Toby’s Pet Hen
Toby found a fluffy brown chick. He loved the little chick
and took good care of her. “I’ll call you Henny,” said Toby.
Henny grew into a large red hen. Toby and his father
built her a coop in the backyard. She had a place to
roost at night, plenty of water, and good food. But
Henny wanted to be with Toby. She would get out
of the coop and go looking for him.
Every day Toby heard someone call his name.
“Toby! Get this chicken out of my kitchen!” or
“Toby! Get your hen out of my car!”

One day Father said to Toby, “I think Henny is

lonesome. She needs to be with other chickens.”
They took Henny to Uncle Jay’s farm to live with his
chickens. It made Toby sad to leave Henny at the farm,
but it made Henny happy to be with other chickens.

1. How did Toby get his chick?

2. How did Toby take care of Henny?

3. Why did people keep calling Toby?

4. Why did Toby and Father take Henny to the farm?

Chickens
Hens lay eggs. Some eggs are gathered as food for
people. Some eggs are left in the hen’s nest to hatch.
The hen sits on her eggs to keep them warm.
She tucks the eggs under her body and turns
them over with her beak.
Inside the eggs, chicks are growing. After
about twenty days the chicks peck their way
out of the eggs. When they hatch, chicks are
small and covered with fluffy feathers. The
baby chickens grow quickly. Before very long
they will grow into hens or roosters.

1. How does a hen take care of her eggs?

2. What happens inside the eggs?

3. What would happen if people used all the eggs for food?

Hurricane Hunters
Hurricanes are severe storms with heavy
rains and powerful winds. They can cause
tremendous damage over large areas. So why
would anyone want to fly a plane right into a
hurricane? Hurricane hunters do so to collect
information that can help scientists better
understand these storms and make more
accurate predictions.
The first plane ever to fly intentionally into a
hurricane was piloted by a U.S. Army Air Force
colonel named Joe Duckworth. On July 27, 1943,
Colonel Duckworth flew into a hurricane not just once, but twice. He reported, “On the
whole, neither flight through the hurricane was as uncomfortable as a good, rough
thunderstorm.”
Today, the Air Force Reserve 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron and the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) both fly specially equipped planes
through hurricanes. They send information to the National Hurricane Center. Jessica
Williams is a hurricane hunter who works for NOAA. She uses her training, skills, and
experience to help guide the planes safely through hurricanes on flights that may last for
eight hours or more. She and the other hurricane hunters fly through intense updrafts and
downdrafts, extreme precipitation including hail, and lightning to gather data that will
improve forecasts and help save lives.

1. Why is Colonel Duckworth’s flight considered a historic achievement?

2. What happens to the data the hurricane hunters collect?

3. How could the information gathered by hurricane hunters help save lives?

4. Would you like to fly into a hurricane? Why or why not.
