English 1320/1301-Rhetoric and Composition 1 Studio MWF Calendar

STAGE 1 Week 1 MON Work on and turn in Stage 1: Reflecting on Reading, Writing, and Learning Briefly introduce class Set up small writing groups that will work together throughout the semester, develop some writing goals for the semester based on student interests and concerns, and exchange contact information. Student introductions If youre using a Blog or any kind of online tool, make sure everyone has access.

Homework Find and read the class syllabus and calendar. Write down any questions you have and be prepared to ask them next class. Ill be reading and commenting on your in-class writing.

WED Discuss syllabus, answer questions, discuss Stage 1 writings. Question for focused discussion: What is good writing? Preview Downs & Wardles Teaching About Writing, Righting Misconceptions: (Re)Envisioning First-Year Composition as Introduction to Writing Studies: Well look at the title and the opening of our first reading by Downs & Wardle (D&W) on the ELMO and/or iPads, get into small groups, and Ill ask each group to talk to the whole class about what they think D&W are talking about and what their experiences have been with writing.

Homework Find and print out our first reading, Downs and Wardles Teaching About Writing, Righting Misconceptions: (Re)Envisioning First-Year Composition as Introduction to Writing Studies. Well talk more about it and our reading strategies during our next class.

FRI Discuss reading strategies for D&W and review what we want to do in English 1301 in terms of writing, reading, and learning. Each of your groups will take a paragraph from the beginning of the article and draft a summary of it, a question you have about it, and some possible ways you could respond to it. Share group work on board.

Homework Find all the readings for the semester and print them out. Read our first reading, by Downs and Wardle, twiceno joke. I dont care how you take notes or read or procrastinate. Just get through the article twice before our next class. Here are just a few questions you can work through as you read the D&W piece:

1. What did you expect 1301 to be about, to be like? What do you think about it so far having only
survived one meeting? What do D&W want 1301 to be and do for students (and even teachers)? 2. What are the reasons D&W discuss to support a "writing studies" approach, and what are the misconceptions they are fighting against? What other approaches to this class can you imagine? What do you think a college writing class should be? 3. According to D&W, what does scholarly inquiry involve? And what does writing involve/look like? 4. Do you recognize Jack and/or Stephanie (in yourself, in others)? How would you characterize yourself as a student just starting 1301, as a writer, as a reader, as a person trying to make sense of this class right now? How would your story of 1301 begin from your perspective?

Remember, in this class, I am asking you to read articles for which you are NOT the primary audience. They will be challenging, but they are also written about people like you--college students. And I believe undergraduates, especially first- and second-year students, can benefit from being part of this kind of academic conversation. My job is to push you and support you. And dont think I find these articles easy to read; I still struggle.

Week 2 MON Labor Day - No Classes

WED Discuss D&W. Discuss reading questions and how they could inform a student response paper. Draft in-class response to D&W

Homework Continue writing and revising your response while re-reading D&W.

FRI Share and workshop responses. Discuss strengths and weaknesses of responses (with student examples).

Homework Read Diazs Seven Ways High School Prepares You for Failure Make sure you bring Haas & Flowers Reading Rhetorically for our next class.

STAGE 2 Week 3 MON Discuss Diaz; in-class writing/activity over Diaz Introduce Haas & Flowers Reading Rhetorically (H&F) In groups, read the first few pages of H&F and draft a group summary and response to what you think they are talking about.

Homework On your own, read H&F. To help you get through it, pay attention to the three categories of reading strategies they identify in the article; rhetorical reading should stand out to you at as a successful approach to reading. Some other questions to keep in mind as you read and prepare for our discussion:

1. How do you read articles that I assign? Do you read other texts differently or the same? Why? 2. Try reading a paragraph from D&W and H&F out loud and make yourself say out loud what you're thinking while you're reading (by pausing, of course, in the reading). What kind of reading strategies did you use? Do you have some that H&F did not identify in their study? 3. Describe what happens to you when a piece of reading is engaging," when you are neutral, and when you are mostly turned off? What seems to be your way of reading, or what are your reading needs.

WED Discuss and map H&F in small groups (paper and/or Mindo) and then as a class

Homework Practice putting yourself in conversation with both our readings from D&W and H&F. Write a paragraph in which you tell us what you think each article is saying, to what degree you agree with their positions, and how these two readings might be connected to each other. Include at lease one direct (quote) and one indirect (paraphrase) reference. Include citations, using MLA format (see Readings section in syllabus), for both articles after your paragraph in a section titled Works Cited.

FRI Discuss how you as writers can effectively and compellingly enter conversations and how to represent what other writers/thinkers say accurately and fairly.

Homework Read Stage 2: (Re)Theorizing Misconceptions. Bring a list of concerns and/or questions about the assignment to class on MON. Also bring in a construct you'd like to explore in Stage 2.

Week 4 MON Discuss Stage 2 Generate ideas for and draft Stage 2 in small groups and discuss any questions you have.

STAGE 4 Week 7 MON Discuss Stage 4: Pursuing Your Question, Developing Your Theory Create Stage 4 calendar: what do you need to re-read, who do you need to contact, do you need to create any surveys/interview questions? What kinds of info would make sense to gather, where will it come from, and when?

Homework Read Kantz Since your brains may be exhausted, here's some help. Kantz continues the academic conversation specific to the Haas and Flower article youve already read, so there are connections to make between the two. Think about your writing processes so far this semester. Think about the assignments Ive given you in the Stages. Are you able to make connections between them and Kantzs article? Do you feel the assignments push you to ask rhetorical questions of yourself? How so? Evaluate your earlier writing as you read the article.
