires has been finished answering, the data we’re immediately tallied,
compared, studied and calculated.

5.2 Conclusions

We researchers concluded that the presence of parents as the child is growing up has the one of
the major factors why do they develop such traits. Parents should be the role model of their
children as they grow up. They needed their guidance, protection, attention and love. Mostly, the
one who bully possessed violent traits because they are lack of attention and guidance.

5.3 Recommendation

To get more accurate results, instead of only handing out some questionnaires, try to interview
and observe the students in school on how they behave and interact with other people. This
method might take too long but this is more effective.
