Tutorial Exercise: Identifying Specialty Areas in Psychology

To provide you with an opportunity to understand how various perspectives influence psychologists in
specialty areas, read the following descriptions and try to identify which type of psychologists and/or
major psychological perspective (e.g. psychodynamic, behavioural, sociocultural, humanistic, cognitive,
biological, evolutionary) each of them is employing in his or her scientific research or practice .

1. Dr. Hung is a neuropsychologist who conducts research on patients who have brain injuries due to
chemical exposure. He uses several mental tasks that measure a person’s memory and attention span
while he or she is undergoing a brain scan. Through this research, Dr. Hung is able to determine that
exposure to certain chemicals destroys certain brain regions responsible for memory and attention.
Which perspective do you think Dr. Hung employs?

2. Dr. So is a personality psychologist who studies hidden motives for aggressive personality traits. She
administers tests, like the Word Association Test, to adolescents in an effort to predict who will act out
in aggressive ways. She finds that most aggressive adolescents have hidden rage. Which perspective do
you think Dr. So employs?

3. Dr. Chen is a/an _______________________ psychologist who works with clients who have phobia of
deep water (e.g. unable to learn how to swim). She found that clients with phobia tend to have more
catastrophic thoughts when touching water than clients without anxiety. If the clients with anxiety
participate in a treatment that aims at challenging their anxious thoughts, however, they can learn to
stay in water with fewer catastrophic thoughts and less anxiety. Which perspective do you think Dr.
Chen employs?

4. Dr. Ho is a social psychologist who explores how boys and girls who grow up in different countries behave
in social situations. Her research has shown that gender differences exist in aggressive social behaviors
among children raised in Japan, but that no gender differences are apparent when observing the same
behaviors in children from other Asian countries. Which perspective(s) do you think Dr. Ho employs?

5. Dr. Li is a/an _____________________ psychologist who works with children from the lower
socioeconomic status (SES). She has noticed that many of the children at her school have very low self-
esteem. Based upon this observation, she advises the teachers and staff to listen carefully to what the
children say and each of their unique needs and to provide encouragement to help the children develop
their own strengths and realize their fullest potential. Which perspective do you think Dr. Li employs?

6. Dr. Fong is a / an ________________________ psychologist who studies ways to enhance worker

productivity. He observes that if supervisors provide workers with frequent rewards, such as verbal
praises, productivity increases and workers earn higher wages. Which perspective do you think Dr. Fong
employs?
