BED BATH RETURN DEMONSTRATION
Good day, everyone! I’m Katrina Allyn A. Cordero from BSN11-i. Today, I will be performing my
return demonstration about a complete bed bath which means that I need to wash someone
who is in bed and it is important because it cleans the skin and helps the patient feel refreshed.
Washes hands and provides privacy.
Prior to the conduct of the procedure I have performed hand washing to protect myself and
client from any pathogenic microorganisms. I have also closed the door, fixed the curtains,
adjusted the room temperature and provided adequate lightning to ensure my clients comfort
and integrity.
Identifies, explains, and assesses the patient.
Good morning, Sir! I am Katrina Allyn A. Cordero your student nurse for today. May I ask for
your complete name and birthday please? Okay, thankyou, Sir. Today, I will be doing a bed bath
which means that I’m going to wash your body and remove the accumulated dirt,oils and
respirations in your skin and of course for you to feel refreshed. Will that be okay?
Offers the bedpan or urinal and asks client to void
We also need to offer bedpan to the client because the client will be more comfortable after
voiding, and voiding before cleaning the perineum is advisable.
Sir, would you like to void this time?No. \
Brings the necessary equipment and wears correct PPE. Wear gloves.
We need to make sure that all equipments are complete such as, basin with warm water, soap,
wash cloth a bath blanket, bath towels, moisturizing lotion, deodorant, eye drops, working
gloves, eye patch and a comb because this will help us to maintain proper organization and also
to conserve time and energy. Now, I will be putting my gloves on.
Raises the bed to a convenient working height and lowers side rails near the nurse.
In a hospital setting, naturally, I’ll have to raise the bed to a comfortable working height and
lower down the side rails at my side because this avoids undue reaching and straining and also
promotes good body mechanics.
Assists the patient to the side of the bed
Now, I have to assist my client to move closer to my side of the bed to ensure my clients safety.
Sir, I need you to move here a little. Thank you so much, Sir.
Place the bath blanket over the patient and remove the soiled top sheet beneath and
place it into the hamper.
After that, I’m gonna have to place the bath blanket over my patient because it provides comfort
and privacy. Can you please hold this for me, Sir? Also. I need to remove the soiled top sheet
beneath my patient
Removes the patient’s gown. (If the patient has an intravenous line, injury, or reduced
mobility, begin on the unaffected side.)
Now, I need to remove my client's gown. If the patient has an intravenous line or injury then I
should begin on the unaffected area. Sir, please slide out your hand please.
Fills the basin with 2/3 full of warm water (43 – 46°C) and checks the temperature of the
water.
After removing the patient's gown, I now have a basin full with ⅔ of warm water. I need the
patient to check the temperature of the water if it is tolerable with him.
Let the patient check the temperature of the water and make sure the patient can tolerate
it.
Sir, can you please check the water if its temperature is too hot or cold?
Removes patient's pillow if the patient's condition allows and raises the head of the bed
to 30-45 degrees.
Next thing that I’m gonna do is to remove the pillow under my patient.
Wash the face.
Place the towels appropriately. (First towel: under the patient's head; Second towel: over
the patient's chest.)
Next is, I need to place the towel appropriately. The first towel will be placed under my patient’s
head and the other one is over the patient's chest.
Wash the client's eyes with water only and dry them well. Use a separate corner of the
washcloth for each eye. [Ask whether the client wants soap used on the face.]
Sir, I’m gonna start by washing your eyes first. In washing the patient's eyes the first thing to do
is to soak the washcloth in the water and rinse it thoroughly and fold it to create a bath mitten.
In bathing the patient's eyes you should start from the inner canthus to the other canthus using
a separate washcloth. Sir, do you want to use soap in washing your face?
Wash, rinse, and dry the client's face, ears, and neck.
After washing and drying the patient’s eye now, I’m going to proceed now in washing the
patient's face, ears and neck. Sir, do you want to use soap in washing your face?
Starting from the forehead then cheeks, nose , ears and neck.
Asks the male patient if he'd like a shave.

Unconscious Patients:
Wash the eye with plain warm water, starting from inner to the outer canthus using a new
section of the cloth in each eye.
If the patient is unconscious, we need to wash the eyes with plain warm water only starting from
inner to the outer canthus using a new section of the cloth in each eye.
If prescribed, instills eye drops or ointment. If no blink reflex, keeps the eyelid close.
Instills eye drops if prescribed. If the patient has no blinking reflex, then we should leave the
eyelids closed.
Closes eyelids gently and places eye patch or shield.
Then, place an eye patch on the patient's eyes gently.
Washes the arms and hands.
Exposes the patient’s far arm and places the bath towel lengthwise beneath the arm.
Now, I’m gonna have to place a towel underneath his arm
Wets, soaps, rinses and dries then covers the arm and axillae (from distal to proximal).
Then, starts to wash his arm in a distal to proximal manner which means from the hand to the
axilla. Now,I have the patient to raise his arm over his head and lightly support it. Now, I can
start cleaning the patient's axilla. After that we should dry it. Also, use deodorant if needed.
Wets, soaps, rinses and dries the hand and nails.
Using long firm strokes now I’m gonna start to wash my patients arms and then into the hand
and nails then dry it.
Does the same to the other arm. Steps 14.A-14.C
Then, I should repeat the exact same process to my patient's other arm.
Washes the chest and abdomen:
Spreads the towel across the patient’s chest while lowering the blanket to the umbilical
area
Now, I'm going to proceed to bathe my patient's chest. What I’m gonna do is to spread the towel
across the patient's chest while lowering the blanket to the umbilical area.
Lift the bath towel off the chest, and bathe the chest and abdomen with your mitted hand
using long, firm strokes. Give special attention to the skin under the breasts and any
other skinfolds, particularly if the client is overweight. Rinse and dry well

umbilicus surrounding the skin. Then, dry the abdomen thoroughly.
Female Patients:
If the patient is female I should pay special attention to the skin beneath the breast
Washes the legs and feet:
Exposes the patient’s leg farthest from you by folding the bath blanket toward the other
leg, being
Now that I’m done washing my patients chest and abdomen I will be proceeding now in washing
the legs and feet. In order for me to wash my patients legs I need to first expose the patient's leg
farthest from me by folding the bath blanket toward the other leg.
Wets, soaps, rinses, and dries the patient’s farther leg (from distal to proximal).
Using long firm strokes I’m now going to wash my patient's leg from distal to proximal then dries
it.
Washes and dries the patient's foot thoroughly. Applies lotion to the foot.
Now, start cleaning for the patient's feet, toes and toenails. Then, apply lotion to the foot.
Reverse the coverings and repeat for the other leg
After doing that, we need to do the exact same steps in washing our clients' legs and feet.
Discards washcloth and maintains patient's privacy.
Now that I'm done washing my patient's anterior side of the body I will now proceed to his
posterior side. But first, I need to discard the washcloth and maintain the client’s privacy.
Refills the basin with clean water.
Also, I need to refill the basin with clean water.
Changes clean pair of gloves and applies perineal care as necessary
And change the clean of pair gloves if necessary.

Washes the back:
Assist the client into a prone or side-lying position facing away from you. Place the bath
towel lengthwise alongside the back and buttocks while keeping the client covered with
the bath blanket as much as possible.
Now that I’m done changing my gloves and refilling the basin with clean water I'm now going to
assist my client into a side-lying position facing away from me so that I can clean his back. Sir, I
need you to face your right side. I’m going to place the bath towel alongside the back of the
buttocks and also keep the client covered with a bath blanket as much as possible.
Wash and dry the client's back, moving from the shoulders to the buttocks, and upper
thighs, paying attention to the gluteal folds.
Now, I'm going to start washing my patients back moving from the shoulders to the buttocks and
upper thighs. Also, we need to pay attention to the gluteal folds. After doing that we need to dry
our patients back.
If patient's skin is intact, remove and discard gloves if used
As I am assessing my patient I can see that his skin is intact so now, I will be removing my
gloves.
Perform a back massage now or after completion of bath. (If patient presets)
