I. INTRODUCTION:
News is commonly referred as an acronym of North, East, West N and South. Probably
because writers gather news materials from any of these geographical directions. In the 15th-
century, news was the abbreviation of the term "new things."
Ceciliano Jose Cruz, in his book, Campus Journalism, defines news as "a timely and factual
narration of past, present and future event." This could be presented through oral, written or
audio-visual medium. It is oral if the medium used is the radio, written if it is through newspaper,
magazine and other reading materials and audio-visual if it is through television, movie and
internet.
Rachel E. Khan, in her book Campus Journalism, after putting more essential elements of news
together defines it as "an accurate and timely account of an idea, issue or event that affects a
significant number of people."
Any idea, issue or event could only be newsworthy if it affects a significant number of readers,
listeners or viewers. A news could only become one if it catches the interest of the reader or
listener. As Charles Anderson Dana, editor of the New York Sun said, "If a dog bites a man that
is not news; but if a man bites a dog, then that is news." From this, we can conclude that the
bottom line for news writing is interest.
II. DISCUSSION:
Qualities of News
1. Accuracy. It refers to the correctness of statements, names, figures and other information.
2. Objective. The news does not take side and devoid of any impartiality.
3. Factual. It consists of actual persons and events with nothing invented.
4. Balance. It gives proper emphasis on each fact in relation to other facts. It also gives attention
to both sides in a controversial issue.
5. Concise. It is short enough to contain the most important facts 6. Timely. It refers to the
freshness or immediacy of the event.
Elements of News
What is news to one person may not be news to others. A news story can only be considered as
news if it awakens the interest of the readers or listeners. Below are the elements of news that
could give interest to the readers or listeners:
1. Prominence. It deals with persons, places, things and situations, which are familiar to or of
importance to the reader.
2. Proximity. It refers to the nearness of the events to the readers.
3. Immediacy. It refers to the timeliness of the event.
4. Oddity. Any unusual or deviation from the normal course of events like a pregnant man,
bearded woman and other newsworthy data or event can awaken the intent of the reader.
5. Human interest. It deals with events which are appealing to the emotion.
6. Conflict. It deals with any disagreement between man and hisfellowman, man and nature or
man and himself.
7. Names. It involves newsworthy people like those who pass board examinations and those who
won during election.
8. Numbers and statistics. Results of sweepstakes, raffle draws, vital statistics of celebrities and
peso-dollar equivalence make good news.
9. Romance and Adventure. Love and adventure stories,
especially among celebrities and prominent people, can arouse the reader's interest.
10. Significance. It refers not only to the importance of the event but also on how it will affect
the readers.
11. Change and development. Any progress like putting up of new schools, buildings, roads,
bridges and the like could be news items.
12. Animals. Stories about animals, especially those unusual ones, are interesting to the readers.
13. Calamity. Newspaper pages devote stories and photos describing casualties caused by
earthquakes, typhoons and other natural disasters.
Two General Kinds of News
1. Straight news. The data are presented in direct fashion using the summary lead. It is also
called hard news.
2 News feature. The data are presented indirectly through the use of novelty lead. It is also called
soft news.
Tips in News Writing
1. Write the news as soon as you have gathered the facts.
2. List down facts according to their descending importance.
3 Highlight the most important data as your lead.
4. Be accurate in presenting facts.
5. Write the full name of the person and organization when first mentioned. Thereafter, use only
the surname or any appropriate title of the person and acronym for the organization.
6. Attribute authority or source of news to strengthen the credibility of the news story and to
protect the newspaper from libel suit.
7. Identify names mentioned. If the person has several identifications, use the one relevant to the
facts of the story.
8. Avoid editorializing. Do not inject your opinion to the news
9. Be objective. Present facts without bias.
10. Make short paragraphs. Write one-idea, mostly one-sentence paragraph.
11. Use simple words.
12. Use short sentences but vary their length.
13. Do not involve yourself in the news by using first person.
14. Prefer the active to the passive voice.
15. Present both side of the persons involved in the news.
16. Place direct and indirect quotation separately in paragraphs.
17. Number from 1 to 9 should be written in word and 10 and above should be in numerical
figure.
18. Do not start the sentence with numerical figure. Have it in word.
Basic Structure of News
Straight news follows the traditional structure of news writing. It is written in inverted pyramid
form. The most important facts a placed at the beginning. The other details are given in the
succeeding paragraphs.
Primary lead. It is usually a
short paragraph which answers at least four of the five Ws and one H at its most effective angle.
Secondary lead. It complements the main lead by answering those of the five Ws and one H,
which are left unanswered.
Other important details. They are other less important data that give flesh to the story.
Advantages of the Inverted Pyramid Structure
1. It facilitates reading. By reading the lead, one can already get the news he wants to know.
2. It facilitates newspaper's makeup. In case of lack of space, the layout editor can strike out or
delete the least important paragraphs at the bottom, because the most important facts are on top.
3. It facilitates headline writing. Copy editor can already prepare the headline of the story from
the lead.
The Lead
The lead is the story's opening sentence or two. In straight news, it tells the most important facts
of the story. In feature article or news feature, it could be a word, a phrase, a sentence or a
paragraph that attracts and sustains the reader's interest.
"Leads are like runways, W. H. Mencken says. "Before a plane can take off, it needs momentum
to heave upward and stay afloat it is designed to entice the reader to read the whole story
Classification of Lead
1. Summary lead. It answers the five W's and one H (What, Who, Where, When, Why and
How). The story is presented using the inverted pyramid form where the most important data are
in the first and second paragraph. This is used in the straight news.
2. Novelty lead. It attracts the reader's attention, arouses his curiosity and sustains his interest. It
is used in writing a news feature or a feature article.
Kinds of Summary Lead
1. What lead. It is used if the most important angle of the news is the event.
Example: Landslides and floods brought by heavy monsoon rains in Southern Luzon have killed
at least five people, as soldiers on rubber boats rushed food and relief supplies to nearly 200,000
affected residents, officials said yesterday.
2. Who lead. This kind of summary lead is used if the person or organization involved is more
significant than the event.
Example: Inmates of the Davao del Norte provincial jail staged a noise barrage early yesterday,
calling for the ouster of two jail guards they accused of committing abuses, prison officials said.
3. Where lead. This is used if the location where the event takes place is more significant than
the other aspects of the news.
Example: Tagum City hosted the annual National Schools Press Conference on February 22-26,
2010 attended by elementary and secondary school campus journalists and school paper advisers
of the 17 regions of the Philippines.
4.When lead. This lead is seldom used. This is only used if the time element is more important
than the other angles of the story.
Example: February 14 is the deadline for the submission of the nomination forms of the 2011
Metrobank Foundation Search for Outstanding Teachers.
5. Why lead. This is used if the cause of the event is the most effective angle of the story.
Example: To bring the services of the government to the doorsteps of its constituents,
Sangguniang Panlunsod of General Santos City yesterday launched the "City Hall sa Barangay."
6. How lead. This is used if the process or the manner on how the event happens is more
important than the other angles of the news.
Example: By installing more closed-circuit cameras in Manila malls, sending out guards with
dogs and setting up checkpoints, police acted on the warning of the senior official of a possible
terrorists major attack in the capital following a ferry bombing in Zamboanga City that killed 30
people yesterday.
Angling in News Writing
Angling is the process of placing the most important part of the data at the beginning of the lead
to make it more interesting to the reader. To decide what kind of summary lead to be used in
writing a straight news, the writer should evaluate and weigh the gravity of the data.
Consider the following data for angling:
What: hanging to death
Who: an old man
Where: inside his sister's house in Quezon City.
When: yesterday
Why: unable to find work and could not go home to his family in Sultan Kudarat
How: by hanging himself using an iron cord
Angling Using the Above Given Data
1. Angling using the What lead
Hanging himself, an old man was found dead yesterday inside his sister's house in Quezon
City.
2. Angling the Who Lead
An old man was found dead after hanging himself yesterday inside his sister's house in
Quezon City.
3. Angling using the Where Lead
Inside his sister's house in Pasay City, an old man was found hanging himself to death
yesterday.
4. Angling using the When Lead
Yesterday, an old man was found hanging himself to death inside his sister's house in
Quezon City.
5. Angling using the Why Lead
Unable to find work and could not go home to his family in Sultan Kudarat, an old man
hung himself to death yesterday inside his sister's house in Quezon City.
6. Angling Using the How Lead
Using an iron cord, an old man hung himself to death inside his sister's house in Quezon
City yesterday after he failed to find work and could not go home to his family in Sultan
Kudarat.
At first glance, you can see that all the angles used on the above leads are all right, because they
have answered the questions in news writing, but if you try to examine them closely, you will
find out that not all of them are effective in enticing the reader's interest. The most effective
angle on the above data is using the Why Lead, because it stirs the emotion of the reader. It is
that dramatic quality of the angle that compels the reader to read the whole story.
Kinds of Novelty Lead
1. Narrative lead. It draws the reader into the article by allowing him to relate himself with the
character of the story.
Example: In the old days, before the coming of the earth satellite, my college professor told me,
weather forecasting was done by intrepid pilots, who flew their one-engine small planes Into the
eyes of the approaching storm to measure wind direction and velocity. Once inside the eye of the
typhoon, however, the pilot experienced an eerie calm while the winds swirled outside.
2. Descriptive lead. It illustrates a mental picture of the subject to the reader. This is effective in
writing a personality sketch or personality feature.
Example: Garbed in maong pants and black t-shirt with the word "Metrian" printed vertically on
its left side, alumni of Irinco L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas trooped to
their alma mater for their first grand alumni homecoming.
3. Quotation lead. Any statement uttered by known speaker or celebrity in the community could
be a good introductory paragraph.
Example:"You stole the presidency, not only once but twice."
Shouted Susan Roces, widow of Fernando Poe Jr, during a gathering of the opposition,
denouncing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's alleged vote-rigging during the 2004 election.
4. Question lead. A thought-provoking question to capture the interest of the reader and lead
them to find the answer provided by the succeeding details of the article.
Example: How would you know that your money is a fake?
Central Bank of the Philippines cautioned the public yesterday of the proliferation of fake peso
bills and gave tips on how to identify them.
5. Teaser. This is a device to deceive the reader in a jesting manner to arouse his curiosity and
gently lead him into the story. It is generally short, crisp and witty. Riddles are often used and
they do not give the readers any clue on the nature of the story. They are mostly suggestive and
humorous.
Example: What comes first, the hen or the egg? Well, egg could not be made possible without
the hen. But where does the hen come from?
6. Punch lead. It is short, striking one-sentence lead.
Example: Hungry farmers are selling not only their plows and carabaos, but also their children.
7. Astonisher. It uses an exclamatory sentence.
Example: NSPC 2006 Champion!
Bold red letters printed on a three-meter long streamer was hung on the gate of Irineo L.
Santiago National School of Metro Dadiangas when the 2006 issue of their schoo paper, Ang
Metrian, won as overall Best School Paper (Bracket A-Filipino/Secondary) during the National
Schools Press Conference in Kalibo, Aklan on February 19-23, 2006.
8. One word lead. It uses a very significant word to capture or arouse the interest of the reader.
Example: BANG!
Sprinters from the different divisions of Region XII zoomed like bullets to the finishing line
during the 100-meter dash of the Cotabato Regional Athletic Association (CRAA) Meet, held at
Antonio C. Acharon Sports and Development Center, Calumpang, General Santos City on April
1-5, 2005.
9. Parody lead. It consists of a parody of well-known quotation, song, poem, book or movie film
title.
Example: "You only live once, but if you live it right, once is enough."
This familiar adage proved true to Charlito Colendrez, a priest who died while rescuing his
parishioners at the height of flooding in Infanta town in Quezon last year, for he was
posthumously awarded for his godly bravery.
10. Background lead. It describes an event in which the background overshadows the
individuals who participate in it; often use for stories about carnivals, festivals, dances and
others.
Example: It was like the school was put in a time machine and was led back to the past, when
teachers and students who participated in the culmination program of the Buwan ng Wika,
gathered in front of the four-storey building garbed in old Filipiniana costumes.
11. Freak lead. This kind of unique lead use typographical effects to enhance its appeal.
Example: FOR SALE: An eight-month old baby girl for only P5,000.
The police arrested yesterday a 25-year old woman for selling a baby entrusted to her by a
neighbor. 12. Contrast lead. It is used to point up opposites and extremes.
Example:
Four years ago, she fought for the installation of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as president of the
Philippines through EDSA II Revolution. Today, former President Corazon C Aquino is calling
for GMA's resignation.
13. Staccato lead. This usually consists of a series of words or phrases, punctuated by periods,
commas or dashes.
Example: Neglected. Denuded. Abused. Abandoned. This is the real picture of our forest today.
Reasons for Using Novelty Lead
1. To enhance the readability of the news story 2. To arouse the reader's interest 3. To add vigor
and color to writing
4. To challenge the ability of the writer to be creative in writing
Tips on How to Write an Effective Lead
1. Use a simple sentence.
2. If it is a one-sentence paragraph lead, the average length is 25. 35 words. 3. Do not overload
the beginning paragraph with the answers of
five Ws and one H. Remember that the second paragraph is a secondary lead, too.
4. Do not use an important or unusual word twice in the same
sentence.
5. Avoid repetition of clauses, phrases and other similar grammatical construction at the
beginning of each paragraph. 6. Avoid, when possible, the use of articles such as a, an and the as
the beginning word of the lead.
Rules in Paragraph Construction in News Writing
1. A paragraph of the news should not exceed 75 words. 2. Important fact should be placed at the
beginning of the
paragraph. 3. Avoid repetition of clauses, phrases and othe
Writing Speech News
A news writer can never write a speech news without the speech data of the speaker.
Hence, it is must that he obtains a copy of the actual speech or he has taped or jotted down
the most important part of the speech as his data in writing the news story. He must also see
to it that he quotes the speaker word-for-word correctly or paraphrase the statements
without deviating from what the speaker has said.
Tips of Writing Speech News
1. From the copy of the speech that you have obtained or tape recorded, or its excerpts
that you have written down, get the most striking part and make it as your quotation
lead.
2. On the second paragraph, answer the Who, What, Where, and When.
3. Place direct quotations and indirect quotations or paraphrases alternately to the
succeeding paragraphs.
Example:
Strive for academic excellence – Abedin
“When should strive for academic excellence.” (The most striking part of the speech)
This was the challenge posed by Ellana A. Abedin, principal of Ireneo L. Santiago
National High School of Metro Dadiangas, General Santos City, to the curriculum heads,
department heads, master teachers and teachers with special assignment in the meeting
at the school audio-visual room, September 16, 2004. (Answers the Who, What, Where
and When)
Abedin observed that the academic performance of the school did not improve since
1999. (Indirect Quotation)
“Our academic performance shows that since 1999 up to the present, we just have
been contented of 47 percent performance rating.” Abedin said. (Direct Quotation)
Abadin noted that such rating constitutes a very low performance considering that it
has not even raised the excellence of the school when it comes to academic contests in
the division. (Indirect Quotation)
“One thing I cannot understand is why a very big school like ours performed far below
when pitted against even smaller schools in our division level,” she said. (Direct
Quotation)
The principal challenged the teachers to work doubly for the promotion of academic
excellence. (Indirect Quotation)
“Let us give the best that we can give to our school. Teachers should teach well and
should double their efforts in the promotion of academic excellence.” Abedin stressed.

Writing Survey News
Writing survey news usually deals with some issues wherein the writer is tasked to
account the side of the respondents. He may do it using questionnaires or direct
interview. The responses that he has to gathered from this will be used in writing the
news. Just like in speech news, the writer should be careful in quoting the respondents. If
he quotes directly. It should be the exact word giving by the respondent. If he
paraphrases the statement of the respondent, he thought or the idea should still be intact
in the indirect quotation. He should not fabricate the responses just to add color to the
news.
Tips on Writing Survey
1. Have the summary or result of the survey as you lead.
2. On the second paragraph, answer the What, Who, Where, and When.
3. Place direct quotations and indirect quotations or paraphrases alternately in the
succeeding paragraphs.
4. Balance your news by quoting and paraphrasing the responses of the opposing
respondents.
Example:

The idea was affirmed by Ms. Jennifer Alejandro, school paper adviser of Spectrum,
official pupil publication of General Santos City SPED Integrated School, who wished to
have Noynoy as President of the Philippines for this is a big test for him. (Indirect
Quotation)
"He promised no corruption. So we'll see.” Ms. Alejandro said. (Direct Quotation)
On the other hand, two out of ten school paper advisers chose Senator Manny Villar to
be the next President of the country.
Mrs. Marivi L. Castro, school paper adviser of the Phoenix of General Santos City
SPED Integrated School, trusted Senator Villar because of what he had already done
through his projects as a Senator. (Indirect Quotation)
"He changed the lives of many Filipinos, especially of his housing projects and by
helping Overseas Filipino Workers," Mrs. Castro said. (Direct Quotation)
Meanwhile, Mrs. Dora Allen, school paper adviser of Adventure of Hope Christian
School, is still undecided considering the long list of candidates. (Indirect Quotation)
“This is a big decision, that's why I am confused of whom to vote. I should still look at
