The Kartilya ng Katipunan is a set of principles that outlines how each and every Filipino must
live their life to the fullest while upholding moral standards. It centralizes for love of the country
and countrymen to fight for the truth, dignity, honor, equality, and freedom. Every Katipunero must
embody the qualities and self-reflection expressed in the Kartilya ng Katipunan and was created
to alter people's perceptions of the inappropriate behavior displayed by all Filipinos.

2. The main issues and concerns discussed in the document.

The document's main issue focuses on how Filipinos maintained their dignity and patriotism
at the time. This Kartilya of Katipunero attest on how intellectual Filipinos are back then, when
they established organization based on Masonic rites and principles to organize armed resistance
and terrorist assassinations in complete secrecy. It functioned as a parallel Filipino government,
complete with a president and cabinet. Their goal was to unite the people and prepare them for
an armed conflict in order to free the country from Spanish tyranny. To be a katipunero, Andres
first developed a code of conduct, to which the Dekalogo ng Katipunan was attributed. However,
it was never published; rather, it was claimed that after learning Jacinto's Kartilya, Bonifacio
ordered that it was preferable to his Dekalogo and approved it as the Katipunan's official primer.

1. Author’s background (Personal/Professional/Educational Background)

Emilio Jacinto y Dizon was born on December 15, 1875 in Trozo, Tondo, Manila. He studied
Bachelor of Arts at San Juande Letran College. He was perhaps the youngest individual from the
revolutionary society at 18 years old, he joined the katipunan and halted his law schooling at the
University of Santo Tomas. He was a Filipino general during the Philippine Revolution. He was
one of the highest-ranking officers in the Philippine Revolution and was one of the highest-ranking
officers of the revolutionary society Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak
ng Bayan, or simply and more popularly called as ”Katipunan”. He was known as both the soul
and the brain of the Katipunan. He wrote Kartilya ng Katipunan to helped Filipinos to lead the fight
for Filipino independence from Spain.

• The Katipunan was a Philippine revolutionary society founded by anti-Spanish Filipinos in


Manila in 1892, whose primary aim was to gain independence from Spain.
• Enlightenment in Europe - Enlightened rationality gave way to the rise of Romanticism. By
the 19th-century it paves its way to Liberalism and Classicism then in the 20th-century,
Modernism.
• French Revolution - The ideas of enlightenment and the French Revolution inspired the
Ilustrados in Europe and in the island. These two events in the globe encouraged the
Filipinos to take up a stand for reforms and later independence. Books from Europe easily
reached the Philippines thru the Suez Canal and thus this leads to the spread of the idea
of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
• Coming of Masonry in the Philippines - In 1856, Freemasonry was introduced in the
Philippines, however, native Filipinos were not allowed to join the organization. - In 1889,
Graciano Lopez-Jaena organized the Logia Revolución in Barcelona thru the support of
Grande Oriente Español hence the root of true Philippine Masonry.
• Propaganda Movement - The death of Gomburza in 1872 awakened strong feelings of
anger and resentment among the Filipinos. The Filipino ilustrados aimed for reforms
and so they created a systematic movement and they used a peaceful means of battling
the Spanish government called the Propaganda Movement.
• La Liga and the Cuerpo de Compromisarios - In 1892, Jose Rizal arrived home and with
the support of the Masonic Leaders, he established the La Liga Filipina. However, he was
arrested and soon deported to Dapitan. Some Filipinos were convinced that separation
from Spain was the only alternative – some members united with the radical
movement - Katipunan of Bonifacio, Arellano, Plata and other Logia Taliba members.

The Kartilya ng Katipunan brought long-term historical impact and relevance in


contemporary times as this text outlines lessons, standards, and guidelines for the new generation
of Filipinos throughout the Spanish era in which it opposes gender inequality in our society.
Through this paper, the information in this article was helpful for better understanding and
knowledge of how heroic our Katipuneros was. It also enables us to understand their way of life.
It is a kind of literary work that also exemplifies the intellectual character of those who fought for
our independence. The relevance of this document, motivates the new generation to continue,
preserve, and value historical events that happened in the Philippines which will aspires us to
love the country and countrymen to fight for the truth, dignity, honor, equality, and freedom.
