Travel Around the World Lesson Plan

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Time Span: 4 Weeks
Objective: Students will be able to identify different cultures from different countries around the
world
Lesson Hook:
Read the book “A Ticket Around the World” by Natalia Diaz and Melissa Owens
Activities:
- Students will begin by creating their own passports to use over the next few weeks as we
travel the world and learn about new countries.
- For each country, students will listen to stories, color a flag from that country, and find
out about what celebrations happen in that country, what traditions happen, and what
kinds of food they traditionally eat.
- Week 1: China
- Week 2: India
- Week 3: Japan
- Week 4: Australia
Closing:
At the end of the 4 weeks, we will host a “Culture Fair” where we will bring in food from all the
countries that we learned about and have a potluck. Students will also be allowed to bring in an
item of food that relates to their culture or country of origin.

Assessment: Students will draw a picture of themselves in one of the countries they "visited"
and label the picture with at least one fact they learned about the country's culture or traditions.
This assessment would demonstrate their ability to recall and apply the information they learned
during the unit, while also allowing for their creativity and artistic expression. Additionally, this
assessment could be used to gauge their understanding of and appreciation for diverse cultures,
as well as their ability to communicate that understanding through visual and written expression.
