Grading Period: Third Week 4: January 24-28, 2021

I. INTRODUCTION

True friends are a prayerful people. Praying specifically for our friends shows a greater care for
them. Prayer relieves the pressure we may put on ourselves to solve their problems or change their
lives. Making requests to God on our friend’s behalf cultivates a humility and dependence on the Lord
for strength and wisdom. This week’s lesson, Jesus and His disciples will teach us

A. Sunday Reading
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Gospel (Luke 1:1-4,Luke 4:14-21)

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been
fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were
eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully
investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you,
most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been
taught.

14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the
whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into
the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah
was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[a]

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of
everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this
scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Reflection:

Jesus stood up to read from the prophet Isaiah. It was a passage about the coming
Messiah. Here he is announcing himself as the Messiah as he applies the words to himself “the
spirit of the Lord has been given to me”. What follows is what we might call a “mission
statement” of his kingdom - bringing good news to the poor, liberty to captives, sight to the
blind etc.

Jesus is the
servant king. We are
called to be the same. In
our giving and receiving
as one Body, we enable
each other to experience
enrichment (overcoming
poverty), vision
(banishing our
blindness), and freedom
(removing oppression).

B. Jesus and His Disciple Teach us Pakikipagkaibigan
Love in God’s Kingdom goes beyond anything earth has to offer. It is not the love between
two people who are mutually attracted to one another because of natural inclinations. It is
closer to the love that a father has for his children, or children for their father. But the love of
God is perfect and issues forth from his presence apart from any feeling elicited by actions or
attributes in the other. This lesson can be clearly appreciated f we read the following scripture
about “Pakikipagkaibigan”:

John 15:12-17
12 My command is this: Love each other
as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has
no one than this: to lay down one’s life
for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if
you do what I command. 15 I no longer
call you servants, because a servant does
not know his master’s business. Instead,
I have called you friends, for everything
that I learned from my Father I have
made known to you. 16 You did not
choose me, but I chose you and
appointed you so that you might go and
bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so
that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each
other.

In the stories we read in the Gospels we see Jesus interacting with all manner of people
in all manner of situations, loving them, healing them, encouraging them. He embraces all the
messiness of our lives and loves us, just as he loved those people he met in the Gospels. I need
only to abide with Jesus to see what his love means.
“I have called you friends”. We too are called the friends of Jesus. We are highly
favoured; We are unique and very special. Jesus wants us to know what is most important to
Him, what is closest to his Heart. We take time to hear Jesus address us as friends.
Jesus reminds us that it is He who has chosen us.
Points to ponder:
 If you truly believe that Jesus regard you as His friend, does this have any effect on you
life?
 How can you respond to this offer of Jesus’ friendship?

C. The Call of the First Disciple

Have you ever experienced a ‘call’ in your life? By revisiting that experience you can ask
for a strengthening of your belief that Jesus continues to be with you in answering His
invitation, His call. Let’s read the gospel of Matthew and let’s find out how the disciples
responded to Jesus’ call.

The Call of the First Disciple

Matthew 4:18-22
As Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw
two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and
Andrew his brother, casting a net into the
sea--for they were fishermen. And he said to
them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for
people." Immediately they left their nets and
followed him. As he went from there, he saw
two other brothers, James son of Zebedee
and his brother John, in the boat with their
father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he
called them. Immediately they left the boat
and their father, and followed him.

The Gospel reading is Matthew’s q=call+of+the+first+disciples
account of the calling of the first four
disciples. “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of people,” he says and they drop
everything and go after him. They leave behind all their security and means of livelihood and
even their family. They follow Jesus in complete trust, unaware of where he is going or what
will happen to them. Following Jesus is a liberating experience.

Yet the story is more symbolic than actual because we know that later they would
return to their boats and their fishing and their family. What is most important is not just the
external acts but the inner attitude. We follow Jesus in all the ordinary things of our day, the
simple acts of caring for others, working hard in our jobs etc. trusting that his hand is guiding
us.

How will you respond to the Call of Jesus in your own little way?

D. Aristotle’s Three Types of Friendship

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher and scientist born in the Macedonian city of Stagira in
384 B.C.As Aristotle has said -“Wishing to be friends is quick work, but friendship is a
slow-ripening fruit”.

According to Aristotle, he classifies friendship into three different types:

1. Friendships of utility are those where people are on friendly terms mainly due to the benefits
each brings to the table. Business partners, colleagues, and schoolmates are examples.
2. Friendships of pleasure are those where people find each other because of the enjoyment it
brings. People hanging out due to fitting hobbies, common interest, and fishing buddies are
examples.
3. Friendships of the good, are most important as among the three types of friendship. These are
friendships based upon respect, appreciation for each other’s qualities, and a strong will to aid
and assist the other person because one recognizes their greatness.

The first two types of friendship are easily broken. These friendships are driven by one’s utility and
pleasure. Particular when benefits is achieved or a change of common interest, these friendships will
most probably fade off. However friendship based on goodness are usually long lasting.

Friendship of the good are hard to find and develop. If you happen to have more than a handful of
friends based on goodness, you are indeed blessed. As my mother always say, “a friend will tell you
what you want to hear, but a good friend will always tell you what you need to hear”.

What is your own definition of true friendship?

Generalization:
When you were in Grade 7 you are being taught that Jesus is pure Truth. What He wills
is the perfection of love. Therefore, His statement that you are only His friend if you do what He
commands you to do teaches that friendship is based on the truth. It’s based on love, goodness,
kindness, selfless sacrifice, and self-giving. And it is all of these truths that Jesus commands us
to do. Therefore, Jesus is essentially telling us that His will alone provide the pathway to the
friendship we desire to have with Him.

In regard to your friendship with others, each true friendship can only be based on that
which God wills for friends. And, in that sense, you can “command” the will of God for your
friendships. This means you are only willing to establish a friendship upon the truth. It means
you are only willing to share a relationship based upon selfless, sacrificial, self-giving mercy,
compassion, honesty and love.

Before you work on your weekly task, I invite you to say this prayer.

Thank You, Lord, for the blessing of friendship and for the circle of love that surrounds all those
who trust in Your name. Thank You, for the gift of fellowship and for the bonding of all those
who have trusted in the Lord Jesus as their Savior.

Thank You for the blessings we enjoy and for the love and grace that flows like a river between
us, when our hearts have been made clean before the Lord and we look to Jesus, the author

and finisher of our faith. Help us to laugh with those that laugh, to weep with those that mourn,
to celebrate with those who are joyful and to comfort those that need us to share in their pain.

Build us up in a bond of love and friendship. Protect and provide for those friends of ours that
are needy. Nourish and enrich all our lives with the Word of truth and the Gospel of grace and
may we grow ever closer to each other and to You. In Jesus' name we pray,

Amen.
